There have been good reviews of the Christus Imperat, Medieval Sword, Leuterit, Sicklestad, Homildon Hill, etc... But all of them will have the problem of the Windlass blade having little to no distal taper (maybe around 10-20% at the most), and hence having poorer handling than Hanwei equivalents. However, the XIV, because of the extreme profile taper required for its type, is so much more fluid in hand than a Windlass has a right to be. And I also got mine at $90 during DotD. I really wish I held on to it. The Christus Imperat is a beautiful sword with mostly good reports and I was attracted to it. But I think that I’ll stick with my Pilsen as it has a shorter PoB and is lighter than the Christus Imperat. It has a better distal taper,. Mine has a 7.0-3.8 mm taper and weighs in at 2.45#. See KoA for their stats. The Christus Imperat has a thinner longer blade with much less distal taper leading me to believe more flex in addition to being heavier with a longer PoB. I suspect it won't handle as well. I would still like the Christus Imperat but for the cost I would now choose something else since I have the Pilsen. The Pilsen is not for anyone with large hands. Mine are size 8 and that is about maximum. Those are pretty good stats on the pilsen!

As you can see, I have several Windlass blades in my collection. I like most of them. Like we said many times, its hit or a miss with them. Sometime quality control is not there. If I have to chose only one from this list i will say The Viking King Sword. I love everything on this sword, minus maybe this leather fourniture on the grip. The size of the guard and pommel are amazing as well as the blade. Its a very light sword. The scabbard look stunning. I can comment on any of my windlass blades if you need help. See list below

Cheepers that's some list! Now there is a Windlass fan. But wait, no XIV? Perhaps the best of the lot. Hehe

I don't see the XIV in their newest catalog. Am I missing it somewhere? Maybe hiding behind some of the gaudy looking fantasy stuff.

I felled a tree with the windlass ranger sword. The wide Italian short sword is a great cutter as well. I really like the ulfberet and runic long seax as well. I keep my eyes open for a fantasy Viking line William has. I've wanted it since about 2008, but they don't show up often! Yeah - I snatched up one than one over the years....lol

I like Windlass, they are the easy for me to get through customs because I can order unsharpened. I have no favourites, but some I definitely like better than others. I suppose this largely depends on the end purpose and how I am feeling at the time. M1860 Officer Model: not really into sabres due to close quarters. It came with a ridiculously small gripe. After modifying and sharpening I found it a very good cutter, handles reasonably well, and holds its edge. I do tape over the edge before returning it to the steel scabbard. German Bastard Sword: I think discontinued. Mine weighs 4.2 lbs, more than advertised and many people complain about the weight theirs which I think would be lighter. I find the weight a virtue. While not docile it has cut everything put in front of it, what’s more this is the one I use for PT. I have a more favourable opinion of the following: Agincourt: Handles like a dream, one handed or two. Type XIV: Discontinued. This is one of the two swords that I’d grab with shield if SHTF in my house. Pilsen rapier: Is fast and handles well, stiff blade. I have size 8 hands and feel this is about maximum for this sword. M1840 NCO sword (Ames): This is the one with a leather sheath and available only from Atlanta Cutlery at the moment. If I had a favourite it would be this one. It’s light, fast, excellent penetration. Their other version is cheaper and should handle the same but comes with a steel scabbard, not the best for edge retention if that’s an issue. Sword canes: Have three, no favourites here either. I like them all, probably the umbrella the least as the others are easier to carry. Many seem to have favored (indeed I purchased at discount) the discontinued type XIV. Interestingly, I notice it seems once again to have been brought back and is now offered on MRL for $229. I had looked earlier today and failed to find the XIV listed with MRL’s site. It was discontinued. Perhaps they found some in a corner and these are now gone. This seemed to have happened with their Poignard. About a year after selling out and deleting it from their listing three appeared on their site and these went in about a blink of the eye.

Seems that this happens on a semi-regular basis at MRL. I'd like to go digging through their warehouse...no telling what you'd find.

Yeah, I saw it on the site and was even able to put it onto checkout (just to see if I could). I looked today and no swords. I cannot believe they will keep it discontinued (indeed, they brought it back from the dead several times...maybe an advertising tactic), as people in the know seem to sing its praises highly.

Together, we own all the Windlass swords, though I can't say I actually pulled my share of the weight. You are the Smaug of Windlass swords with that mighty hoard of yours.

I think the problem is that the people singing it's praises all have one and are not likely to buy a second.

Closest thing is probably their annual sale (I haven't heard anything, but it should be this month). They have things for sale there that they never offered in their catalogs and/or that never got past the green light for mass production stage, supposedly. I always wished I could go to their annual sale, or lived closer to Atlanta. I've only been to Atlanta once, and wanted to go. Alas, I was at the mercy of friends who actually lived there and were the transportation. They wanted to go to a stupid Harry Potter movie instead, so I had to go. I purposely slept through that accursed movie. They are also no longer my friends.

This is my all time favourite Windlass sword and one of the first swords I owned, I have on multiple occasions thought about having a custom version made but never seem to get around to it. Slayer of Kings

I’m most attached to the Classic Medieval. Mostly for sentimental reason, though it’s still a good sword by itself, if you take it a certain way. The European Sword and 1860 Naval cutlass are very good swords in any way you take ‘em.
