My swords do not smoke or drink! Neither do I. If someone smokes that is their decision and I support their right to do so without heavy taxation by Big Brother. However, that being said, I take issue with smoking in my home, auto, truck (it does not smoke either), in the shopping mall or stores (ever buy a new shirt and or expensive jacket or coat and find someone has burned a hole it? And finally, secondhand smoke without consideration of me or my family members.
Puff, Puff, Puff...puff...wheeeezzzzz

Never been a big drinker myself, just never had the stomach for it really. But i have smoked quite a bit, and its certainly not good for you. However it can be a nice alternative to taking pills or something like that when you need to calm down. Ultimately smoking will give you more stress, but the short term effects can settle you down a bit. If your like me and quick to anger (or at least i used to be) then its not a terrible idea to have the occasional smoke. Whether its tobacco or Chicago black, or even that white gir" somethings gotta give you some relaxation in this stressed out world, and as long as your not smoking lumber than you should be fine. There were times when i wanted to cut someones thumbs off i was so pissed at them... But sitting down with a little blow stick or Marlboro will shut down that barbarian side.......... Sometimes Sometimes nothing stops it.

this is just one of those topics people who do it are one way and people that don't are the other mut i do believe that if you do anything without exercising moderation it is bad for you and ypour health smoking and drinking are definetly not good but as i do/have done both and other unsmart things on occasion if you keep it in moderation you'll be totally fine...save those few rare cases of accidents general stupidity allergies and such... but when you think about it food water air heart beat walking coughing just about anything that exists in life needs to be done with moderation in mind you CAN eat yourself to death run yourself to death over hydrate yourself to death and anything else yourself to death so just don't chain smoke and become a dialy ddrinker and you r life should remain happy and fufilled and long lasting just like everyone elses...

I've heard this argument before and I hate it. The whole 'even drinking too much water will kill you' argument. It leads to the 'well I'm gonna die anyway' argument which is nihilistic and silly.
See there are things we HAVE to do to survive - breath, eath, sleep, drink, etc. Yes too much of anything is bad, but we don't really have a choice, it's do these things or die. Also, eating well, good nutrition, exercise, etc. - all have very strong POSITIVE aspects to them. Positive benefits not attainable by other means (unless people can be healthy while eating junk food and sitting on a couch 20 hours a day... that'd be nuts).
So far we've got a single positive aspect for drinking which has to do with people's hearts. And for smoking we've got 'appetite suppressant' and 'tranquilizing effects'.
No offense but there are safer means to these ends without the associated risks. Teach a person good discipline and good self-control for example, or, if you're the sort that doesn't go for things like that for whatever reason, there are safer and less addictive drugs than nicotine and acohol.
I hope I didn't offend anybody.

For myself, I had to weigh the pros and cons of smoking. Let's see cons: Copd, cancer, cost, smell, inconvienence, just off the top of my head. Okay now the pros.................? No brainer for me, but hey we all get to make our own decisions.
Drinking in moderation I don't have an opinion on since moderation was never something I was good at.

. Also high concentrations of anti-oxidants in red wine. Not that I need that as an excuse, mind you. ![:)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Drinking is a great part of our society, ....... yea right. People have the right to do what they want to do, ..... yea.
My step brother has only been drunk twice in his life as well. Big guy, big drinker "oh but only a social drinker who drinks in moderation", .......... he can handle it. On his way home the second time he got drunk he crossed the center line hitting a car containing a 27 year old man on his way home from work, killing him. The poor victim had just graduated college, had a brand new 3 day old baby daughter, and had been married just over 14 months.
Step brother? He had a broken arm, nothing else. But hey at least he had a good time, and was allowed to "do his own thing",..... Yea. Still drink? Yep!
There is no positive aspect to drinking, ........ none! Any biological benefit can be achieved in other ways, ............ ways which don't kill or cripple other people.
Smoking? Just plain stupid. Imagine a guy from another planet explaining the human smoking habit to his superiors. "They dry leaves, shred them, wrap paper around it, light it on fire, and then breath the smoke", ............... intelligent race?
I watched an uncle, life long smoker, die from lung cancer, his lungs full of mutated cancer clusters and tar. It was absolutely horrible. He deserved a better way to die, ...... but sadly he caused it with his habit.

Smoking? Just plain stupid. Imagine a guy from another planet explaining humans smoking habit to his superiors. "They dry leaves, shred them, wrap paper around it, light it on fire, and then breath the smoke............... stupid. While our modern day tobacco is certainly laced with poisons, the early history of smoking in various cultures has been proven to have certain medicinal properties. Far from stupid..... The difference is today companies want to maintain their customer base so they add addictive toxins during and after cultivating the tobacco leaves. You can blame CEO's with "bottomless pockets" for that. Take away all of the chemicals and pesticides and the pure tobacco leave is really not that bad for you at all compared to the cigarettes and cigars we smoke today....

Tobacco itself has medicinal properties yet - particularly with the leaves of it being applied to open sores or injuries it helps them heal. Smoke is smoke and tar is tar and inhaling that stuff, regardless of what it is 'laced with' is going to be a detriment to your health. Tobacco is apparently an Anthelmintic. Apparently, and if you read carefully there is non-subjective (i.e. objective) conclusions drawn between negative health effects and tobacco smoking(see citations also for verification of conclusions). Though I'm sure James has a point that it's probably worse today than it might've been in the past. Still bad though I'd say.

Why is it that people say that smoking and drinking is bad but when is comes to our master, sensi, si fo, they all do it? Is it really bad to do those things and not be good in martial arts? Can someone be really that good and do thse things? some people also say girls cant fight =/ my teacher is a woman, drinks and smokes ... yet some how can run faster and a greater distance than anyone i know, and -can- fight lol quite well xD but more to the topic. in my opinion drinking and smoking and such is fine just dont let it run your life and dont let it hurt the people around you and i guess yeah it is quite possible to do such things and be good at martial arts but i guess it depends on the person
