The SFI administrator responded to a thread in the technical and help subforum. The main page there has been down for awhile. Of course the Facebook page works. He admits it is time to overhaul his forum system. A blast from the past there is what is left of the pub there. www.swordforum.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?25-The-Nelson-Arms-Family-PubI participate in the A&M section there.

Not sure I can be warm and cuddly with someone brandishing arms.

Welcome aboard, Michelle. What kind of weapons are you currently looking into? Currently looking into zombie tools( specifically the sharkalope, the D'Capitan: Sabre, The Scyllis, and the Deuce II), I'm also looking into weapons mainly used during the 19'th and early 20'th century and some renaissance swords. town guard swords, side swords, rapiers, sabers, bowie knives, machetes, bolo knives, hunters, etc. bought a Genesis Machete by WindLass Steelcrafts last night from Kult of Athena. then I have two el cheapo pocket knives not worth mentioning or using for that matter.

I only ever really see good things mentioned about Zombie Tools. We sometimes get them in the classified section for sale at discounted prices.
Absolutely love Bowie knives.

The way I see it, there is a minority of lonely creeps in all places of the web. But try not let them speak for majority. Most of us are regular people, but there might be lonely teenagers or older guys who can't fathom the idea of a female who collects swords.
But I like to think most of us just see it as a hobby we all share and enjoy discussing

As it happens, there's a Windlass Steelcrafts "Sheffield Bowie" waiting for me in the mail. Biiiiig boy. I'm picking it up tomorrow, and will post my initial impressions if anyone's interested.

Look, absolutely dude. It is a flag you fly and to what intent? Even the owner of the forum does it and while I let free spirits do what they wish on the boards, I'll rarely hesitate to point it out. If I was having a costume ball, the last thing I'd want is to have someone mingling while pointing a weapon at someone else. You are doing so with every post you make while using that avatar. Don't get me wrong, I grew up with Pat Mcgoohan and the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh. A few degrees in the line of sight makes all the difference between an implied threat and something not directed at the reader.

Fwiw,
I simply tagged the image url. I copied nothing, it is hosted by this board. If you don't want it used on this board, ask to have it removed.
While you are taking screenshots, don't forget to shoot the ones you delete and before edits.
I wish you no ill will. I had simply said I have a hard time getting warm and cuddly when someone is brandishing a weapon. To that, your boiler seems to have built up a good head of steam. The last avatar critique I made was regarding animated avatars. Ignoring someone's thoughts are as easy as not reading them.
I'd check signatures too but I turned them off. There are some good ones I am sure I am missing.
Back to your thread topic, most threads I participate in here are not in this very social atmosphere but I regard all of them gender neutral unless requested.

Was introduced to them via Skallagrim. I like knives that can be used for pretty much any function. Killing and defense, chopping up wood, underbrush and food etc.

We all blow up from time to time. I have had my share of explosions until recently. I been mellowing out a lot. Might be due to being constantly hung over.

Tinker Pierce got my attention with one of their fighting daggers the first time I laid my eyes on it. www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=TINK007&name=Tinker+Pearce+Custom+-+Fighting+Dagger

Killing and defense, chopping up wood, underbrush and food etc. Most of the blades I own fall into the utility category. Kult of Athena stocks a manufacturer named Traditional Filipino Weapons who specializes in (you guessed it) Filipino weapons. Filipino weapons are fighting blades but often started as being utility blades where they chopped down brush, carved meat and other daily tasks. Things like the Ginunting, Talibung, Dahon Palay, Pintue and Panabas all fill a utility role on top of being used as a combat blade. I own a Ginunting (not from TFW, mind you) and it chops through bamboo very efficiently. It's incredibly light weight and does not tire you out. And swinging it around makes that really satisfying "whoosh" sound. You may like some of the things they have to offer. But my favorite blade of all has to be the Nepalaese Khukuri. Khukuris can replace the hatchet, the machete, the knife, the saw, the rubber mallet and a few can even function as a pry bar. Kult of Athena only supplies the Ex-Gurka Khukuri House (EGKH) blades. These blades aren't bad at all but there's better on the market. Himalayan Imports and Tora Blades are probably the two best khukuri suppliers in today's market with an honorable mention to Khukuri House Handicraft Industry (KHHI). Both Skallagrim and I purchased from Himalayan Imports but Skallagrim bought a khukuri sword and I bought a slightly larger than standard size khukuri. I bought a Chiruwa Ang Khola and it is a chopping beast. I felled a 5" wide tree with it and with no damage to the blade. Regardless of what you do order Himalayan Imports makes the sturdiest khukuris that are nearly indestructible and Tora Blades makes the lightest and most historically accurate khukuris. If you want quality those two are the best. EGKH and KHHI are more modern and if you like variety or aesthetic appeal or you just want to save money then going with either of the last two would be your best bet.

OK, I have the Windlass Sheffield Bowie (AKA Hunter's Companion) in hand, and my quick impression is OHMAGERD! This is the best thing I've ever seen from Windlass, hands down! Great handling, rugged good looks, very close resemblance to some mid-19th Century originals, decently sharp straight out of the box - and it's cheap, too! (The sheath, while of perfectly good leather and neatly made, is a perplexing failure on a fundamental level of basic design, but will do for storage until I get around to making my own. I'd planned to do that, anyway, and can't really complain at this price.)

I cannot for the life of me recall what the name of the maker was but if I find it in my search history I will be sure to share it. Edit: Finally found out the knife maker. Scagel is the one I was talking about. I think they look very similar, especially in the handle banding. cdn1.bigcommerce.com/server3200/k2pame/products/47476/images/28772/A_Bowie_600__46798.1374801055.730.500.jpg?c=2kultofathena.com/images/RAK006_l.jpg

To clarify before hand this is my personal observations and views
I mean I can say why girls are not interested in Blades as much as Say trading card games, video games, cars and other vehicles, and even guns. The market of women mainly consists of what is "in". History is what makes sword collecting interesting. and Women today are more interested in the social aspects of history, not the things that escalated such actions or what actions made it so that those social aspects thrive in the first place and what they used to do such things or stop those things. Its the literal interest between emotions and the materialistic ways of men (in my opinion). But what about tomboys? Its all about whether or not it has any emotional value, It doesn't matter what it is, and blades for some reason do not fill that emotional value criteria for many women unless they make it themselves (but not very many women want to work around a hot and expensive forge and heavy equipment for hours on end like men tend to do), thus the reason for such a small female audience. I guess you have to be lucky enough to develop a curious, adventurous, industrious and mechanical mind to want to collect them and even make them. Its simply a matter of taste.
History is not everyone's forte especially when it points out inconvenient truths, so they don't learn it as much, but sword and knife enthusiasts don't really care and get into the details of history especially concerning conflicts and weapons used (from what I can tell). I personally am a history nerd, I like history, especially American and European history, The history of these two continents for a very long time directly affect me and what I can do today, why not study and collect samples of these events such as their weapons? Why not collect the tools that they used to cut grass and everything else during peaceful times?
I don't think these things should be hidden or shied away from especially when it can benefit me more to get weapons capable of killing and learning how to handle them safely and effectively rather than taking a more "progressive" stance of regulating it in ridiculous ways (like Canada and Parts of Europe did) and sweeping the actual problem(s) under the rug until the next time it is brought up. Hopefully we know how that always turns out.
