I didn't find the books depressing at all. Not to say I didn't have any "aww, damn man..." moments, just that they are far from what makes up the stories. And he's more than halfway through the series! 4 out of 7 released, and the 5th one is supposed to be nearly finished. Though I don't think he'll finish the series before he dies, sadly.
(on a side note I need to hurry through my queue of books before the new Terry Goodkind book comes out. Finally another Richard book!)

Really, Goodkind? There's nothing worse, except possibly gouging your own eyes as a form of entertainment.

Wait a minute, there's a new Richard and Kahlan book coming out? No way! Is it set after the last book or is it sort of stand alone? That's very exciting!

I've read some Terry Goodkind stuff. Don't remember off hand what it was, so it can't have been too terribly bad.

To each their own. If you don't appreciate Objectivism to a degree then you will likely dislike the series. But if you feel they are the worst thing ever, you can't have had many experiences in your life (though I appreciate the hyperbole). I'm sure I could sit here and bash any number of books you enjoy, for reasons that are just as subjective as your opinion. Have a nice day. Kristie, yeah it's supposed to come out in the fall. Takes place after Confessor, but isn't a part of the Sword of Truth story arc. Hopefully it's the beginning of a new series. Zedd is in it, too. Also, two more days until the Game of Thrones premiere. I'm pretty excited.

No, I have no problem with Objectivism. What I have a problem with is boring, primitive, derivative writing. Especially when the author simply attempts to beat his moral code (which in this series is far more than just Objectivism) in your face with shallow characters rather than a more sophisticated message, or god forbid a storyline that didn't follow WoT so closely.

Game of Thrones was a great read, the serie had a few depressing, very dark moments. It was tough and gritty to the core and I loved it.
Sword of Truth was entertaining but I stopped reading the serie at the 6th or 7th book. I felt like the author was bashing my head with his philosophy and life lessons. I don't mind authors expressing their opinions, as long as they don't take their readers as fools.

That's kind of the point of the books, to get across his philosophy. He has always been open about that. If you read the books and didn't like that, well you can't really blame the author for something you ignored.
And again, HouShe, your opinions are far from fact, and it's kind of irritating that you present it as such. As I said before, to each their own, I could most likely tear apart any number of books you enjoy. I really don't care to debate the finer points of what you think makes a good book (because truly I do not care, I don't read books to feel validated by you). If you want that type of discussion, feel free to look elsewhere.

Eh, I think Goodkind should be read just for the storytelling. It doesn't have to be any more complicated than that. Looks like I'll be getting the new book eventually but I'm only halfway through the series at the moment.
As for Martin, yeah, he's a lot better. And I think I might cave and order HBO. It's just for a few months, right? And it's a lot more fun to be involved in the hype of something while it's happening. Have to decide pretty quick, though.

The pilot episode was really, really good. Very close to my memory of the opening few chapters (admittedly it's been awhile since I've read GoT). The filter they use was a bit weird at first, almost looks like a soap opera, but once you're used to it it's fine.
Really great ending point for the episode and I can't wait to see more. My only qualm is that Viserys and Danaerys are older than they are portrayed in the book. But due to the content of some scenes I can see why this was done (and the actors thy chose for the roles look quite good).

'supposedly good', does that mean you haven't read them? The first 3 or 4 were awesome, then it DID get bogged down in boring minutae (a whole chapter on a camp follower for example) but then just as you were thinking of quitting he would release a book that made you think "yes! this is why I read it". Then half the next book would cover the same story arc from another characters perspective and you would get depressed with it again lol. That and some of the characters got a bit annoying at times (Nynaeve's hair tugging as an example...). But then I think J R R Tolkien was similar, I remember finding tLOtR incredibly slow and quite boring and was amazed they made an exciting film out of it. The reason they (and tolkien) are so successful however was his world and central arc/story is brilliant. And Robert Sanderson is a brilliant choice for finishing the series, his 2 books so far have been amongst the best in the series in my opinion.

That aside, how long have we been waiting for the next GoT book? It seems like an eternity.
And based on that I can't get too excited about a TV series which I know has no conclusion...

I have to say that I really enjoyed the show. I admit that I haven't read the books (actually before I read this thread I didn't even know the show was based on a book  ), however I really like the story, characters and production values thus far. I hope the show does well!

Saw the first epp last night... enjoyed it. I had not heard of the author or this series of books until I started hearing talk about the show. I decided to NOT read the books first... because I've always found that Shows/movies based off books tend to fall short... especially if you REALLY loved the books. Thus I figured I'm more likely to enjoy the show if I've no knowledge of the source material. So far that has proven true... I enjoyed the first epp, but it did leave me wondering about a lot of things... it didn't introduce the world and its rules/history to me very well... fans of the books likely get it but being new to it there was not much of an 'origin story' as it where.

To be fair, there isn't much "origin" in the books. You sort of learn as you go, as more and more characters add insight to the history and rules of the world. I'm glad they didn't waste time with it, because it would take up a loooot of screen time and a lot of viewers (both new and people who've read the book) would likely tire of the lack of story.
Still, It can be a bit daunting for someone to pick up if you aren't at least a little familiar. I had to explain quite a few things to my roommate during the episode.

Gah... tell me he was not doing the 'Why is this happening' and 'Whats the deal with that?' sort of thing... I hate that... WATCH THE SHOW AND LEARN!!! If, as you say, the books didn't offer much info at the start either... then that is how this story is meant to be told. You didn't know anymore then he did when you read the first book... and you didnt bother someone else with a series of questions. Sorry... pet-peeve of mine.

Well, I used the internet to satisfy a lot of my questions during reading. Didn't have that luxury during the episode. In his defense, he wasn't really asking questions, I only gave a tidbit about things he wouldn't necessarily know about (the White Walkers, the Dire wolves, who the characters were in relation to each other [since this was hardly mentioned and I felt it was really important], stuff like that). Afterwards was when the questions began, which I enjoyed because I like talking about that kind of stuff. He does seem quite keen on reading the novels now, which is a good thing.
As someone who loves the books, I have not been disappointed with this episode. I am glad they kept all of the "adult" events that are crucial in setting the tone and characterization of the story. This episode was actually better than I thought it would be, and I had high expectations.

But... you said the books didn't give that info out in the start either... thus they were meant to be read and experienced in that way, where you learn as you go... and you didn't think an origin story was a good thing, but you felt he needed more info then the first epp provided... I'm confused. :?

I used "origin" in the sense that no real history of the land is given in the early portions of the book. The white walkers are talked about a bit more in the text (though not an incredible amount, I still don't know too much about them), as were the dire wolves. And of course the character names and relations are all mentioned/have somewhat of an introduction (however small). These things weren't lengthy portions of the book, not much more than what was given in the episode, but was worth knowing. I didn't go off on tirades or stuff that happens later in the books
