I'll need a little more than $250 to get a good gladius. I'll use the $250 to get the KC gladius and at least another $20 (and time) to get some hardwood ball, bone for the hilt and grip. Alternatively I could spend the $250 to get a blade from Mark Morrow and spend a great deal more time and resources to built up a gladius. At the moment, I would rather save up the $250 to trade a spatha from a friend of mine... I am getting lazy these days

hmmmm for 250? I'd get the Hanwei Cromwell Mortuary. By all accounts, it's quite a good sword, it's very attractive, and you'd have some left over for files to sharpen it up. That said, I would also second the Hanwei EMSH if you've got the time to put in a little work. Then maybe grab a GDFB buckler to go with it and Voila! You have the makings of an I.33 kit.

I would throw it in the pot and be half way to getting my next ATrim. but if I had to buy something with it right now I think I'd go for a VA 303, H/T GSOW or longsword. maybe a SwordNArmory kat but I'm getting picky about kats and 250 isn't likely to cut it even from SNA or Hauwei. I second that.

OK- back to the thread topic now I made my order today and here's the what and why: I decided on H/T EMSHS and H/T Longsword Blade, both from KOA. Including shipping the order was just over the $250 I'd alloted myself (good thing I just got cheque for $25 from those surveys I do. Total price including shipping worked out to $275Canadian. I was really bummed that I didn't jump on the crazy sale on Tinkers last month but I just didn't have any spare cash. The reason I was tapped out was because I was stocking up on tools. Last month I got a drill press, 2 wheel bench grinder, belt/disc sander, vise, files, and more. I mention these because it's also part of why I chose these swords. I am a DIY kinda guy and love the idea of making my own fittings for the LS, as well as 'tuning' the EMSHS. I mean, why get all these tools if not to use them? I also really like the guard on the EMSHS a lot, more than the thinner style on say, the GSOW. -and- this way I can put a VA sword (the other major contender) on my x-mas list! No harm in that, and you never know. It was (and still is) a very close fight between the EMSHS and the VA Arming but it's my nature to be thrifty and since the EMSHS was still on sale for a great price I was able to get 2 blades for only $20 more than it would've cost me for the one VA (shipping included). Definitely the VA is also a fantastic buy...but there's always another sword we want, right?

Excellent choices, Chris. I'm looking forward to seeing what you cook up for the longsword fittings. Keep us posted.

-thanks. I don't know yet whether I'll go traditional or not- don't think I'll be able to finally decide until it's in my hands.

Congrats! I also think you made a great choice: I'm alway happy to see someone go the diy road! Looking forward seeing what you'll do with the longsword blade and your tuning of the EMSH. That longsword blade has so much potential.
