All things brought to us and made better by BEER.
...or settled over a pint of BEER.
...BEER.
Swords, naturally, get their power from...okay drunken lunatics but hey, they were drinking BEER. ...or mead.

So it would seem that peace isn't in our nature, and can only be achieved through a synthetic form of man. If the power of the sword lies in a distant memory, unique for each man, then through this common memory can we preserve our natural state. So can the power of the sword bring peace?

There is no peace, only respite between battles.

I must drink beer. Beer is the mind-killer. Beer is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will drink my beer. I will permit it to pass into me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the beer has gone there will be nothing. Only a hangover will remain.
Eh, natural states are overrated anyway - there's a reason humanity has spent most of its recorded history getting as far away from nature as possible. As far as nature is concerned, we should still be living in caves and hitting each other with rocks.
What makes humanity special - what truly separates us from all other animals - is that we can redefine our nature any way we want too.

Power comes from the blade shape and weight coupled with one's body movements working in unison with it, so it becomes an extension of the body.
(on a less serious note) ...Unless it's a traditionally made Japanese katana, a nihonto - these have "katana magics" in them. "katana magics" are very rare and special and can only be created in Japan, and when you put "katana magics" into regular steel when you're forging the blade, it allows it to defy the laws of physics, so it can then cut engine blocks, concrete pillars or even whole buses lengthwise, without getting blunt, ever! It can even chop in half swords powered by Castle Dumbskull too! The only thing more powerful than "katana magics" is 'ninja magics' which allow anyone (as long as they are dressed in black and have thir face covered - very important) to catch a moving "katana magics" powered sword between their palms, and then bend or break it if they want. But first you also need to twist your fingers into weird shaped and say the special "ninja magics" words!

I believe similar, except Power comes from "Speed-Strength- and Accuracy" Most weapons OR hand to hand styles involve two of those, making them fairly decent. If ALL three are achieved it becomes the MOST powerful. With just a single one of those alone (without one or both of the others) is just no good and unreliable. I think (not sure Bruce Lee was the first to coin "Speed, Strength, and Accuracy" atleast that what an old teacher told me?). It certainly brought us better metals which increase the value of our peace. In various historical times whole Nations would have been overrun without the spirit of the Sword, but that involved unity ,etc. through other objects/Philosophies IMO...Not a simple answer. In the Army we had one cheer that went: (shouting): Q:"What Makes the Bayonet???!!!" A:"The Steel, the Steel , The Cold Hard Steel!!!" Q:"What's the Spirit of the Bayonet???!!!" A: "To KILL, to KILL, to KILL with NO MERCY!!!" Q: "What Makes the Grass Grow???!!!" A: "The Blood, The Blood, The Bright Red Blood!!!" All in all a piece of cold-hard-steel, that one uses to "kill with no mercy" , while making the grass grow.(?) From there comes battle-power. I think "double- kills" were probably pretty common in sword battles though.

Mankind is separated from other life on this planet by a sense of self-awareness, and spirituality.
As such, man is drawn to symbols... from the dawn of civilization man has used totems, and symbols as icons of power, as prayers, as a focus for spirituality, a rallying call for loyalty...as a balm for the soul.
Also setting man apart is the ability to make and use tools, and to better his situation. It is a cold hard statement of truth, that the purest, most efficient tools man makes are tools of violence and warfare and death.
But these tools of violence are powerful symbols of more than violence. They are the things which early societies used to defend their homes, and kin... the tools which allowed them to conquest other lands, as necessary to some peoples survival as defending hearth and home was to others.
And of these ancient weapons, which shaped the peoples of the earth, our ancestors, none has become a more powerful symbol of the struggle of man than the sword.
More than a symbol of death and violence , as it is to many people , the sword is a symbol of nobility, of the indomitable spirit of man , and his relentless pursuit of perfection and improvement.
The very materials a sword is made of are a quest for constant improvement... stone to bronze, bronze to iron, iron to steel...
The processes to make both the materials , and then the implements has been a quest for perfection as well... the best raw materials, forged to be the toughest, sharpest, most well balanced... no wonder man has bestowed magical qualities on so many ancient swords... at their best , swords are a symbol of the most magical qualities of mankind.
As the steel is forged to form the blade, so is the swordsman forged from a much more impure raw material...man. The sword as a weapon is fierce, and deadly, but innately flawed in unskilled hands. A longaxe, a spear, even a simple wooden staff all hold a large advantage facing a man with a sword, untrained in its use.
And so swordsmen forged their skills through through constant training, from the time they could raise the tip of a wooden sword from the ground... they tempered their skills in battle... some noble some ignoble... until the way to being a warrior of the sword became a way of such dedication, discipline, and sacrifice, the the sword became largely a weapon of nobility.
And eventually, the training in deadly perfection led to training in spiritual perfection as well... knights were men of God, bound by Chivalry, their swords defended right by might... ideally anyway... as the Samurai code of Bushido also forged the spirits of the men who wielded the steel.. and other codes , from other cultures.
The sword is a powerful enduring symbol of mankind's spirit of achievement, and quest for perfection.
To pick up the sword in this day and age is to do just that... the sword is no longer necessary to defend our homes, families , and way of life. It is no longer a weapon of warriors.
The person that takes up the sword today, and endeavors to learn its use, embarks on an inner journey. He makes war upon the imperfections in his heart... and seeks through discipline and dedication to hone his mind to be as sharp as the sword, and forge his spirit as true as the steel.....
This is not what drew me to swords.... but it is what keeps me. This makes them a lifelong passion, rather than a fleeting interest.

Well put Marc, the sword is a very powerful symbol indeed, it has become a symbol that embodies some of our highest vitues. It's a symbol of justice, truth and even divine power and authority. It's discussed in the opening of the Discovery Channel documentary Artifacts - Soul of the Samurai, pretty good documentary on Japanese swords and the history of the Samurai, it's acvailable online here: documentarystorm.com/soul-of-the-samurai/

armourofobedience...
Love the picture! You gotta give us some details about it. It looks like a zanbato from the Rurouni Kenshin series! Or maybe it's Cloud's sword from Final Fantasy?
It also resembles (a bit) a concept sword in one of my stories. The character/user is a telekenetic, and would surf the air on his surf sword. There's an idea, you should try surfing of that!

This:
Very well put. There is the power in the physical object; A Sword; but it is nothing compared to the power of the symbol. That is what has lasted through the ages.

Off topic, but I will answer your question. The sword in his sig before it was changed was a version of Cloud's Buster Sword from one of the Final Fantasy 7 spin off titles.(Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core) It is also the one in the video, for all of you that know what I am talking about. Also unless that guy was a midget it was made way too large.
Anyways, continue discussion.
