Hello everyone, Please advise if below scratches can be polished out? and if by polishing it will it damage the hada? Also what grit to start at? I've got 1000/1500 the highest I can get here in Australia is 2000 This is a Hanwei Kai Tanto. Thanks for your help and advice.

Trickey! It is going to be very difficult to polish out that section without the newly polished section looking very different to the rest of the blade. Normally for this type of scratch I would advise the use of a polishing cream, but that would certainly make that section look different as you will be polishing away the etch on the steel that Hanwei put on to show up the folds.
Are you set on the hanwei frosty hamon? If not then I would probably dismount the blade and re-polish it. Btw those scrathes look as if there was something in the saya, have you checked and cleaned the saya?

You can order 3000, 4000 and 5000 grit direct from Europe, it is not expensive, in fact I ordered 15 sheets and the landed price here was less than the same number from Bunnings!

OK guys I don't like the strong acid wash that Hanwei put on their swords from factory, hence why I used Mothers polish on my captain's gunto. Taking your advice William I'll try the metal cream polish first and see how that goes, if it comes out and it's not too bad maybe I can live with it(the scratches).
If that doesn't clean it up good enough (too a bearable state) I'll follow your advice Aussie-rabbit and wet polish it out, and mate your a legend thanks for the link.
Now would wet sanding that one area destroy the hada?? :?:

It kinda will.. The hada will still be there of course, but not as visible as Hanwei probably did a light etch on the blade to reveal the folds. You could always re-etch the tanto with vinegar and then use a non-abrasive polish to get the vinegar residue off. I use MAAS, its excellent! Read up on this link, although its about stone polishing its great to see the process on nihonto. www.ksky.ne.jp/~sumie99/togi,process.html
