You know what, I'm gonna say smallsword would have a good chance of winning if it was one made to match the combat weight of whichever katana it was going against. Thrusts are quick and easy to dissuade, bit even quicker to strike and recover from.

I'm not sure if smallsword ever got over 1 1/2lbs and were more often around a pound (and often less) to a pound and a quarter, so it would be a crazy heavy smallsword vs a crazy light katana duel if both met in the middle to attain equal weight.

I meant both being of fighting weight, i.e. not a dress smallsword or an abnormally light or heavy katana.

Thas was my idea. A smallsword as a real duelling weapon, not just a dress sword. The katana not an odachi or a dotanuki.

Don't think there ever were any crazy heavy smallswords. However, one with a colichemarde (spelled it right first time!) blade, which I consider a smallsword, would be a little better, since it has a portion of the blade that is stronger, the better to parry with. Yet they weigh only a little more than a 'regular' smallsword. But it is true that the weights do vary quite a bit, though none were crazy heavy. The spadroon-type swords were heavier but the blades were supposedly flexible but they were "smallsword-like."
It isn't really possible to sharpen a smallsword with a triangular blade and even if it were (Cold Steel's colichemarde is supposedly sharp), there isn't enough weight in the blade to inflict a deep cut, except perhaps on the face. But you can carve your initials on a wall to let people know you were there.

Btw, I would absolutely give the nod to a O-katana (mountain sword) over a court/dress sword if wielded by average combatants. I might even pick an average fighter with the O-katana over an expert with the court/dress.
