LRPR: Winchester Model 70 "Stealth" 308Win, customized Another Lars Larson project: o Factory HS-Precision stock modified; he incorporated an adjustable cheek rest, and gave it this "anti-theft" paint job Buttstock Detail My additions: o Long range scope base (20 MOA cant) o Leupold VariX-III 4.5-14x40, with after market Mil-dot reticle and target turrets o Leupold Weaver "low" quick release rings o Harris bipod with "swivels" o Sling (maker?) Scope and Mounts It is essentially a factory rifle where it counts and has not been accurized. On a good day can shoot <.75MOA. With 168gr Match it's capable out to 800.

if you can headshoot a zombie at 800 yards its good enough ive never cared less about MOA groups. if all the shots r in the head thats good enough.

Head shots at 800 (or 1000) are only seen in fiction. In the field the practical achievable accuracy is 2MOA, according to James Jarrett. At 800 yards that's approximately 16".
On the high-power range the 600 yard target has a 13" 10-ring. That's >2MOA. The X-ring is 7" in diameter, just over 1MOA.
400 yards would be approaching what I would consider the maximal practical extreme for head shotsl.

i stand corrected. from now on i shall say "as long as it can headshot zombies at 400 yards max its good enough"

Nice rifle Larry Jordan. Have you tried fine tuning handloads for it or is the 3/4 MOA factory ammo? Also is the scope Premier Reticles or?

In the late 90's I witnessed some remarkable handgun shooting. I was on the 500 yard line at Ben Avery High Power range for some KDR work, when "Smitty", who was having trouble getting his scoped AR10 on paper, stopped, stood, drew his Sig 9mm, and holding over for drop let a round fly down range. The target dropped into the pits, and soon emerged with a paster in the 9-ring!

Vanilla handloads.
When I first got into reloading, I experimented: bullet seating depth, neck-sizing, neck-reaming, brass-spinning. Now, I try to achieve accuracy through [reasonable] consistency. I try to make every load conform to SAAMI specs. I want to be able to chamber it in any rifle--bolt or semi-auto. I stick with medium burn rate powders (AA2520, IMR4064) and usually stay away from pressure extremes.

Jeezus! 500 yd paper shot with a 9mm semi-auto pistol? Did you guys ask him to do it again just to make sure it wasn't a fluke?
I can knock bowling pins down at 100yds with my 1911 fairly consistently but 500yds and on paper - worse yet in the 9 circle? Wow!

I sent the plain-jane scope with duplex reticle and low profile adjustments back to Leupold. A few weeks and a few hundred dollar$ later, back came my scope with what I now consider essential features: mildot reticle and turret adjustments. I was new to shooting when I purchased it and the web was just emerging. Now I just buy my scopes the way I want them from SWFA. It's cheaper in the long run.

Cool, all this time I had no idea they would customize on request. I had ordered through SWFA in the past with good results until I had saved up for a few years and went to purchase a mil style U.S.optics scope through them and I got the runaround because I was not military or other random .gov bureaucrat they would not sell a mil style scope to me, I went to Bear Basin outfitters and bought a really nice Zeiss instead with all the features I wanted plus some at a great price.

Was this bad experience during the ramp up in the sand box? 'Cause I've never had any trouble ordering any scope of any stripe. I ordered my Vari-X III LR 30mm 3.5-10x40 M3 +10 years ago without incident. It's a fantastic scope which is now part of the Mark4 line: LEU51850. I looked at the US Optics line. The whole line is about +$900 more than the Leupold. I like the 9 mildot allowance (vs. standard 5) for holdover. Which model USOptics scopes do you have? Which reticle?

Could have been because of the nastiness taking place over seas. I really wanted a customized ST10 but instead I wound up with a Zeiss Diavari 6-24x56. I am not sorry at all for buying the Zeiss, the glass is incomparably clear. Naturally the mildot only really works on 10x but it is a nice effective hold over gauge also at higher settings.

Yep, it was bought to use in an elephant culling hunt in Krueger National Park in 2006. And I fell in love with it. But that was back when I could buy ammo for about $25-30 per 20-rd box. Now it doesn't see much use at all. I have dies and the correct shellplate for my Dillon 550. I really need to get motivated and load some ammo for it.

I'd really need to be "motivated" to unload ammo for it. Forgive me. This ad from able's is selling Hornady Rifle Ammunition 85833, 458 Win Mag, Dangerous Game Expanding Heavy Magnum, 500 GR, 20 Rd/bx for $79.77. That's $4 per cartridge. Back in '94 I got to handle a Win70 in 375H&H. I don't remember shooting it (trauma induced ammesia?). It was a marvelous piece of engineering. I have yet to purchase any magnum chambered rifle. I've been tempted. Maybe something in 338 Lapua Magnum or 408 CheyTac.
