Hello all, If you had to fight for your life using one of your swords, which one would you grab? Home invasions happen here sometimes. One just took place a mile or two from me the other day. I've wondered what I would do if that happened, which weapon I would grab, etc.. What would you do? I would not have time to run back to my room and unlock my metal gunsafe. I have a teenage son and his friends are always in and out, grabbing and handling stuff, so my guns stay locked up. So I would have to make do with whatever I could get too quickly, depending on where in the apartment I was: My edged weapons collection is on my living room wall, my butcher knives are in a kitchen drawer, and I keep one sword in a verticle stand by my bed. So, If I had to truly fight for my life with one of my edged weapons, I prefer something light and curved. I have some beautiful Viking swords, but I don't like their feel (I also have some great spears ). I prefer either these three swords: The 1860 Lt Cavalry sabre, my katana, or MRL's Scimitar (same as CS's Shamshir). I have owned 2 or 3 of the former, and have one of MRL's repros, and I have a great katana, and have held and handled MRL's scimitar at their showroom. I think it would come down to either the katana or the Shamshir. Both are light, extremely well balanced, quick and deadly. I just like the cav sabre for hand protection and the guard can be used as a big set of brass knuckles if needs be. Truth be known, as I consider my self as an archer, I would love to put an arrow into a home invader!! So, which of your swords would you choose to fight with if you had no other choice? My H/T longsword, quick, and deadly point.
Wouldn't mind having my shamshir either.

If for some reason the shotgun or pistol couldn't be accessed/used it would be my PPK. It resides alongside the shotgun by the bed. The Raptor would just not work in the apt. too long. A wakizashi would be great but I don't have one.

I'd either use my War Hammer or my pair of Kukris. Both are fairly close range so I wouldn't have to worry about getting tangled up and both are lethal when used right.

I can foresee almost no situation where I would be using one of my swords... I keep a couple knives at various points around the house... there is one near my bed as well. I'd grab which ever one was closest to me when the need arises I expect.
If I had time to go to where my weapons are... I'd likely go for my Warclub or a hand axe. Now, if I had to pick a weapon for a duel or something of that nature... it would most likely be my Atrim LPM 1516.

Frankly, violent home invasion is just not gonna happen where I live. The likeliest scenario, and I'm not even kidding here, in which I'd have actual use for my swords is finding Narnia in my wardrobe. But, for the sake of discussion... The Windlass Coustille. Not only is it the most handy for the close quarters scenario of home defense, as well as usually the one closest at hand, It's also the only sword I could possibly swing around in here without causing way more damage than any potential intruder.

For my choice I´ll have to ¨stretch¨ the definition of sword a bit. I´ll grab my Boker Combat Smatchet for my right hand, and possibly a convenient chair, lamp, ect. for my left. www.gutterfighting.org/smatchet.html

Hey Mok, You said violent home invasion is just not going to happen where you live. Why do you say that and where do you live that such a thing would not happen, if I may ask? Because here it has happened in cities and in lonely country homes. Where could one live where that could not happen? Just curious friend. Thanks, FB

Once I have exhausted all of my cheap chinese throwing thingies (I say ALL because I'm terrible at throwing knives) I would probably start throwing furniture and screaming like a wild man. My apartment thing is too small for a bladed weapon longer than 12".

Just for the sake of discussion..... my Grosse Messer. No... Really. This is taking into account:
Most home invasion occurrences in my part of the world involve at least one adversary armed with a firearm (although usually a small caliber handgun); creating a scenario where most sword-wielding defenders would be at a disadvantage unless the invader is completely inept (but fortunately, there are MANY of those out there)
I'd feel VERY disadvantaged making a face to face encounter in a hallway or any other choke-point, where there's insufficient maneuver room to properly wield a sword, and no cover / concealment.
But, yeah, if all my firearms mysteriously vanished, and since I don't have a battle axe or a pole arm, I'd go for the Grosse Messer.

I live in Oulu, Finland, on the sixth floor of an apartment building mostly populated by students, situated at the tip of an islet in the middle of the Oulu river, night next to yet nicely removed from the city center. Apart from the location, any outside intruder would have to pass two locked doors and five floors of easier loot and/or victims before they'd even see the apartment door (also locked) of me and my two flatmates, and then they'd have to pick the furthest room of the three to invade and force that door, too (it's locked for privacy). And if a flatmate, neighbor or some such "insider" got violent - for whatever reason; given my current cohabitants I honestly can't think of one that isn't even more far-fetched than finding a door to fantasyland in my closet (I'll admit, I have been looking) - swording them in the face really wouldn't be on my list of possible responses.
It's not that this place is so nice violence doesn't happen, I've been almost mugged several times in this general part of town and almost beat up several times more, it's just that breaking and entering my place would make no sense at all from any even remotely sane, profit-oriented criminal point-of-view.
Unless there's a psycho slasher movie villain after me personally, of course, but that's not really something I have it in me to seriously worry about. (It's the clowns that keep me up at night.)

Yep, I live in an apartment too. I have a repro Ames U.S. 1861 Naval Cutlas. Perfect for close quarters. I also have a short African Iklwa spear like Shaka Zulu's on that movie. Heck, for that matter, I have a couple of walking canes, just old, ugly, twisted home made walking canes made out of twisted young trees or vines. Hard as rocks too. They would be weapons in themselves for that matter. FB

Of all the swords I plan to own, there's only a few that I'd use in a home defense scenario if I had to; and all of them are short enough to be swung indoors without fear of hitting anything:
Traditional Filipino Weapons Kambantuli/Janap/Straight Kris Windlass Steelcrafts D-Guard Bowie Knife (more a short sword than anything with a 17" blade)/Russian Kindjal Windlass Steelcrafts Cobra Steel Kindjal/Lakonia
However, whichever of those I chose, I would also pair it up with a hand-axe that could be thrown, like the Hanwei Throwing Axe, for a bit of range or a secondary melee weapon (more to hang onto with an axe than a throwing knife). Of course, that's only assuming I couldn't get to the short shotgun I plan to own for just that purpose.

For a unarmored duel, I'll take my albion crecy. For in my home or armored duel I'd take my warhammer or flanged mace.

One of my type XIII for sure, considering that the opponent will probably be unarmored, the AT1326 or Tinker's grand espée de guerre, depending on the situation, the 1326 is shorter and faster, but one blow of the Tinker should put any unarmored opponent very displeased about his decision... There's also my Hanwei practical pro elite that could do the trick

well 1st i wud git sum grammar lesuns and lern how 2 spell n the english langwage.
The title of this thread bugs the hell out of me, but I'm an English tutor, so I guess I'm just picky, haha.
On a serious note, I would probably grab something like a machete, or a tactical ninja sword, because they really require a LOT less technique, and if some the dude is trying to kill me, the last thing I'm going to worry about is what kind of stance I'm in. I'd rather focus on beating him until he no longer moves.
