Apart from the fact that I wouldn't want to shake hands with Storm bringer, I am not sure if that will work, I found the snake skin not robust enough... It felt like I was sticking paper on the wood. Having said that, maybe it is tough yet thin. I will soak the off cut tomorrow and see how far I can stretch it.

And I just realised that if the sword wasn't so long, it would look like a hollywood ninjato, long handle. black straight blade, small guard and all. Phew..... That's a different between functional fantasy sword and a Hollywood BS sword

I have thought of getting some animal bone claws to make a sword stand, my GF put a stop to the idea very quickly. Now that I think of it, a cast iron model of parietal bone will make a wicked guard, but way beyond my skills and access to equipment.
