hey guys, I know you all know that MANY blades sold on the market have different decorative designs to it - the 7 stars big dippper, the dragon, flowers, tai chi logo, bagwa diagram and so on.. you name it. Sometimes I am really disappointed at these and really HOPE people will come up with a clean pure blade with no silly crap on it. The dragonwell stuff, I expect is from china and I am VERY piss when I bought that bagwa big broadsword home and find out that the bagwa was drawn WRONG on the blade! Oh dang! If it is on the scabbard, I can scrape it all out and clean it up to be a wood, plain scabbard.. But now the thing is engraved onto the blade!!! Sigh!! Pissed! How can you Chinese people just put the bagwa's wrong! Even with little knowledge, just research a bagwa diagram online and do it right man! It's not only mine, it was done wrong in BULK! Even my student's blade is the same! sigh.. I am speechless. Now the hanwei tai chi sword also piss me off for the tai chi logo as well. It's drawn wrong and it's REVERSED! what that means is you are either anti-nature or you are EVIL. www.chiinnature.com/TT_taichilogo2.htmlPlease read what the tai chi logo really means and if you want, you can dig into the 13 lessons I wrote which explain the evolution of these things step by step. Really, why hanwei can produce a TAI CHI theme sword and not spend some time to make it right?! SIGH! I am so speechless! Even they are Chinese, producing Chinese swords with CHINESE WISDOM DESIGN, it's totally turn me off when they get the wrong diagram or logo down. It's like giving you a bowl and a steak inside with soup poured over it. What the heck is this? You expect me to eat it!? Come one! Thanks for listening.. i am ranting again.. sigh.. speechless! I wonder how many people realize these flaws and actually know what is wrong with these details there? Even the 7 stars are sometimes done wrong too. DANG! I am so pissed!

No one will know...or care. Things are what you want them to be.
Any image made by man is up to men to give meanings to, and each person can decide for themselves what anything means if they want to.
A word misspelled is simply a different way of spelling. a symbol flipped is simply a new way to look at it. A drawing reversed is simply a personal choice.
No one will know, and no one will care.
I knew a guy who had a Tattoo and liked it a lot....it was a Japanese word that he said was for "dragon". Only years and years later did he learn from someone who was Japanese that the word actually mean "fish"
But really, who cares?

Yea, if you are not respecting the art and culture, surely you won't need to care because everything is meaningless to you anyway since you are like not even knowing Chinese and trying to understand Chinese by the "picture" way.
But now it's like saying Luck and "FUUCK", God = Dog, hey man, that DOES matter because it's a disgrace to the culture if you do something like that. Try and send a business letter with these kinds of silly mistake, let's see if your boss will let you go. Just by writing the DATE wrong on your assignment in school can get you a bad mark already. If really nobody cares, why do you learn to write? Why do you learn grammar? Why do you learn vocab? Why do we need language?
Putting a WRONG Tai Chi logo is not the worse thing, but if that is promoted to the world and people do think that is a RIGHT tai chi logo, including those who want to learn the real ancient stuff about tai chi, now this company already mislead people into a wrong thing already. Hey, maybe you don't care, but many do because they want to learn the CHINESE's ANCIENT SCIENCE instead of just a picture that looks cool. You know how many people try to put on a Japanese character or Chinese character filled T-shirt without knowing what it said on the text and got tons of jokes going on the street? Like some Japanese or Chinese words saying "I am a dumbass" or something like that and some westerners thought it is cool looking and wear it in China or Japan when they go to meet a friend. "I am a dumbass" is good enough for a joke, but what if the words is "YOU ARE A DUMBAASS"? Now what will your friend think when you wear that to the business dinner or social gathering? or your first date?
Hey man, it DOES matter, because we got a brain, and the brain is for you to THINK and not to just interpret everything by your own feelings. LOGIC is what we use to live a life, not instinct. If everybody do things by instinct, our world is gone and doomed a long time ago. Science saved the world because at least the western culture isn't doomed by the romans and dark age... etc,. wisdom, what is wisdom? Please. You can think what you want but if you want to say "who cares", well, I care, many people care. That's the fact because we respect the culture, and we don't want GARBAGE that disgrace our own ancestor's wisdom that was found and it is all astronomy we are talking about here, it relates to everything, and if you draw the solar system wrong, guess what, the world is going to say you are a dumbo and you can still laugh all you want too but it doesn't make science go the other way around just for your mistake, right? um....

alan - what a troll you are. you have this recent post full of your typical and annoying multi posting, where you are arguing the need to have some stupid hook on a stick look exactly like the one in a movie-- yet you can't understand or relate to someone who wishes for a known and important symbol to be represented correctly. Sighhh... I wish I hadn't been fished in again, but oh well too late I guess- it's typed out now...
---------
MakChingYuen - I agree with you- it shows a real lack of pride by the manufacturer in their own product. They should care enough to get it right just for their own sake- even if no one buying the sword(s) would know it was right or wrong.

I agree as well, it isn't hard to find the correct way to do things, or examples of things. There should be no exceptions when making something, to disrespect the culture of origion is very, very sad. However, that being sad I do think people have a choice, the people who care will usualy avoid or find an alternitive. Unfortunatly this usualy comes with a higher price tag , an thats where this kind of stuff is realy wrong.

Mak ~
I agree. In particular that bagua looks really terrible
Also, since yang by definition relates to that which is on top or rising, obviously it is usually on top when symbolized in a tai chi... Thing is, the relationship changes depending on which angle you view the sword from, so I think the tai chi isn't done nearly as poorly as the bagua in the specific cases of the two swords you mention, and though it is off, it seems less badly done as the trigrams, IMO.
Without making this a political or religious discussion (which it isn't, rather it IS a matter of being sloppy; which is to say it doesn't matter here whether or not you are Chinese or a Taoist or something else), imagine if someone turned your country's flag (e.g., the stars & stripes) or your religion's symbol (e.g., a cross) upside down... or put the stripes in the wrong field... or something of this nature out of simple ignorance or carelessness in a work of art.
Yeah, that sounds pretty ignorant if you give them the benefit of the doubt, and pretty offensive if you don't.
It isn't very hard to get it right, and not paying attention to these sorts of details frankly makes you wonder what else they got wrong when forging these swords.

Just like the bagwa broadsword I had, I didn't know the flaw is there before purchase because there are no photos online that can let me see the details first. So I bought it home and realized it and really I am like.. okay, if I paid that much for a blade, I expect at least this little thing to be right. It's at no-cost to do it right too. Just one stroke difference!
If you are learning under a serious inherited bagwa lineage, I mean like if you are really into it and your master is from a direct lineage pass down from the bagwa lineage master, and now you got this blade with the WRONG bagwa symbol, okay, that really will piss you off. It's like saying your father's lastname is Smith and someone ship you a name tag for you saying you are John "SMOOTH" instead. What the heck?
Okay, if you still think this is okay, you got no dignity in you man, need to relearn what is virtue, respect and dignity. It's what we human must have in order to be a human being.
Glad 2 of the above agreed or else I am really fired up by how sad this market is.. haha.. dang! Yeah and the price tag is high for the tai chi damascus too, about the $400 range already, and just that silly mistake?! They really don't give a SHEET to the culture whatsoever. I am really like.. okay, if hanwei can do this, and I saw they even took lancelot clip from youtube and put their own trademark over it.. man, this company is a no no for me from now on, too many disappointment, I am out! Their core is rotten!

RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Today I am saying bye bye to Hanwei already, no matter how pricy it is, I don't trust them. I saw these mistakes and I am already like..okay, I am OUT! This company leadership and QC is very questionable and I am NOT going to risk my money on it! Dang! As I saw some SBG people already commented saying those blades by the hanwei (chinese swords) aren't meant for cutting much.. so yeah, why do you sharpen it? dang! cutter envelops? cutter birthday cakes? What the.. why don't you just make some cheapo blunt blade for decoration and charge for $100 range then? Sigh!
it's so sad to see how the CHINESE in CHINA are like. They have no dignity about their own culture, no wonder Chinese ancient science is doomed. I thought it was just the Taoism that got nuked badly by the crooked politics and sects. Now I know even sword making is F'd so badly too! So sad!
If you ever see some dragonwell jokes you will laugh so hard too.. they even try to put a han dynasty war sword blade with a text engraved saying Sheung Fong Bao Jian in there 尚方寶劍 which is totally a different dynasty thing... man, where is their brain!? China is just good for making knockoff and crap?! Where is their own culture?! Gone to the Japanese or something? I am pissed today man!

Even as a person who isn't into traditionalist stuff on my swords, I wouldn't want something messed up like that, no matter how cool it looked. As Stickem said, they're mistakes, and mistakes look stupid to people in the know. The example of the Dragon/Fish tattoo mistake, to those who can't read kanji, it looks as "cool" as any other kanji tattoo... but then when you know what it actually is, it ends up being kinda dumb. The flag/symbol example is also a good one. If I were to get a Filipino flag, and the red and blue panels were reversed, it would still look like a neat flag if I didn't know which color was supposed to be on top, but once I find out that it's wrong... it ends up looking stupid.
An example for me was when I was very young, the only women I saw were Filipino women. I saw them around the house, and they're what I saw on the television. Then I learned how to operate the television and started going to school... and saw the wonder of white women. Now, I can't believe I ever thought Filipino women were attractive.
If you couldn't see that the second paragraph was a hyperbole joke on personal preference... now you know.

No one will know or care....that much is certain.
Words and symbols as such are meaningless on their own. They dont have intrinsic meanings all on their own apart from the inventiveness of some men's minds.
Thus my advice is that if the sword is well made, then respect that fact.
And when you look at this or that misspelled wording on the thing just smile.....knowing the silliness of taking such things as being important.
Always remember the stone that was rejected by the builders sometimes becomes the capstone just as the ugly duckling sometimes grows into the swan....
In the world of collecting, it's the idiosyncratic differences that occasionally occur that catch the eye, start conversations, and stand out from the rest that are sought out.
How boring is mundane uniformity.
In this situation if you cant stand looking at something, then toss it away. On the other hand, If you wisely see that such things are not worth the effort of getting upset over, then just smile at it and move on...

Although I don't know anything about Chinese religion or culture I can relate to what you are getting at. It would be like a manufacturer putting an upside down cross on a tunic or Crusader sword's pommel. Symbols have meaning, many say our world is run by images and symbols though I can't say i disagree. What you say is true though. Putting something upside down does tend to represent the dark side of things. Just like I wouldn't be happy if someone inverted a cross or pentagram I am sure you wouldn't like someone inverting a yin and yang.

Put your money where your mouth is, and have "this sword belongs to a poo-poo head that doesn't care what's on the sword, as long as it's well made" engraved along the blade of all your swords and...
Not saying you're a poo-poo head, but just trying to drive the point home that having something dumb or mistaken on your sword isn't just something to laugh of smile about.

Yeah? Words have no meaning on their own? Why are you typing in English than? Why don't you just quit the forum instead if words have no meaning on their own? you are talking in a LANGUAGE which is based on words. Where is your brain and logic? I am not saying you are dumb, but your logic is crooked because you even forgot how our symbols, images and words are created. There is no words at the beginning and so if people really DON'T CARE about a tai chi logo or something, okay, buy a PLAIN sword with no crappy engravings then. I doubt the swords fittings are even engraved on that crappy thing, it could be just a die cast crap too. Who knows. The work on that sword shows one thing - sloppy job, no respect for the culture they are trying to promote and it is a piece of sheet if the sword can rattle and wobble so easily. Why the heck are you trying to protect and defend that sword? Are you those people from hanwei or something? You wanna say that sword is GOOD!?
Come on, get a life man, you need to learn your logic first, how things happen in order.. your mind need a surgery or you need to go back to science class and learn how the world and society is formed. If one don't care about words or logo, sure, buy a plain sword then, why buy a sword with a logo on it? Duh...!? I just can't stand it, you need a different brain to think man. You can laugh at something like that and move on, sorry, I can't.
The tai chi damascus form hanwei is too flaw-filled and I can't even see why you are trying to defend that sword. People tried it already said it is light weighted, not secure, not good and only okay for forms. Now I just said the symbol is wrong and "I" cannot stand that crap. What is wrong with you today huh? You wanna debate a Taoist symbol with a Taoist master who have 15 years of experience in the field? Okay sure, you want some free lectures?
Don't try to go around and around man, you seriously need to rethink about your logic, you are asking for hammers to bang on your head only. Nobody can agree with you. Too bad. Your logic is crooked. You can buy whatever you like, but we also have things we cannot stand and cannot accept. Such as a big flaw in the design which is even the THEME of the sword. Holy crap, if a "DRAGON" sword is engraved with a snake, that is a big piece of SHEET, can you say it is good?! Okay, it's promoted as the sword of DRAGON! If I want snake sword I can buy and search for a SWORD OF SNAKE instead, don't try to convince people into your crappy logic man. You need to stop and think.
If anyone like that sword as a TAI CHI SWORD or TAI CHI THEME SWORD, you already need to know today- that symbol on the sword is wrong and it means you are anti-nature, which is EVIL in the Taoist dictionary, only occult use that symbol in the past and it means you are not flowing and harmonizing with nature too. It's not even about right or wrong, it's about you are going anti-nature, anti-nature means what, your sword is screwed. Period. You just bought a SHIIT of paper and not SHEET of paper.

yes it is...
It really is up to the owner of the sword to make that call,
We can only give our opinions and offer advice as best we can. My advice is that we all need to just keep in mind that errors happen , and yet that this is what makes life interesting.
No one will know, no one will really care.... It's not worth getting so upset over such a silly thing.
A sword is an item that the owner spends good money on, as such if the owner of something does not like the way its made, then he toss it out.
But if a sword that is made to cut is well made, but has artwork on it that is simply flipped around, or backwards its not such a big deal.
Some children are born healthy and the same, some have differences that make them stand out....but to the right parents each can be still loved.
If this sword is ugly to the owner's eyes then he has the right to toss it out. But he also has the right to overlook such little things and still enjoy the beauty of the steel , overlooking the little things that cant be changed anyway.

Btw, for all who may want to know, the tai chi symbol is not just a LOGO or symbol, it's an astronomy diagram that illustrate time and space, it explain how the earth orbit around the sun and form the four seasons. The reflected / flipped S line in the middle is the line that people found by collecting data from a measuring tool that measure the length of the shadow produced by the sun thru out one year.. and so it marked the "time" as well.
This is a piece of astronomy and science finding, it's wisdom, and if you think it is just a symbol that mean something cool, man you are really not knowing what tai chi is. If you think it's just about yin and yang, dang you really need to read my 13 lessons page I posted before. This is NOT just a symbol. It's science!
Now let's say we put the WALT and VOLT wrong. or the C and F for temperature wrong. Can you be okay and just smile to a thermometer with C and F swapped and so now 3 C = 3 F? If you are okay with that, I am speechless but I am sure nobody want to live with you because your brain is totally not functioning like a normal human being. Period.
UNDERSTAND THE SYMBOL BEFORE YOU SPEAK TO DEBATE, I AM VERY CLEAR ALREADY. PLEASE READ!!!

If you think that is the case, why do you post in this ranting thread anyway? why don't you just shut the F up and get your own sword then? I said already, this is a RANTING THREAD and why can't I speak to be upset about the Chinese culture and wisdom being disgrace and demolished by the Chinese themselves? What's wrong with you here? You got a life?
Seriously, if you don't have the knowledge to debate, you better learn something before you speak. If you like the steel you can buy a plain sword with no design. People who CHOSE to be the tai chi theme'd sword is of course going for the design and they might NOT even know it is wrong because they also lack the knowledge behind.
I just see you are a caveman with no knowledge, another very laughable guy with the brain reversed, just like the logo. I am speechless but I am over with this kind of silly crap too, I ain't upset about you, I am just upset about the culture, Chinese is doomed with crap filled the world and it's like even the Japanese know Chinese stuff more than the Chinese now, SIGH! A culture about to die out is because too many bullsempr!ni filled the world and that is how it can get ruined. If people can accept crap, sure, go back to your crap world with cheapos, but if someone is willing to spend like $400 to buy that sword, with a wrong logo? The company really need to state it clearly first or else they are really a crappy business or manufacture. And you can even say that piece of "steel" is so good.. dang, what is your brain made of?
