So I have a standard M1a with wooden stock... thinking about getting a new stock/chassis for it. Strongly considering the Archangel... its affordable and improves the ergos dramatically, giving me a raising check rest to run optics, betterhand grip, forward rails to run bi-pod and a light. I've heard there are fitment issues, sometimes some dremeling is required. Anyone have any experience with this or other stocks they would suggest?

If you're going to put optics on the M1A, then it makes sense. I've heard Archangel is OK for the money, but not specifically re. the M1A stock. Personally I much prefer the M1A is its standard stock for use with the irons.

Do NOT get the Archangel stock! It is absolute garbage, and I speak from experience. Check out Troy Industries, Vltor, and Sage. They're a bit pricey (especially Sage) but they're hard to beat in terms of quality and design. And by "design" I don't mean aesthetics, I mean they actually work well for mounting optics as well as provide a solid foundation for the receiver of the weapon in addition to free floating the barrel/piston.

I had a m1a SOCOM 2 with that full vitor rail, found it to be way too busy.

Well, Vltor actually made a different chassis system just a few years ago that was nothing like the Socom II rail (which I HATE) I'll see if I can dig up some pics.

Here it is on a Scout model. As you can see, it's FAR less clumbsy than the Socom II rail system. I hate that they no longer make this.

Oh, that is *MUCH better. I agree... a shame they don't make it anymore, I'd likely be interested in that.

Yeah, it was the best inexpensive chassis available (was only like $275 for the chassis, if memory serves.)

Gasp, heresy! How dare you even consider defacing the purity of the M14 with an AR gimmick stock! I had the full optic setup/light/bipod/cupholder/etc. junk on my M1A Scout, then ended up going back to a basic wood stock with no add ons. Remember that it's a heavy beast to begin with and fully loaded it weighed 13lbs. Fulton Armory markets a Boyd laminate stock; with a dozen coats of Tung oil it just shines with holy .30 cal badness. www.fulton-armory.com/stockbrownlaminatedbirchnometalnoselectorcutstandardweight.aspx

Purely a personal opinion: the M1/M14 platforms were never designed with optics in mind. Having tried both standard and scout optics on it, iron sights just feel right.

Your right about that... optics are a pain on the platform. I have a convoluted cheek riser on my stock now to get me level with the scope mount... and I have the mount MADE by Springfield. The irons on the M1a are just about the best Iron Sights I've used on a gun, I must admit. I want to use my M1a as a DMR tho... to reach out 300-400 yards with regularity. My eyes just are not good enough to make that work with irons.

Neither were AR's or Remington 700's, but why not optimize and enhance your ability to get the most out of the weapon's capabilities?

I like the walnut stock on mine for aesthetic reasons. However, I can see the advantages of a synthetic stock, especially one that directs the recoil straight back into one's shoulder and is easier to mount optics on rails. The Blackfeather stock has received very good reviews on the Team M14 forum. My steel and wood:

Lucky. I have no practical reason to want an M1 Garand, but dammit, I want one!

Here's my M1A... wannabe! It fires 7.62 short errr by 39! Nice simplified gas piston, shoots surplus AK47 ammo with zero issues since I've done some work to the bolt face and replaced the firing pin. It's lighter too, and moderately modified :D They were good enough for the A Team in 223 and multiple Police Departments and SWAT teams.
