Hey everybody
It sucks that I've not been able to get on-line, on-board here so much, lately. Surgery has left me a whole lot weaker than I could have imagined, but it is getting better every day. Surgeon tells me not to expect to be banging on all 8 cylinders till mid - late March, for cryin' out loud....
That said, what energy/enthusiasm I am able to rouse is still pointed at this project (and Conan, too, of course). I've actually roughed out the first guard, and make a little progress with that every day. Slowly, slowly... Photos when its a little more "presentable" hahahahahahaha
You guys have all been so damn supportive, and have offered so many excellent ideas that I am aching to get deeper into this. And I will, I promise you, as I am able.
Thanks!

John, I'm glad to see you're still kicking! I hope that the pain is being kept to a low minimum.
At least you have the excuse of being able to walk around the house stark nekked.

Hey John,
Glad to hear you're all right and starting to get back on your feet. Take it easy, you hear?
You mentioned sending me a PM a while back around when this thread started, feel free to do that anytime... anyway, hang in there and get better, eh? I'll continue posting designs as they come up, if you don't mind...

Thought I'd post up this idea I had for a H/T Bastard. ![](http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/8899/customhtbastardcolor.jpg) Not the best picture in the world, but it works. specifically it's a type T4 scent stopper pommel, and I'm not sure what the guard would fall under, but I like it. It's a lot like the one on the Windlass Coustile. For reference the stock guard is 7 3/4" long, this one would be closer to 5".

As long we're giving suggestions, I had this idea for a viking-hilted longsword based on the Cawood sword. Something like this might go good with the HT Bastard and/or longswords. ![](http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y229/johnraptor/Art/VikingLongword-rend-web.jpg) P.S. Get better, John, but don't rush it.

That definitely looks doable. Hmmmm. Not sure about the long curved quillions, but hey... Only adversial comment is that maybe the pommel is a bit big for the grip, though?

Do you mean aesthetically, or in terms of balance/handling?

I'm not particularly certain about balance/handling so my main argument is aesthetic, yes. I took another look at it and I think it might look a little less outsized if the grip wasn't bottle-shaped like that. It'd take, what, two minutes to redo that drawing? Give it a spin (if you don't mind that is!), eh?

I gave it a simpler, beefier grip. ![](http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y229/johnraptor/Art/VikingLongword-rend-CMYK2.jpg)

See, its true what they say about there "being no accounting for taste"... I definitely like the first, ring hilted version!

I definitely like the shape & style of the bottle-necked grip better, but I do think it was a bit too thin.

OK, guys, I had answered SirTre's question about my doing some fantasy stuff on the "H/T customs" thread by saying I was working on one straight out of the mystic realms. Well, here it is, in sculpy clay, on the GSOW... ![](http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/johnskyfire/ORB%20HILT/sword.jpg) ![](http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/johnskyfire/ORB%20HILT/swordright.jpg) ![](http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/johnskyfire/ORB%20HILT/3front.jpg) ![](http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/johnskyfire/ORB%20HILT/right.jpg) ![](http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/johnskyfire/ORB%20HILT/back.jpg) ![](http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/johnskyfire/ORB%20HILT/top.jpg) Finished pommel will be bronze, of course. The ball/orb being held will either be colored glass or chromed steel (for those addicted to heavy pommel stiking hahahaha). I'm going to add some detail to the cuffs joining the grip, not sure exactly what yet. The weight is right for the GSOW and probably for the H/T longsword (I don't have one to weigh its pommel - if anybody wants to let me know the pommel weight for the longsword It'd be much appreciated.) I hate to show the first piece when its not one that I'll be able to offer within the price range I' had suggested (plus or minus $45 per piece, $90 per set of guard and pommel), but I know you'll understand the extra work going into finishing this one. So when I can get back to work at the foundry (maybe a week or so, depending on the Docs) I'll be getting the Orb pommel ready to cast. You know I'll be posting photos as soon as I've got it! More soon!

I dig it John... only a couple things... For me, it would be cooler if it were dragon claws clutching the orb... but I'm a huge dork. With that design, that means the pommel won't be peened, so it would be a screw on pommel? I hate screw on pommels.... especially if they are not sphere like. That means whenever they lossen, which they always eventualy do, when you re-tighten them they become off center and then look silly.

Thanks, Saito! The clenched fist is definitely on the to do list.
Aaron, I was thinking of doing a real bad-ass pommel... could call it the "moon" pommel - very cheeky, eh? Hahahahahaha...(oh yeah, I "crack" myself up!) Seriously, though, Thanks, man!
And Thank you, too, Sean. But just a couple more things... didn't you say somewhere that you were/are about 5'10"? Hell, thats not a "huge" dork by any means... more like average size, I'd say... (I'm about 5'10" myself...) hahahahahaha Actually, I really like the dragons claw idea a lot. Damn, so many cool ideas... so little time to do 'em all...
And you have hit a sore point with this pommel design. Since I'm doing these specifically for the H/T line of blades, they're all going to utilize the "tensioning nut" attachment. For most, that means they'll be removable, like the original H/T furniture. However, this pommel is going to be a special case (since I despise screw-on pommels and will not make one - ever) You're not going to believe how F'ing complicated this is going to be...
1) Place pommel onto tang, with fingers opened up. 2) screw in tensioner nut and peen the little sucker. 3) insert orb into position within the open fingers. 4) gently but firmly hammer fingers down tight onto orb (going to be interesting with the glass orb, less touchy for the steel orb) 5) for steel orb version, then weld finger-tips together and chase detail back in. Did I say F'ing complicated? Jees, I'm not even sure I want to do this anymore... hahahahahahahaha So, yeah, Sean, thanks for bringing it up...

Wow... that sounds like a huge pain in the $emprini. On the plus side tho... now I want one! After you successfully make one, we shall have to talk. As to my huge dorkness... I manage it horizontally rather then vertically. I'm only 5'10 but I'm currently 235lbs. Granted, I'm a smaller dork then 8 months ago when I was 280... but still pretty big.
