Interesting, longsword cuts longsword, katana destroys itself trying the same thing - no surprises there, katana is only a fleshcutter, euro sword designed to withstand hard targets, armour, etc.

I don't understand why people have the need to compare different sword types or warriors, and trying to find what is "the best sword" "the best warrior" ... Usually the "winning" sword is the one which document makers want to win. As this one was made by RTL it's no wonder that german sword "won" this. And even in this video there is a conclusion in the end. The japanese sword is a masterpiece but no better than german longsword (and that works the other way too). Both cultures perfected their smithing and weapons. Japanese had their own destructive testing. Japanese sword is not perfected against hard targets as you can read from here: www.nihontocraft.com/Aratameshi_Nihonto.htmlI have visited Stefan Roth in his forge and he makes excellent european swords as well as japanese swords. Even though my preference lies in japanese swords I still like european swords too (and near-east swords, chinese swords etc.). Each culture has had their own sword types which were made and perfected specifically for their use. In my mind there is no "best" sword type.

If there is any best sword type ever, you would certainly see nothing else but only that sword type existed. The other less useful type would be phased out. It isn't the case in reality. Thus there was no best type.

Oh no not that video again, and not this debate again. I keep telling everyone, the Aztec obsidian sword the Maquahuitl is the best since it is the sharpest sword ever made. No steel can ever be sharper than obsidian. Spanish report these swords chopping the heads off horses with one strike! Though Deadlist Warror did a test and it took a few more strikes, of course they also positioned the horse head oddly in a way not normal so the swing had to be a side swing vs the overhead down swing to decapitate a real horse.

I would have to say the Katana , here is why. In the last year I have ordered 5 swords. One $26.00 Ten Ryu Katana from smoky mountain , One Hanwei tactical wakizashi. Both were pretty much flawless upon arrival. I ordered a Hanwei Tinker 9th Centuty Viking sword which had so many defects I returned it , One Hanwei Claymore which had to go back as it arrived in used condition , one Grosse Messer which arrived today with a loose hilt and crushed Chape and was also previously owned. So I think the Katana type swords are better because they arrive in good condition and the western swords do not.

Yeah, the "which is better" topic pops up from time to time, much like garden weeds. When in doubt, this essay, to me, is the definitive answer: www.thehaca.com/essays/nobest.htmTo summarize for the 'tl;dr' people: There is no best sword. Each blade served its purpose for its particular time and place. --Edward

That has nothing to do with the swords themselves; that has more to do with lemons slipping through the QC line or even how they were handled during delivery.

I'm glad that people here realise there is no best sword, for the reasons everyone has stated. Though I do blame the Japanese for perpetuating all the BS myths about their swords cutting through speeding bullet trains lengthwise and all that kind of nonsense, which many teenagers who gain their sword knowledge from manga/ninja movies believe. The 'Highkander' movie only contributed a little to katana cutting into concrete pillars!

Actually you have to blame westerners with 0 to very limited knowledge but with a great appetite for "wow" factor presented in no matter what form.

You keep going on and on about that H/T Viking all the damn time, like you think the one lemon you received is representative of the entire line. There are a plethora of pictures and reviews disproving that very notion, the H/T's are good swords. And Cold Steel, well, they're Cold Steel. What did you honestly expect?

I think a Katana is better. You know why? Cause i like them more than Longswords. That's it. Many of you like Euros more so they, to you, are better. Also comes down to whom is wielding it
