Does anyone have any input for a survivalist type sword to add to my doomsday prepping? I read a review about a 33" ninja style sword that seemed very durable, one of my main concerns.

Since you've asked for swords and not machetes, here are my suggestions: Hanwei tactical wakizashi Cheness Oniyuri ninjato These would be for combat, I'd use my machete to chop trees, make shelthers, etc.

any opinions on the best available choices for a sword or two to add to my survival stash? Should be able to be used by the wife also, 5'7", 155lbs. Cutters, stabbers, able to take real abuse.

Ask 10 of us, and you'll get 12+ answers. Me, I want durable and light. Then I'll worry about specialized scenarios. Consider, What environment do you need this in? How long will this last? How much training do you have in long blade use? How about your Wife? Things I will use, I'd NEVER trust my wife to hold, let alone use. So keep it simple.
How's that for a start?

I wouldn't even go for a sword, personally. Bladed weapons dull with use, and you wouldn't have the time or resources to constantly sharpen them.
Personally, I'd use a crowbar. Not only a good weapon for bashing things, but also a good tool that's unlikely to break any time soon. Also no maintenance needed.
But if it really has to be edged, I would go with a machete.

Personally I'd not like to abuse a sword. And if saying "survival sword" do you mean to use it for fighting zombies or other unwanted pests?
Or a utility "sword", that you would use like say... a machete? If it will need to take abuse, I'd go with a machete or a kukri, cuz it's cheap, strong, and if you mess it up, it wouldn't make you upset seeing hundreds or thousands of dollars wasted... That way you can also send your wife to get firewood without worry of her rolling the edge or bending the sword. A hatchet or tomahawk would also be equally good and low cost.
But if you really mean a sword (weapon), like in a smallsword, cutlass, dao, katana, etc. better be clear what those were made for vs what you think you'll use them for. then decide what's best for your needs.
If you'd like to know what goes really good in a survival stash... go backpacking with an experienced group, and they'll help u find what tools or equipment is good for survival.

this might just be better than a sword for survival situations:
this can cut, chop, shield, slice potatoes, open a beer and more!

Cold steel gladius machete, best of both worlds, machete and short sword!

If price and availability is not an issue I would suggest Busse's Gladius over the Cold Steel one. Sadly these are discontinued and were pricey when they were being made. So the folks who have 'em aren't typically selling and when they do are selling pretty high $. The Busse Gladius is pretty darn tough, though problem is finding one for sale. Some other options AK47, Waki, Gladius, Ruck, and the Rucki from Busse and Swamp Rat Knives. I think the Rucki is the only one still in current production. Check for more info and prices at www.swampratknifeworks.com/

Thanks for all the input guys. I guess what I really want to do is add a good full tang machette for really tough hacking jobs or firewood, plus a good fighting sword to keep someone/thing off my back till I can get to a gun! I'm 6'2", bout 250lbs, retired Army so I can handle myself pretty well, just looking for an edge, no pun!!!

Zombie Tools are trying to fill that niche. I have an older model of their machete, it's exactly what I was looking for to fill a similar role.

That is AWESOME! I have never even heard of this thing. Such a horrible price point though, rather disappointing. As a matter of fact, I was so traumatized when I saw the price, that I actually had a sigh of relief upon learning that these are no longer on the market and I will probably never come across one. Easily one of my new favorite fantasy blades. I only say 'fantasy blade' because the ridiculous price of this Gladius will keep it out of my hands as long as I live in the real world. Now, if I happen to fall into the fantasy world, I'll definitely be picking one of these up! Just as soon as I come back from my joy-ride on Pegasus

I will always prefer my Ontario ASEK knife as my standby survival knife. As for a sword, anything handy will do for me as I generally say that my knife will get me to my handgun, my handgun will get me to my rifle. My rifle will get me to anything! I am getting into swords now, but I prefer stealth and being up close and personal on my dealings That being said, I keep a cheap bush blade in my kit in my truck, with a 10-inch 420 stainless steel mixed edge, clip-point blade. It can take a bit of a beating and I would use this in addition to my ASEK.
