My sword arrived today, and I have to wonder what Cold Steel is thinking, selling this for just $100. All I could find by way of defects was, on the scabbard, some slight cracking of the lacquer on the hangar, with a little roughness along the edge towards the chape. On the sword itself, there is a burr on the knucklebow where it meets the quillon. I couldn't find any signs of corrosion or pitting. Fit in the scabbard is very snug, but after it's popped loose with the left thumb the draw is very smooth. The blade is stiff, as it should be, but very quick and easy to bring back on point. It's definitely no fencing foil, but still is very light handling. The grip is long, plenty of room to put your forefinger either over or behind the quillon, either barehanded or wearing a fencing glove. As expected, no edge on the blade, just a wicked sharp point. Bottom line, very happy. (paid $100 and had free shipping)

One thing I didn't expect... my Windlass Falco dagger is heavier than this sword. After I handled the two, I looked up the spec weights to confirm it. Dagger is listed at 24 ounces, the sword at 22.6.

Yeah, I think that is part of the appeal to the smallsword, as you get a 31" reach in something lighter than the Natchez bowie. In fact, as a combo, the smallsword/dagger is relatively portable and even concealable, compared to the alternatives.

Mine arrived yesterday. I can't find anything. Not. One. Thing. that could be wrong with it. Maybe it doesn't fit the specs for a smallsword, maybe it does - but I love this little thing! It is a keeper for sure!

It is a keeper for sure! Biggest secret on the web, probably because they technically don't have it in the seconds section. And the best deal. This is what I've been telling people...wish I got a commission, oh well, happy people with swords is its own reward. Lets return swords to fashionable carry item, as many states are actually open carry for firearms, maybe sword and firearm together. Beats Man Purses.

I thought I would add a couple of comments in this thread, having mentioned that I got one in another thread.
I continue to be very satisfied with the Cold Steel smallsword, even perhaps impressed. It isn't perfect but it was a bargain. And also, apparently different people have different ideas about what a smallsword should be. It may or may not meet the specifications but there are no such specifications, although you are free to issue your own specifications when you have one made. It fits the definition, however. If you don't think it does, then it's merely misnamed. About the only thing about the thing that is standard is the design or shape of the hilt. Every smallsword or photo of same had exactly the same shape hilt, though details vary enormously, mostly in the ornamentation.
First, the hilt. It appears very solid. I hope the grip doesn't unravel. But the basic design is curious to me and I'm not sure exactly how it is supposed to be held. It's nothing like my US Army NCO sword and it is nothing like a fencing sword, meaning foil or saber. At least it isn't too small.
Then there is the scabbard. I expect it will need more care to last than the sword will even though it will invariably get beat up more. I hope the metal parts don't fall off. But I will be making a cloth cover for the scabbard, as I have done for another sword I have.
The blade is what makes the sword. There was no rust or scratches anywhere on the one I received. It isn't perfectly straight, either. But what I mean is there is a slight ripple half-way down the blade, not that the blade is crooked. But it is only detectable by using a straight edge or by running your bare fingers along the blade. The German-made blades of two other swords that I have are perfect, insofar as I am able to measure them. But I still like the blade.
I really like the stiffness of the blade. I think if it were a spadroon-like blade with an edge, it would not be anywhere near as stiff. Even so, it was the spadroon-style sword that became common for military use after the period in which smallswords were most popular. As good as it is, however, it doesn't mean I'll never buy another sword.

Hi all. Does anyone know if the current Small Sword second selling for $148 on the Special Projects site is the same deal as this one, only at a higher price? I can't quite tell if this has something different wrong with it. Was the one being posted about also supposed to have removed rust?
Thanks.

I believe someone posted about it recently - not sure where it went. IIRC they are not even sure themselves why it was listed as a second
