Heh... Yeh, I heard about them a long while back, and was intrigued, but I wanted to handle one of the weapons before I committed my money and waited 12 weeks or more for the product.I eventually got to check out some of their stuff at a get together in Stockton, at Razor's place... and I was pleasantly surprised. The D-Captain, the one I'm most interested in, was a lot more nimble and handled much better then I expected. I want one for sure now. Sadly, they have become so popular while I waited that their wait time is even longer now. :-(

I had their wolf viking sword but did not like it much and sold it. Everyone else who has bought other models seem very satisfied.

I have had a Hellion for a while now. I like it so-so. But I am not a fan of blades where the point sits well below the centerline of the grip, so take that for what it's worth.
I do like the overall execution that I ordered a Phalanx about a month ago. I see the phalanx model been removed from their website now. Hope I still get mine.

Why didn't you like it Mr. Swiger?

It was slightly heavy and the pommel design had sharp edges. For $250.00, it would have been fine but over $500.00, it was lacking. That is just my personal feelings. I just think for the money spent on that model, I could have done better.

I own a Spit, so I can offer a few comments. It's based on the zulu Iklwa spear which is light and fast. The Spit, however, is 48" long and full tang, so it's heavy compared to most things in the spear/polearm family (4 lbs, 10 ounces). Still, it's well made and the balance feels pretty good. If there was ever an apocalypse, it would be great to keep looters and meth-heads at a distance - anybody that got within three feet of you would be sliced to ribbons. It is solid and you'll never break this thing, unlike a lot of wood handled weapons. Mine has the hammered finish which looks super badass. Hope this helps.

Can you tell us where it balances? How much do you need to choke up on it to swing it? Sounds too heavy to be a one handed weapon as the Iklwa was.

My new ZT Phalanx was waiting for me when I arrived home Monday night from Pandemic 2013: Zombies in the Heartland. Woohoo!
I haven't had a chance to do anything with it yet, other than take a few swings in the kitchen. It is a beast and you can tell there is weight there. But it is much less clumsy than expected and once you get it moving, it flows very well. So far, I like it significantly better than the Hellion. And the size difference is significant between the two, which I wasn't expecting. More to come...

EDIT: Nevermind, I just reread the thread

Anyone has any input as to the cutting ability of these blades? They look like they have knife edges on them if i'm not mistaken? Also does anyone have any input on the apokatana? Thanks

What I saw of them, they do come with beveled knife like edges that are pretty raw... but once touched up a bit (for example Razor's D-Captain) they can cut VERY well indeed.

I've got the Mack Daddy-O <cringe> (I still dislike that name). The blade edge is sort of between knife and tool, IMO. It came sharp enough to cut paper...sort of. By that I mean that with the right angle, it would grab and slice with decent consistency. Sometimes it would grab and tear. Be off just a little bit, and it usually didn't do anything. Of course, that was with me holding the paper and working the blade. I chose not to sharpen it further because there is nothing about this piece that suggests subtlety or fine work; too fine an edge, and it (the edge) would likely fail during the job for which it was built (not that I see myself having an opportunity to cleave parts from their bodies in the near future).

I'm with hhmoore. Both ZT pieces I have are about as subtle as a 12 gauge up side the head. I see them not so much as a fine edged sword as I do a bar mace with a sharp edge. Zero distal taper until the last inch or so, coupled with substantial weight for their length, makes them more suited to heavy chopping and bashing.
I had a friend visit recently and handed him my Phalanyx. He said "this thing really feels heavy, but I guess it could really do some damage." Then I handed him my 28" ATrim Thorpe Falchion and said "this is what a really good sword feels like."
At that point I saw the AH HAA! light bulb come on over his head. The said "YEAH! I could really slice someone open quick with this!"
All that to say, ZT stuff has a straight secondary bevel much like ATrims. And their mass is such that you would probably want it only moderately sharp to keep from overloading the edge on hard targets. Of course, if you are only going to cut plastic jugs and bottles, get it as sharp as you want. But if you want it setup as a weapon optimized to perform as designed, stick with the degree of sharpness that comes on the edge. The ZT guys really know what works best on their designs.

I think we would all love to see you bash/club and stab/slice something with it Mike! Are you up for a video - I'll bet it will be quite the workout... Cheers!
