For anyone who isn't on the Roman Army Forum, Deepeeka have been working on a few new gladius designs with loads of input from the guys on the forum. They seem to have addressed better tangs, more historically accurate blade shapes and (are you ready for this) Distal Taper!!! They aren't finished yet but the photos they have put up look very promising indeed.

I'm surprised the brass plates at the shoulders are not inset into the wood.
Efit/add: at least the sica has it inset. Too bad for me I don't like that harsh angle style of sica.
Liking the guard and pommel on the other two but wish the grips were ovoid not cylindrical

Yeah, I'd like a squared off or oval grip as well. So, Dave, what's the skinny on historical grips shape wise?

WOW. That decorative scalloping looks amazing, I might get one just to knick the fittings!

On the sica you can see an 1/4" or so edge of wood around the outside edge of the guard, with the brass plate set inside this and flush to the top of the wood. The other two look like the brass plate is just on top of the guard and those plates are flush to the side of the guard, vs. being set inside it. To me at least anyway.

These look great. Always nice to see companies listen a bit to their customers and make new designs. Though you would think they would have heard the customers asking for oval grips. Still some great looking offerings, and maybe they will fix some of the issues we are bringing up before these hit the market?

What's the word on steel and heat treat? More historically accurate and prettier is great but unless they are producing good blades that are useable for cutting, they're just prettier props.

They are mostly meant for reenactors who don't really need a heat treated blade. But lately Deepeeka did offer both soft and hardened versions of their blades. Btw, I am really looking forward to the 4th/5th century spatha they are also developing right now.

I just hope it's real wood... Deepeeka said they were going to produce them out of cherry wood.

I like the middle one, I think it fits the circular grip better as I can imagine that the larger blade having more torque would be likely to twist in the hand.
