I enjoyed watching it, and I haven't read the books either. YET
Ya think Edard has a big enough blade or what? Freakin war sword of the apocalypse!
I dig it.

I saw a clip from the guy who made the weapons for the show... and when talking about that massive sword (I think he called it 'Ice') he was saying that it was intended to be largely a ceremonial weapon... not your every day sword. In that (and in its use in the first epp) it seems much like the executioners sword DSA just put out.

Ice is used quite effectively throughout the series. It's Valyrian steel, it is awesomely powerful.
Not going to say anything, but there's a reason why it is so big.

So, as a rabid fan of the books, I reaaaaaaaally liked the premier on Sunday. I thought they translated the books AMAZINGLY well, and I was not disappointed in the least! (which is rare, going book to TV or book to movie). Regarding Ice. In the books, the describe Ice as a massive greatsword, but I get the feeling it was more of a war-sword than a bearing sword. In the books, Valyrian steel is supposedly lighter than normal steel, while being exceptionally sharp. Ice later gets re-forged into two separate swords, so there's plenty of metal there. The thing (sword wise) that I'm most pleased with is that the Khal swords are being interpreted as Kopesh (what the hell is the plural of Kopesh?).
Anyways, to anybody on the fence, you MUST read the books. Plenty of Politics, Violence, and Sex. Great characters.

I'm gonna echo what everyone else has said.
I loved the premier. They followed the book almost to the letter, but had to make some age adjustments because you can't exactly show 13 year old girls engaging in coitus with barbarians.
The other age adjustments were more or less for the "I didn't read the books" audiences. Ned's wife was supposed to be 30 or so, the oldest sister was also 13 if I recall (although, the actress is 14 I think, just big for her age) and I had always pictured Jamie and Cercei to be younger then they were.
Ah well, looking forward to the rest of it almost as much as I'm looking forward to the next book. Maybe the series will light the fire under RR Martin.

The actress may be 14, but I heard her say she was 13 in the show, so her character is unchanged. Characters have often been portrayed by actors older then the characters themselves... so I've no problem with that as long as they look the part. Lucky for me, not having read the books, I have no expectations.

I just read this morning that this got picked up for a second season already because the ratings were so good. I watched the premiere and then went back to the book and read those chapters it covered, and WOW was it close! I did not expect that but it's exciting as crap if they stick to that formula throughout the rest of the series.

I plan to watch the series through to its conclusion before I read the books instead of vice versa as is usually the case.
I liked the first episode alot, and don't want to spoil the rest of the series by being forewarned of events or developements for a change. I'll use the books later to fill in the gaps, and I will have better visualization of the characters.

^ This is my plan as well. I think I'll find the show far more enjoyable without pre-conceptions or expectations... thus I will not be disappointed if they miss this or do that wrong. Then, afterwords, I can go read threw the books and enjoy those as well.

I follow everyone else's sentiment regarding the greatness of the first episode and now I really, really want someone to make replicas of the shows swords for sale. Preferable as functional as possible.

I got to see the first episode thanks to the hotel I was staying at having free HBO and I gotta say, I was pretty impressed. I'm definitely glad they're doing it on HBO and not as a movie or on some other network; otherwise, you just don't get the full feel of the story.
