Glad we're still good Luna, on a side note I got an email from Gus asking me to thank you for posting those pictures. I think you have sparked Gus' creativity. Gus says I should piss you off more often.

Heh... Well, Luna's Courtrai used to be mine. I've not had the chance to handle the Thorpe yet, but I did recently review the ArchAngel... and have owned a couple other Falchions as well. The Courtrai is still my fav. Both the ArchAngel and the Thorpe are too thin for me... they just don't fit my perception of a Falchion as a wide, sturdy chopping blade. The Thorpe is too long for me also... I prefer a shorter blade for a Falchion. Many Falchion I have seen are between 23-28 inches. As Luna mentioned, the Courtrai, while thicker and heavier, is not heavy... I recall it being around the 2.5 lbs mark. It handles surprisingly well. To each their own... some my like a longer, thinner faster Falchion like the Thorpe... and others like Luna and myself may prefer a shorter, wider, harder hitting Falchion.

As if it makes a whit of difference to anybody, but I am insanely jealous over Zachs Courtrai. Especially after being blued, Gaaaacccckkkk, I waaaaaannntttttt one. The Thorpe is an absolute sweetheart baby, make no mistake, but I am also a Falchion Freak, and I DO like me a nasty chopping blade. I never disposed of my Windlass Medieval Falchion, Italian, or St Michael after acquiring the Thorpe , hows that for an example. Now you guys can pick on me.

is it just me or does that falchion look like it was longer the way the fuller runs off the blade?

Thanks for the review Odingaard I really enjoyed reading it and the comments that followed.
I’ve only recently become interested in Falchion’s after reading 2 novels that referenced them, then I started looking  Was looking at the Albion Vassal and now the ATrim Thorpe, and as Tom mentioned the one with the 28” Blade appeals. Is it just me or is the catalog section of the ATrim site down?
My understanding is that a Falchion has a stiffer blade as compared to a standard double edged medieval blade, and that the blade itself it also “thicker” I’m thinking along the lines of a katana type profile, is my understanding correct? ans if so ho thick is the back blunt edge of the blade?
Cheers - Paul

Falchions are generally not thicker than base thickness of most double edged swords, but they are stiffer because of blunt back. And depending on the design, they can have much distal taper or very lttle, just like any other sword.

Both of my Atrim Falchions start out at .250 in thickness at the guard.
Since this thread has been resurrected, I will add to the discussion of the merits of the Thorpe VS the Courtrai.
Long and short- Zach was right,Mike was right, and Sarge was right!!
I now own Zachs old Courtrai, and in direct comparison to the Thorpe, there is no comparison. None, other than the fact that they are both Falchions, and have a sharp edge to cut with. They are two completely different animals, suited to two completely different styles of use. I would urge any latecomers to read this entire thread and let all the insights on the two different Falchions sink in, because they are all correct. Base your choice upon their individual merits, because in this case a horse is definitely not a horse.
