It's a good spring steel like 5160 or 9260 etc. And typically used by Deepeeka but without real heat treatment afaik.

Oh okay, so I was close 😉 I heard a while back that DSA was trying to pull similar shadiness with their heat treatments, but whether or not that’s a confirmable statement, I’m not sure.

I've recently learned that it is hard to tell if a blade is heat treated well without destroying it. A hardness scratch test probably shows it. All the flex thing without extreme bending is useless.

If they did, then they didn't pull that on my Excalibur. I did a slight spring test on it, and it is definitely well heat treated. Mine is a really nice sword, fortunately. Literally my only gripe is the fuller is very very slightly lopsided, but it's only noticeable if you really look.

This is a quote from Darksword's site explaining the acquisition of the swords. "We have some news for our community, news which (up until recently), we were legally obligated to keep to ourselves… So about 5 years ago it came to our attention that a company in Indian was manufacturing DSA designs under their banner. After their initial refusal to stop, we had no other choice but to take legal action. After a long legal battle, our lawyer won the case and we had about 340 swords confiscated. While our initial plan was to destroy the goods, given Animatch’s dire situation, after considerable debate and much hissing, scratching, mauling and biting we decided to turn a negative experience into something positive. We decided to use the swords for good, not evil hahahah! We decided to use these swords as a means to fund Animatch and help them buy a new building for their continued efforts in helping abandoned dogs around the city. To do so, we have decided to grind off our logo and sell these copies for 150$ each, with scabbards and belts and donate 100% of the sales to Animatch. The quality is comparable to Windlass and other makers in India." In my mind this is perfectly believable. Seized goods in these cases are often handed over to the plaintiff for disposal. So the only question is whether the quality is worth the price. This is a link to the special sale page www.darksword-armory.com/medieval-weapons/dsa-replica-swords/and this is the link to Animatch www.darksword-armory.com/medieval-weapons/dsa-replica-swords/Not getting into a debate regarding Darksword but this gesture should be respected for what it is.

I think the *newer* Deepeekas are heat treated. I bought their Molay Templar dagger a couple of years ago, and a new, sharp file just sings off the blade. Definitely an improvement over the early years when you could scratch their steel with your fingernail. Flex is good on it also. Stuck it in a piece of 2x4 and it went at least 30 degrees both ways and came back true. Tough li'l dagger, and purty too.

Well, I've made a decision about making a decision. If they still have them in stock come July 1st, I will more than likely order one. It's still possible I'll change my mind, but at this moment I'm willing to take a chance. The fact they are relatively cheap and the money goes to a good cause makes the decision a bit easier. If I order one, I'll give a detailed review about everything I can reasonably cover. Citing tests are iffy, because it's so bloody hot I have only left my house to go to doctor's appointments in the last week.

I don't think that means anything, honestly - a one time donation drive would make DSA a donor, but typically not an official sponsor and partner like the above companies that provide the shelter with free or discounted goods or services on a regular basis.

Ok, here is how I look at it.
1. Your $150 will be going to help an animal shelter as a charitable contribution 2. They will give you a sword for your contribution instead of the usual t-shirt or bumper sticker 3. You can deduct the $150 from your taxes as a charity contribution so the sword is essentialy free of cost 4. Since the sword is free, there is no fear of either hanging it on the wall as a cool decoration or taking it outside and cutting all kinds of stuff with it without fear of damaging something valuable. 5. It could either break, or become the best sword you ever owned- either way some animals got food and shelter.
For a $150 tax deductable charitable contribution I'm just not seeing a downside to this.

The dollar value noteworthy though, no? As the shelter did announce a drive, perhaps such a generous donation may make their news in time. Or not. >$500,000
