The way I see it, The sword was donated by Paul Chen/Cheness anyway for Mike to do this test. Even if it wasn't, its his money that he worked for, so if shooting swords with guns is what he wants to do then thats his choice and right.
To each his own, I mean everyone here has bought swords, by the same argument one could say "I don't see a point in spending money on a sword in modern times, you should do spend it on or donate it to blah blah blah"
Who are they to tell people how to spend their money. How many of us would have swords right now if we had listened when someone said something like this to us?

Well said Justin. The sword was given to Mike specifically for a shooting test and he carried this out in a safe, controlled environment. Really the blade did as it was supposed to and the fact it didn't break at the areas where there was damage speaks for the high quality of the blade.

I find it really interesting that the Tenchi did not fare as well against the .45 ACP as the Hanwei Banshee did... Could that be attributed to a comparitive softness of the Tenchi vs the Banshee?

I would hazard to guess that it is because the blade on the banshee is almost twice as thick as the tenchi blade, and it has a LOT more meat close to the edge. It's really more like a heavy short-bladed cutlass with a katana-ike grip.

This thread sealed my decision to order a Tenchi. Not so much how the blade fared against bullets, but that the owner would donate one of his swords for someone to shoot.

I was completely impressed by this experiment. It clearly demonstrates the properties and qualities of a blade I am going to purchase. Thanks Mike. I don't know how to give karma or you would have one more. I fell your pain, and I am entertained. I love both firearms and blades. It is very cool to use both in this way. I think all of us have imagined a comic book sword slice of a bullet in our minds. Now we can see it for real.
I salute you, and may your arm bo true and steady.

Wow, I remember this thread. I got to hold the sword in the video, it was a very enlightening experience to get a much closer look in person.

The European sword comment came from using something he holds dearly as you all know how my feelings on katanas are ! Swords deserve RESPECT, not to be destroyed with firearms even if it is a second . It could still have been used to learn and teach a JSA. Maybe if he had of dropped it from a height; then tried with various targets that a katana would actually cut at; then a little "European sword vs Katana" duelling ; then maybe aflex test with a very large weight( i.e driving over it with a JCB), for instance , I felt would have been more appropriate. Shootermike you know I respect you but as Katanas are my forte, and you DESTROYED it with a gun of all things, you can see why I am not too happy mate . Wasn't It guns that forced Samurai from the battlefield? Hmm, I always thought so. IMO, ShooterMike was doing an homage to those final battles between blade and bullet. And showed us the strength that the sword had, but also the ability of being able to counter thousands of years of sword arts by masters by mere peasants with little training. Which in turn (over the years) would allow for other nations peasant class, to overcome their "warlordish" oppressors (In NO WAY am I saying that Samurai were warlords or oppressors). Also there is always those "urban legends" of how Samurai would cut bullets out of the air, and this goes to prove that it indeed was possible (however, unlikely). (Yes, I realize that that quote was a very old post.)
