The post by the person saying he was a police officer is quite suspect. Show me where they train law enforcement to walk into an ongoing crime scene (without drawing weapon) and go up to the criminal and kick him in the ass? And what was the result...a FIREARM WAS DRAWN by the criminal (thank God the officer...or kids...were not shot) and the punk was cut up. The post is probably FAKE. If real, the officer should be dressed down by his superiors and forced to go through additional BASIC training. Again, this was a SERIOUS incident, and I don't want people reading this thread to get silly ideas and end up dead. Call for backup/police...and have weapon IN HAND (distance is your friend). If real (and again, I really don't think it was), this man was SO LUCKY that punk wasn't a wee bit more competent at drawing/holding onto that revolver. Agreed. Though I may be blunt and arrogant to some, those people haven't walked in my shoes, and have no concept of my reality. You at least understand the truth of of a situation. I wish I could share my own reality with others, but there is no way of doing that on a forum. It's frustrating. Most people here have good hearts, and though they are naive about some things, they don't deserve my contempt or anger. I apologise to anyone ive offended, I was angry and frustrated. I've seen the worst of human beings too often. It's why I left law enforcement. A word to the wise: Do not ever hesitate in a bad situation. Morals and honor have no place in reality, not when you deal with bad men.. Bad men have no morals, they have no honor. When you limit yourself like that, you weaken yourself, and empower them. That is the truth. Don't be fools, if you value your lives, or your family's lives, or some poor innocent person's life..it's not like the movies. If the (lets assume) officer had simply followed standard police protocol, the punk would not have been facing SEVERAL serious charges (only breaking and entering), as well as being cut up, because he would have pooped his trousers after either being drawn down on at the refrigerator or when he left the home. The simple fact of how the so-called officer describes the event going down proves my point beyond any reasonable doubt, as a firearm WAS PULLED. Good God, there could have been multiple fatalities. Now, if the punk pulls the revolver with the officer having his Glock trained on him...well...this is where I believe what your talking about goes into play...shoot until the threat is stopped (but really, you empty your bladder and freeze when a gun is pointed at you...if your lucky, of course). Going up to a home intruder with a HOLSTERED/UNDRAWN firearm and kicking them in the butt is something out of The Three Stooges, and people agreeing with it were just joking around (as there were simply no explanations to give). This thread is now officially killed...in fact...it never really existed because the guy was clearly a fake. Moral of story (Captain Obvious): Don't leave your weapon (gun or blade) on the nightstand and walk up to a home intruder in the middle of the night and kick them in the ass. Hahaha...sheesh.

Back to the fighting knife, I realized I don't care what geometry has as long as I have one in each hand. Not that I would ever want to be in that situation, but I would take 2 knives vs 1 any day.

Had a lot of guns pointed at you, have you?
I might suggest more pretty pictures of knives without the supposition, fantasy and psuedo cyber toughness. The first page of the thread was doing ok but the person who started the thread had also started a number of somewhat similar threads.

Really? Tie up both hands in a confrontation? Knife fights are a rare enough possibility. Hand to hand combat not even that common at war these days. Suppression, or kill or be killed rarely involving blades. I carried a fixed blade as protection in and around Boston for many years during the '70s-'80s but always thought of having one hand free if I was to draw that knife. A handful of actual armed situations and threats were talked out. I had left most physical and material damage for much earlier in life. A blade of any type could be a "fighting knife" or thought as a personal, last ditch possibility but few carry knives as such. I look at any knife I own as having utility practicality, so I wouldn't be looking for a kerambit unless I wanted a new box opener. I recently sold a larger "fighter" type I had used for utility and I'll miss it somewhat but I have scarier knives left. I don't remember if it was this thread in which someone is more interested in longer blades (actually it was not this thread) and that 8" was not big enough. Having used and carried a lot of knives, 8" is about my maximum interest and a 6" fixed blade plenty long for me. I have a dagger on a short pole if I feel need bladed reach at home.

It's not something that I would ever think I want to be involved or something for which I am ready to go for once I left my house, mind you. Kama, sai, tonfa are coming in 2 (some in 3 like sai). When the weapon is an extension of your hand, I have a problem to see how same weapon ties you up. 2 blades is my option. You don't like it, it's not my problem. I don't carry a knife for fighting purpose. Even a 2" blade can kill if you know where to apply it, so really, a knife dedicated for fighting is a marketing gimmick in my opinion.

You know. Literally any knife beats nothing when it comes to fighting. Even a butter knife could be a make shift Kobuton. I used to have a Fairbairn skyes fighting knife and it suited it's purpose just fine. Didn't keep it though for reasons I would rather not talk about. But Holy semprini it was a good knife.
My Karambit is nice. Compact and can do a lot of damage. My kukri is even better. But in the end, I would take a stick over nothing if being attacked with weapons or numbers

Only toy guns when I was a kid...but in any event, since I'm drawing down on the punk...BANG BANG BANG...punk dead...next question? Ok, maybe the thing to do when you hear a break in is leave your guns and blades in the bedroom and walk up to the criminal and kick him in the butt, I mean, you wouldn't want to be viewed as a pseudo tough guy living in a fantasy, would you? But you were probably right on one thing...more pretty knife talk...a fantasy we can all agree on.

I suppose a good question would be "what would be WORSE than nothing"...a very good question actually. A sock (could be used to bind/strangle), a pillow (evasion/distraction, soften blow), etc...

I see your points on the one vs two knives idea, as it should be applied to the type of blade, I suppose, as two handed blades are their own thing, as well as rapier/dagger (clearly) . If we are talking about regular knives, that free hand is quite valuable.

I heard of soldiers being instructed to piss in sand and put it in a sock for a make shift weapon. But I dunno how I feel about that one, when I'm sure there is other things they could use instead
As for the two knives vs one. I can see the value in having two knives as one knife can be used for a deadly "jabbing" hand, one the opponent is unlikely to disregard. Distract them with that hand and use the other for surprise thrusts to the unprotected areas. Or one knife can even be used for control, such as a forward facing Karambit.
I try not have a preference in any weapon. I don't like being dependent on only one system or item. Makes it too easy to be vulnerable

I got over the feel of penetration many decades ago and to this day something I regret having done so. I have remembered it especially with every puncture and laceration I have received myself and talked down knives and guns (not the toy type). That hardly makes me an expert in steering opinion of a hypothetical but experience can be a real teacher. Threads such ss this seem to bring out enthusiasm of considering "what if" but to me they equate to little gain in real life. IIRC, it is Red Michael that spends a lot of time "practicing" and creating videos. Maybe there is something to gain in seeing some destruction of inanimate objects but those aren't real time encounters.

Maybe there is something to gain in seeing some destruction of inanimate objects but those aren't real time encounters. No doubt that a real knife fight is a nightmare that should be avoided AT ALL COSTS (you really cannot emphasize that enough). Sounds like you were the victim of a horrible event. In knife fights, even the winner (if you can call him that) ends up in the hospital. Face to face, at reaching distance, the variables are really unacceptable (and you would be having to do it for a loved one, or your in a corner). Me, I would run the hell away, taking an occasional swipe at the hand reaching at me, so slash is more important than stab...as nobody wants to get cut, and the hand and person attached to the hand will pull back and stop. Firearms (distance) are superior, but remember, shooting someone will change your life in more ways than you can possibly imagine. This was why I became (lets say...animated) with the so-called cop story, earlier.

I ain't describing the details and such though cause I ain't proud of it. I was young, stupid and I was influenced by a bad crowd I'll only say it involved a lot of grappling and a surprise attack on me. I've also wrestled a knife out of someone's hand. I'm lucky that they weren't very strong though

Actually, I know you don't have time to press anything if someone decided to pull a knife on you with intent to hurt you. One thing is to have someone showing the knife way before he comes to you and other thing to show it while he grabbed you by the testicles.

I'll use my hypothetical back flips and gymnastics to fight my hypothetical opponent.
In the knife fights I've been in, I've relied on grappling most. It's never the "standing up as you take turns on each other" poo you see in manuals. I mean, unless you know the dude is coming at you to stab you, like if on a battle field, you never get to really "knife fight". It's more like a regular fight with a knife involved in it. Often being wrestled out of each others hands. But that's what I was trained in and it was good training for that. I used to carry a knife in a duct tape sheath in my inside breast pocket so I could get it out if tackled which is what I did.
I'm not saying that's the only situation you will ever find yourself in. But I the places i found myself in, that's how it usually went down.

One of my favourite training bits was one guy would have a wooden knife in his obi (we wore gi) and have our hands behind our back. Another guy would take us down by surprise from behind and we had to pull out the knife and stab him while the other guy would try take the knife from you and stab you with it. Was actually a very effective training. It's what my instincts kicked to when I was attacked at a party when hanging with my Bros in the ghetto
