This Forum currently has a ranking system based on post count.
We are polling members to see if we will have a ranking system by post count or no ranking system.
This poll is to keep or do away with it and nothing else.
1-vote per member. Poll will end in one week.

I think it's a good idea, just maybe not based solely on post count. I've been around (on and off, admittedly) for over 5 years now and I'm only a 2 star. I mean, I don't personally care how many stars are under my name, but some members (I think) like to have their seniority recognized. And I think a ranking system is a good way to do that. But that's just my opinion. Edit: Apparently a 3 star.

Ranking is fine....but SBG's database of sword reviews is more valuable than member chit chat. We need some way to reward for sword reviews. One decent sword review should be worth at least 100 posts. Karma points helped before. Now what? Warm fuzzies? Not enough for spending hours and hours doing a review. RinC

I have no issues with the ranking system really. Keep it or not, I'm not going to get bent either way. I just personally would rather not have it because it keeps us equal.
The karma system does a little better at sorting out the more helpful but even that turns into a popularity contest at a certain point.
As far as separating the wheat from the chaff, the posts themselves should do that.
Ideally, having a rank system with the ability for individuals to opt out should make everyone happy as far as making everyone happy is realistic. LOL
No offence, Robert, but if someone is doing reviews for reward, they are doing it for the wrong reason in my opinion.

I say keep it, but if we end up doing away with it, I don't think I'd be that fussed.

Put me down as indifferent, mostly siding with Rick.
I seem to remember the original forum had done system specifically geared toward recognizing known reviewers, something like review points that were good for SBG store credit or some such. Personally, I don't feel incentive is necessary, but then I've never done a full-blown review per the format. If i get anything new and think others might appreciate seeing it and hearing my own thoughts, I'll just write something up with a few quick photos and call it done.
The karma system of the other forum was okay, but I feel like if it were to come back, I want to see the smite button return, too. Shouldn't be any reward if there is no punishment.
Otherwise, yeah, don't care either way. I recognize some names, others I don't. That's what I go by.

Side point, but could we get rid of the default spinning sword avatar? Its a bit tacky and kinda distracting.

Agree, the karma system where peers recognised quality contributions was a better system. Otherwise it doesn't make much of a difference either way, as the current ranking system just records quantity of posts.

I kind of like the ranking system, but if it gets voted out I won't cry into my Cheerios.

Sorry guys, this is strictly to see whether we will keep the ranking system or not. Karma and other methods of recognition will have to be sorted out by the top brass at another time.

Nothing wrong with suggesting alternatives to vote on later, is there?

Nice part about the ranking system, is that it gives some recognition for participation. I used to host a chat forum in another hobby. It bothered me that 9 of 10 readers never posted. Too many eaters. Not enough producers. Post count rankings beats nothing. But karma system was better. A multitude of "Yeah, what he said." type posts are in no way as good as sword reviews that value add the SBG database. --- All volunteer? Well, I go to work...and they pay me. If they said, no pay, then no work. Sword reviews are time and work....warm fuzzies are no enough. I no longer have my youthful altruism. --- I have been going slow on a Huawei review for this reason. And have another 4 swords I could review, as my scarce time permits, after that. Call me cynical...is ok. But not everyone feels warm fuzzies is sufficient for hours of work. RinC

I am generally indifferent these days, but when I was new to the forum I would often look at people's ranking and post count to put their comments into perspective. Not to say someone who had only a handful of posts couldn't teach me something, but yes someone with over a thousand posts opinion did tend to add a bit of weight to the comment's content.
So I can see how the ranking can be good for someone who has yet to learn the different personalities we have here.

I dont really care, but we dont really need the ranking system to show how many posts someone made. You can clearly see the number of posts right there under their username. I didn't mind the karma feature. That was useful. THe smite button? That must have been before I joined- sounds like an interesting feature.

Very seldom, but was nice when somebody was being an outright jerk or posting blatantly false and/or unsafe "information" and the like. We had a few folks with negative karma...those were the days~~
Anyway, back to post-based titles: Meh.

I just voted "no". I would like to be able to see post count, but ranking by it could encourage some to make too many pointless posts. Please bring back karma.
