I believe you, Venus. I only speak against the "I know exactly what to do in each situation" attitude. Edelweiss, electrons are not hypothetical !

One of my favourite training bits was one guy would have a wooden knife in his obi (we wore gi) and have our hands behind our back. Another guy would take us down by surprise from behind and we had to pull out the knife and stab him while the other guy would try take the knife from you and stab you with it. Was actually a very effective training. It's what my instincts kicked to when I was attacked at a party when hanging with my Bros in the ghetto This is getting sillier by the minute.

Not everyone who attacks you is a trained knife fighter. Ever grow up in a ghetto? Most people's first instinct is "to take you down". Call my training silly but no one here thinks your an expert either. I don't claim to be an expert. I just have experience. The way you are going around calling people down makes it look like you got a low self confidence. Like you think you got something to prove. But whatever. What I experienced is what I experienced, regardless of what you think.

Going around calling everything down doesn't make you look like an expert. It just makes you look like an angry Internet nerd

I gain nothing from fooling people online into thinking I have a bit of experience. Which is all I ever claim really

Who is trying to prove what exactly? Maybe we can set the gangsta attitude aside. Hangin' with your bros in the ghetto doesn't exactly impress me. I apologize, it wasn't you that brought the thread back up.

We can talk about historical fighting knives, can't we?

I doubt you have time. Actually, I know you don't have time to press anything if someone decided to pull a knife on you with intent to hurt you. One thing is to have someone showing the knife way before he comes to you and other thing to show it while he grabbed you by the testicles. Umm wait. Aren't you the one drawing two knives? Yes I am - did I said I am the victim or the attacker? No Now you can continue with your assumptions, or stop and get your story straight. For me knife fight = both opponents are aware of what they are facing and have tools to Go for it. what's your story regarding knife fighting?

Really? Tie up both hands in a confrontation? Knife fights are a rare enough possibility. Hand to hand combat not even that common at war these days. Suppression, or kill or be killed rarely involving blades. I carried a fixed blade as protection in and around Boston for many years during the '70s-'80s but always thought of having one hand free if I was to draw that knife. A handful of actual armed situations and threats were talked out. I had left most physical and material damage for much earlier in life. A blade of any type could be a "fighting knife" or thought as a personal, last ditch possibility but few carry knives as such. I look at any knife I own as having utility practicality, so I wouldn't be looking for a kerambit unless I wanted a new box opener. I recently sold a larger "fighter" type I had used for utility and I'll miss it somewhat but I have scarier knives left. I don't remember if it was this thread in which someone is more interested in longer blades (actually it was not this thread) and that 8" was not big enough. Having used and carried a lot of knives, 8" is about my maximum interest and a 6" fixed blade plenty long for me. I have a dagger on a short pole if I feel need bladed reach at home. I see your points on the one vs two knives idea, as it should be applied to the type of blade, I suppose, as two handed blades are their own thing, as well as rapier/dagger (clearly) . If we are talking about regular knives, that free hand is quite valuable. No it's not from my point of view. If we go deeper, I would rather slash and stab also as defensive tech instead grab or punch with my offhand . But again, each individual has his own approach. I said I wouldn't like to be in that situation but ideally I would go for 2 knives instead 1 and empty hand. 2 knives make you unpredictable, one not quite. Is how I see it in real world not in dojo environment.

In hypothetical situations I always use my hypothetical weapon with my hypothetical skills, it always works extremely well ! Never have so many hypothetical electrons been wasted in discussions such as this. Hypothetically, in a hypothetical discussion, those hypothetical electrons may only have been wasted hypothetically. And that's my hypothesis...hypothetically speaking, of course.

Hypothetically, I think an ideal fighting knife would be a blade long enough to deliver serious slashes and chops with decent heft. I would say perhaps 9-13 inch blade, 3/16 to 5/16 stock. Razor sharp with either a flat grind or nice convex grind. As sharp as possible. With either a double-edged blade or at least sharpened some part of the way on the back edge. I think you want to essentially have something that will do damage any direction it was swung. I think my CRKT FE9 is pretty much ideal as a fighting knife. If it was a bit larger and heavier it would be even better. In addition to some of the aspects you just pointed out, really, the largest blade length possible which would technically be defined as a knife. Really, a knife that exhibits short sword attributes, that you can kill with a jab, rather than have to telegraph because you had to throw your body into the punch (James Keatings Riddle of Steel and Bagwell Bowies).

Is there a reason for strongly curved daggers like the Arabs have?

Speaking of which, I have been eyeballing that Ka-bar Swabbie (pretty nasty cutter at 24oz of 1095 Cro Van...and the price dropped lately). "Hassan Chop"...and drink. Taylor, speaking to Dr. Zaeus after seeing the lobotomy performed on Landon, his crewmate: "You cut out his brain you bloody baboons".

But why didn't Europeans make daggers with the same curve? Colder climate, thicker clothing, more slashing protection??? ... drink. The roman Pugio was not far away from arab daggers, but straight. Ok, a karambit is similar.
