So here are a few sketches. More in a thread in Member Designs that will go up shortly! First a generic Viking guard : Then a katana-hybrid hilt with a fish-tail pommel. You can't see it from this view but the pommel actually ends in a cross shape, viewed from the top; this is extreme 90-degree side view. Half wrapped in itomaki with a bronze collar that leads down to a wooden grip with a bronze pommel... After that I present a sword hilt, which I admit was originally supposed to be a katana, but which could work perfectly well as a bastard or longsword hilt, with scent-stopper pommel and a guard with extended 'arms'. Finally, here are the hilt and pommel from my baby, Godbiter: The picture for this one was so big I had to scan it in two pieces... anyway, it's obviously an oversized Petersen type AE guard with a D-pommel, rings around a wooden or leather grip. Could be scaled up or down as needed; I think proportionally it's very nice for, say, the EMSHS. I'll come up with more soon, trust me... One last question-- what was the width of the EMSHS, the longsword and the bastard at the shoulders of the blade? This will make drawing more guards easier, scale-wise... thanks!

Great News!!! Just heard from Tinker, and he's fine with the idea!!! Just as you'd think, his only concern was that I He is The Man!
So its definitely on - I've done some drawings and will be making prototypes for the bastard sword guards soon. I'll post photos of them as soon as they're done. Ghost, Aaron - I think you guys are going to be happy... Like I said - vote early and often!!!
Elheru Aran, I knew you'd come up with some killer designs, but - whoa dude!!! Those are F'ing beautiful!!! PM coming at ya.

Tinker is the man. I love that his only concern is rooted in maintaining the proper functionality

Glad to hear Tinker's okay with it, with some useful advice, to boot. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with, John.

John a good idea is to have the ones you are customizing for weigh the component parts for you. this will give you an exact target weight for each component. when i made my hydrid jian from a n/t bastard blade i had a problem with the balance/ harmonics and had to add a brass pin to change the balance back to design. the cutting node was off by about 3 in due to 3/4 in balance shift.

Why would Tinker mind? In the end it just means more sales of H/T line swords, for which he gets a piece of the pie. I got a chance to see some of Greybeards fittings for a Katana recently when I visited Ken and Midori in SoCal. They had a tsuba and menuki John did there... awesome work. Makes me want to buy a katana just so I can have him make some hardware for it.

Sounds to me like a perfectly suitable excuse for another sword

All of those pommel designs are awesome, Elheru. I particularly like the first fish tailed on, it would definitely be a great replacement for the stocker on a longsword.

I've got my supply of H/Ts laid in from the big sale, and am eagerly awaiting John to work his magic.
Some of the work in evidence so far, and comments from others have led me to believe that they will be total coolness.

will these pommels be peened or hex nut assembly as most of the swords are now?
I'd imagine that so long as the pommel had the right sized hole drilled into it we all could just get our own nut from the hardware store (if you didn't already have it- bought only a bare blade)

depends on type of nut. if you have a recessed pommel nut with allen head... cant find em anywhere. let alone to match color with the bronze. but if you have it where the nut fits over the top like some jian.... you could use brass.

For myself, the recessed nut could be any colour as it is very hard to see at all once it's in the pommel what with it being recessed and all, and the hole being kinda shadowy Really, when the nut is screwed on there is only one edge of it that is even exposed. I'm fairly sure I could find recessed pommel nuts with allen heads in brass- I live in Windsor Ontario and being that this is a manufacturing industry type of town we have quite a few specialized tool shops and even places that can help with custom made stuff. If needed I would be more than happy to do some homework on this and get a bunch. Then I could mail these to John who in turn could include these in his shipments. Even if I can't find them in brass I know I can get them in the usual grey. We could also see if Tinker has a line on a bunch of these. There are ways to change the colour of regular grey steel ones. A light heat treat with a simple butane lighter could bring the colour to something gold-like. Maybe a touch of the right paint.\

I believe most (if not all) fencing foil etc hex nuts are 6mm and threaded metric at 6x1. The ATrim and Valiant Armoury nuts are 5mm and threaded 1/4"x20tpi. Not sure what Hanwei uses.
