I don't like the Chinese or Japanese swords, so I only recommend Euros to people.

Question is : Chris, what are you looking for ? And remember, often 2 less quality sword arent generally worth one good.

Actually on second thoughts scrap what I said above. The one thing I have wanted to get for ages but have never been able to justify is a nice custom scabbard for one of my Albion’s. $250 will not pay for a whole custom scabbard but it will go a long way and give me the incentive to put the rest of the money up Now we're talkin'!

Tools Brenno: tools is an awesome answer & I have been stocking up on just that over the last 2 months. I had only a power drill, dremel, table saw & typical pliers/screwdrivers, before the searching began. I've been carefully searching Kijiji, sales at hardware stores, and searching my city for better supply stores. Being that I live in a city that once thrived on the auto industry there are still great options for me. I also found a fantastic metal supplier just down the road from where I work. So far here's what I've added to my collection: -2 wheel bench grinder, switched out one wheel for a buffing/polish wheel -polish compounds -drill press & assorted titanium bits -belt grinder/wheel sander combo -jewelers saw with variety of blades -8 piece standard mixed file(s) set -rasp -12 piece mixed jewelers file set -table vise -hand graver -hacksaw Hee hee! I friggin' love tools! Man I wish I had access to my old high school shops- we had the most advanced tech wing I've ever seen- full auto body shop, electrical/electronics shop, drafting room, 2 full wood shops, plastics shop, full metal shop with specialty jewelers equipment. Some of my fav stuff were the wood and metal lathes, spot welder, arc welding, kilns, centrifuge for casting precious metals/ lost wax casting... everything I could ever want! I plan on always adding to the tool collection but right now I really want to get a new kind of sword- SBG does that to all of us.

You know, I just noticed this, but nobody, nobody has any imagination! With 250$, who says you're limited to just one sword? Are we in some kinda Sword Highlander or something? Personally, if I had that kind of money to blow, there's all sorts of swords and knives I could get. However, the first that really come to mind (that would leave me enough left for shipping), I'd choose the Hanwei Practical Gongfu Sword, the Hanwei Military Dadao (I just like the rugged look of that thing), and the Musashi Natural Wood O Tanto, all from Kult of Athena. Or I could go for like half a dozen of the knives on my list. Or, if I was just looking for swords, I'd go with the Windlass Qama and Kindjal from KoA, and then the Munetoshi Yuki from SwordNArmory. great mention- in fact I am leaning heavily towards a 2 sword combo buy. Why? Because 2 is more than 1 last time I checked ;D

Part of my decision will include careful study of the quality of the sword(s) I choose. I agree that it'd be a waste to just buy a bunch of crap. I do also believe it is possible with the help this forum provides in sorting out good from bad that I can get more than one sword if I choose well. Right now it's enough fun just exploring the thought experiment with everyone

dude vince, you're not supposed to troll yourself! I have more right to troll myself than anyone in existence! Which could explain why my parallel double from the next dimension over is constantly giving me the finger...

Related question: Would you pick a VA sword or H/T? (comparable versions from each maker) What does everyone think about 1060 spring vs. 5160 spring? how about overall build quality? For the price? H/T without a doubt, they're just so damn cheap right now, as long as you're willing to do some DIY, or pay someone to do it for you. If you want out of the box performance, VA all the way. As far as spending 250, I'd just save it for the new Atrim Xa.2 that just came out. Or the new XII.3, can't really decide...

I'd get the H/T single hander and a massage.

Related question: Would you pick a VA sword or H/T? (comparable versions from each maker) What does everyone think about 1060 spring vs. 5160 spring? how about overall build quality? Until recently I had never touched a second generation or later version of the VA 303s. I have now, and I'm very impressed with it, BUT it does not compare to the Hanwei Tinker EMSHS. I'm not saying the EMSHS is better, I'm just saying it is an entirely different sword. the same is true for the longswords offered by these two companies. in fact, the more I learn about the swords we so often compare, the less alike I think they are. I see no one has answered about the 1060 vs 5160 question. the real question (in this case) is not which steel is better but which comany does a better job with their steel. because the steel type really doesn't make that much difference but the treatment of it does. I like both but from the reports and comments I have heard I would say that VA has a more consistant result. if you compare the best of each company then there's nothing to complain abut either however I think with VA heat treat issues are less likely, though there have been very few problems with Hanwei Tink heat treat there have been inconsistencies with some batches being harder or softer (so I have heard anyway) but even the softer batches are still good useable swords (from what I hear) so. . . I give the edge to Valiant's 1060 with the caveat that Hanwei Tink ain't nothin to gripe about.

$250 would just about cover the Windlass King Henry Ceremonial sword from the Tudors. It is available at Kult of Athena for $230, plus $18 for sharpening. Attractive and practical. I haven't seen anything about it in these forums. Does anyone have an opinion on this sword, one way or the other? kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=882002

I would get a bare blade from the h/t line and get a custom hilt made for it...peened of course (in fact I am doing that now ). Cost of blade is less then a 100 bucks and the hilt job is 150 bucks.

Just today I picked up Hanwei's Lionheart for around $200.
A little bit on top and the vendor taught me a Japanese technique for killing 3 guys in 8 moves. I forget what it was called though D:
Great guy, I highly recommend Silver Sword Armouries in Southern Ontario.
