I agree with those that either can't carry a firearm and those that would carry a knife for it's other practical applications. I carry a lockback for my EDC. There isn't a day that I don't use it for something or other: opening boxes or even using as a screwdriver. I've never used it in self defense. Back to the topic, I prefer a knife that will work well for defense in that odd possibility but can be used for whatever tasks that will occur daily. Single edge, sharpened clip point. Now, that sharpened clip point wouldn't be on the back, would it? If so, it may be considered a double edge, but I don't know, just throwing it out there.

You really don't know how right you are with this. Our toughest street gangs have a survival chance against our GM tech opponents like a snowball in hell!
A sharpened clip point back would a knive make a weapon here.
The most annoying thing here is that folders with one hand opening are generally not allowed to carry. I understand it for some pointy switchblades, but a solid drop point working folder...

The whole thing sounded like bull to me. It read like a short story..a not well thought out one. I call horse $#!t. The whole thing (knife carving and revolver pulling) would have never happened if the (so called) police officer drew down on the punk. I am with the cop on this one.

Personally, if I believe armed fighting is about to be genuinely unavoidable, my first choice will be a handgun over a knife.
That said, my biggest criticism of the Pointman story is the decision to leave the kids alone with the intent to engage in a confrontation (under circumstances likely to escalate dangerously). In this scenario, my primary weapon of choice would be a telephone.
If, for some reason, I thought immediate engagement was absolutely necessary, I still would've secured my children and called for assistance/backup first. Just mtc.

Your REALLY gonna have to elaborate on this one. Go into obvious break in situation with kids in the car and walk up to intruder (weapons STILL covered and not in hand) and kick him in the ass? You realize the dude pulled a revolver, right? What is wrong with at least calling your fellow officers (after CAREFULLY seeing the intruder...with your gun in hand...then retreating) while having your firearm ready with the kids?

Apparently there is quite a bit of ambiguity in what Germany considers a weapon. This cat seems to be doing his best to get himself killed proving that: Joerg SpraveAh, Joerg Sprave one of my favourite characters. And I’ve been down the slingshot road. But my first love is a blowpipe. I’ve carried them as hiking sticks and made them disguised as a cane. I have one, for around the property use only, with a bayonet. An idea copied from the Dayaks. They work. In Canada, we are not allowed to defend ourselves past "neutralizing the threat" just enough to be able to run away. If you hit him with a frozen fish? It's a weapon now. But I carry I knife regardless. I ain't getting stabbed just so I can follow the law *edit*Oops this was meant to be response to Pgandy. Oh well In regards to your post: why not just hockey tape up the handle of a rapier blade and keep it in a painted pvc pipe meant to look like a walking stick?

What you are suggesting is to make a sword cane for which PVC would be a poor choice. The first blowpipe that I made was with PVC and it had entirely too much flex. Bamboo or metal tubing are better choices. But I have several sword canes including a Burger that was made for me. A blowpipe has more range and can be used as a bo. They work fine and could post some kills but that would upset the mods. Even the blowgun forum that I am a member has a special section for kills so as not to upset people. The truth of the matter is that the threats that existed earlier are no longer and I find a wooden cane by Cane Masters sufficient, but do carry a can of Inferno in addition to the cane.

The sword wouldn't rely on the tubing for anything structural. It's just a way to hide a sword. The handle would be made of tape, secured by a nut (assuming the blade has a threaded tang). And a blow gun in an active fight? You would have to unscrew it, load it with Ammo, only to have, at best, a tiny dart go in them. Or do they make darts bigger? I know nothing of blow guns I personally wouldn't carry a sword. Just recommende it as an easy way to carry a sword. I just take a kukri in my bag and a karambit in my pocket. Doesn't need to be these weapons either. They are just what I got. I also carry a kobuton made of steel

The answer of the Policeman is there, in the last lines: He was gambling based on what he saw. It is the normal reaction someone has when he sees a guy trying to break into the house, especially if he is a male in his prime. You have a ko-kat under the bed. Would you call the police first or try to get the guy before the "surprise factor" is no more a surprise? It's human nature. The police training is against human nature. I bet that if he was seeing the same guy trying to break into neighbor's house he would have called the police. Confident guys take chances when ego is involved, and it will work until not. And will be approved by other confident guys that think they can handle things.

In that light, you didn't even have to answer. Why in blue hell would anyone have to do anything on a comment board? Standing by your statement (without explanation)...or saying that the moon is made out of cheese is also within the powers of ALL involved. Demands? Sheesh...I was just curious (still am, as what that so called officer did was DANGEROUS and reckless...my opinion, which I elaborated on). Relax, dude (also not a demand ).

Umm, then the dude shouldn't be a police officer. An average citizen (actually EVERYONE) would have probably pulled the gun and held the punk at gunpoint until the authorities arrived. The better idea would have been to back off and notify backup (with weapon drawn) outside and when the bad guy left the house draw down on him (after kids have been secured). Going up to a robber in your home and kicking him in the butt while not even pulling you weapon first is bat poop crazy and beyond rational justification. Please remember, the bad guy ACTUALLY PULLED A REVOLVER...something most officers never see in their ENTIRE CAREER. Folks, this was a SERIOUS EVENT and no joke.

Before going further it would be a good idea to define “self defence”. Defence against what? I believe it was bluetrain that wanted something against animals in the field. In my case my primary concern were the feral dogs. I must admit that some dogs I encountered had only two feet. The government finally stepped in and eliminated them. People were attacked and I know of one fatality there in all likelihood more. Hazel carries scars today from dogs. The blowpipe worked fine. If my adversary was a man, and it has happened but not while carrying a blowpipe I could use the pipe as a bo. I carried it preloaded, as I did with slingshots. The darts were of steel and held in place with a magnet. Just pop off the rubber muzzle cover, which can be done while raising the tube and remove the tape over the breech which is quick release and it’s ready to fire. In fact I can do that in far less time than it took to write about it. As far as darts go that is a book size subject far too great for this limited space. For the dogs I used 3” nails as a base. Points can be made of a variety of materials from nails hammered to shape to X-Acto blades, #11 is a favourite. Below is a video that I made making darts. It is continued on Part 6. If you want the whole thing go to Part 1. That was in response to a challenge to make a blowpipe using all natural materials with tools restricted to a saw, knife, string, and a fire maker other than matches or lighter. It had to be minimum of 4’ and shoot a dart through a drink can at a minimum of 8 paces and show the liquid coming out of both holes. Darts are considered the traditional ammo but other ammo can be used. Indians up in Guatemala use seeds on birds. I’ve killed with .44 cal. ball bearings. May favourite material is aluminium pipe although steel conduit makes a better bo but it is subject to rust. Copper can be used but more expensive.

Any kind of sword hidden in a shaft would be a pretty bad defence against an animal. For me anyway. I would prefer a sabre or something. Or even a long sword. When it come to a hidden shaft weapon, I think I would just sneak a bayonet with a maple dowel for a shaft and make a spear. Or even just sneak a spearhead. I don't know anything about blow guns so I have nothing to contribute there. But ever hear of modified slingshots? Use a high tension band, a whisker biscuit, and you can shoot arrows. I reckon that would be better than nothing. Can shoot steel bearings too if you modify it in a way that can be folded down when not in use.

Confidence? A confident man would kick a home invader in the ass huh? Some of the fools I see making comments on the internet make me physically ill. To be perfectly honest, any piece of garbage that breaks into my house is going to die. Any fool who thinks about age or honorable morals is just that..a fool. take a long hard look at reality. Or maybe you don't know what that is. Gunpoint? If you have someone at gunpoint, shoot them. Or die, like a fool. I thought maybe there might be some smart folks here. I find most of the comments about that horseshit story pathetic and stupid. Have a nice day in your dreamworld of honor and justice, and enjoy your moral high ground It won't stand the test of time, or reality.

I would kill someone if I knew they were there to harm me. But a common theif I would just beat up with a bat and tie the dude up till cops arrived. Keep in mind that differing opinions don't make a person stupid. Not everyone is so blood thirsty. There is no such thing as a "smart opinion" and a "stupid opinion". All a man has is choices. Some people would rather give a guy a second chance at life. Just cause a person makes a bad choice in their life doesn't mean they gotta die instantly. That being said. I wouldn't be so easy on a guy with a gun. But that's just me

Yes, a confident man will kick a guy in the ass to surprise him. Confident doesn't mean being stupid or smart. It means you are so full of you that you can disregard anything else. Something similar with your attitude. Having guns is not an excuse for not brushing your language or not knowing the meaning of the words.

The post by the person saying he was a police officer is quite suspect. Show me where they train law enforcement to walk into an ongoing crime scene (without drawing weapon) and go up to the criminal and kick him in the ass? And what was the result...a FIREARM WAS DRAWN by the criminal (thank God the officer...or kids...were not shot) and the punk was cut up. The post is probably FAKE. If real, the officer should be dressed down by his superiors and forced to go through additional BASIC training. Again, this was a SERIOUS incident, and I don't want people reading this thread to get silly ideas and end up dead. Call for backup/police...and have weapon IN HAND (distance is your friend). If real (and again, I really don't think it was), this man was SO LUCKY that punk wasn't a wee bit more competent at drawing/holding onto that revolver.

Though I may be blunt and arrogant to some, those people haven't walked in my shoes, and have no concept of my reality. You at least understand the truth of of a situation. I wish I could share my own reality with others, but there is no way of doing that on a forum. It's frustrating. Most people here have good hearts, and though they are naive about some things, they don't deserve my contempt or anger. I apologise to anyone ive offended, I was angry and frustrated. I've seen the worst of human beings too often. It's why I left law enforcement. A word to the wise: Do not ever hesitate in a bad situation. Morals and honor have no place in reality, not when you deal with bad men.. Bad men have no morals, they have no honor. When you limit yourself like that, you weaken yourself, and empower them. That is the truth. Don't be fools, if you value your lives, or your family's lives, or some poor innocent person's life..it's not like the movies.
