I have posted on a very large forum since 2006. This forum utilizes a reputation system wherein one can either add reputation to a user or subtract from it, totally arbitrarily, based on a post they make.
The higher your reputation, the more damage you can do to another users reputation.
I would not recommend this system if the goal is to be a "friendly" forum.
That is all I have to say about the subject.

Sounds like the old karma/ismite system we had. I didn't care for it.

The way the voting is going unless we get more votes, ranking will be removed. I have looked at the internals of this forum and I do not think karma can be used as this site does not offer that option. I don't see any option to add anything in place of the ranking unless it is a title derived from belonging to a group or added by a mod.

At currently 57% in favor of no ranking it feels to me a pretty slim margin for make a sweeping change.

When the poll closes, if more votes are to remove ranking, it will be removed. More votes to keep it, it will remain.
If a tie, no changes will be made.
The forum settings keep the ranking system as an option if it is wanted in the future.
One thing which is an absolute is no matter what you do on the forum, there will always be people who complain. Sort of a no win situation for the people trying to make changes to make it what people want. ;-)

I say unless we get something else to help visually sort the newbies from the oldtimers/trolls (post count only here, no offense intended) But IMO dumping it for a karma system or something would be a better choice. Keep it

That is the pickle - there will not be a karma system like we had on the old forum. I have looked at the forum settings and there is not a karma option.
If the rank system gets voted out by majority, it will show avatar, post count and any group a member might belong to.

That should sort out the newbies, oldtimers, and trolls.

rank = caste/class system? The intentions are good but... I feel this may discourage newer members and forumites from sticking around, and could cause others to fear even posting in a good discussion especially if they are afraid to speak among the elites, seniors, etc.
If you changed the Titles to be "Achievements" it may be a bit more benign possibly. Things anyone could reasonably attain For example, own 5 swords of different styles/periods = "blademaster/swordmaster" Post in each subforum x 10 = "silver tongue" Post a video on cutting = "---slayer" *if they have multiple titles - just stack em under their name?
^pulling crap out of my $emprini; it's messy It would be nice to have a feedback system for transactions though.

I still want people who go to the trouble of doing sword review(s) to get rewarded in some way.

When I read that, all I could think of was "SLAYER" from Halo 2 when you open a local multiplayer game. Now we just need "Running Riot" and "Betrayal, Betrayed." Then the never ending "Took the Lead, Lost the Lead, Tied the Leader, Took the lead, Tied the leader, Took the Lead, Lost the Lead, Took the Lead, Tied the leader.....)

I seem to remember a join date under the avatar in the old days. At any rate there is a date registered in the members profile, doesn't go back to the very beginning but 2010. Tho even longevity on forum doesn't necessarily mean wisdom, just speaking for myself. lol I think a little research into a persons posts will get a good feel for a person. That's what I have always done, I hardly notice the titles, post count, karma ect.. and never gave them much credence anyhow. If anything all the shiny stuff made me a little leery of them. It's a whole distrust of authority figures thing for me.

I hadn't posted anything yet about this issue, but don't think this will affect me positively or negatively in any way - so, whatever happens, happens. I'm fine with it either way. One thing that Ghost mentioned caught my attention - needing some kind of feedback for transactions, either good or bad... except we already have something like that in place on the Member's Feedback Page. I know some people get caught up with titles/karma/whatever, but I think that just by reading people's comments, you can tell whether or not they're trolls or what have you. Read enough into what they say and you can definitely weed out "bad" comments from "good" ones. When it comes to altruism, though, I think it should be it's own reward, especially if it benefits the community at large. Sure, I like getting rewarded for doing certain things, but a lot of what I do on this and other similar forums are mainly done out of the enjoyment/camaraderie I get from fellow members. I seriously doubt my tiny online business will ever get as large as KOA, SOM, or any other business, so the reward from that (if you can call it that) is negligible. So, ranking system - keep it or leave it... no real opinion here.

No ranking by post count. Remember Slayer of Darkness, kid would be God under a post count ranking system.
As for reviews, if you've benefited from one (or more) then doing one shouldn't be considered a burden. Takes time and effort but someone else did it with out payment and the rest of the forum reaped the benefit. It's not altruism its giving back to those that helped you. Only done one myself but didn't worry about reward for it. I'll get around to another soon.

I voted No ranking system on post count, as a lot of what people say has no bearing on sword knowledge or helpfull comments, look at Draven not a big post count but some very useful and informative threads.
Edit I would be all for a "reviewers ranking only " if it came up.

44 votes for how many active members? Not exactly a quorum to do anything with, what?

I have no issues with the ranking system really. Keep it or not, I'm not going to get bent either way. I just personally would rather not have it because it keeps us equal. The karma system does a little better at sorting out the more helpful but even that turns into a popularity contest at a certain point. As far as separating the wheat from the chaff, the posts themselves should do that. Ideally, having a rank system with the ability for individuals to opt out should make everyone happy as far as making everyone happy is realistic. LOL No offence, Robert, but if someone is doing reviews for reward, they are doing it for the wrong reason in my opinion. I'm with Rick. I opted-out of the Karma system on the old board... just felt like gold stars for popularity, a pointless contrivance. As for the ranking system, I don't really care but gun to my head I'd say there is no need for it, or any sort of affectation that separates us.

Plus this thread as been up for four days. To me, it looks like only 44 members care if the ranking system kept or not. The rest of the members don't even care enough to vote or leave a comment.

As for the ranking system, I don't really care but gun to my head I'd say there is no need for it, or any sort of affectation that separates us. I know this thread isn't about karma but, with all due respect, I just had to call bs on this. I gave karma to those who were helpful, made good reviews, made my experience on the forum that day better in some way, and many other substantial reasons. I never gave karma to someone just for being popular and I never really saw anyone else do that either. I know you shouldn't do reviews or help people just for a reward but it's nice to be able to give a virtual pat on the back when you think someone did a good job on something they didn't have to do. People like Adrian, Chris Peroni, Dodger, and many more had a lot of karma because people appreciated what they contributed to the sbg community. I miss being able to give karma when someone goes out of their way for fellow forumites. A high post count on it's own is hardly commendable imho but the karma function will be missed. btw, if you say I said all this just because I had karma and also lost about 3000 posts off my total count during the migration, I'll just say that I knew you were going to say that -Josh
