So in my opinion the Roman gladius is possibly the best protection if someone breaks into your house due to its size and...well...awesomeness (excluding firearms because that's not very honorable?!). So the random question is, which gladius would you feel safest with if someone tried to break in and steal your stuff? Personally I would go with my Windlass pompeii, because its very light, and its the only one I have! (excluding my Deepeeka but that doesn't really count) ;D

I don't have one, but I like the look and reputation of the Valiant Armory Praetorian, myself. However, if it came down to personal blade preference, I'd have to go with the Windlass Russian Kindjal; it's almost the exact size of the average gladius, it's double edged, and it's got a curve to it and I love curved blades. Either that or a plain old wakizashi, really.

Yeah the Preatorian looks awesome, especially the new version with the upgraded scabbard, might go and get one of those!

For cheap I go with a cold steel machete or one the windlass cobra steel series.

Yeah the Preatorian looks awesome, especially the new version with the upgraded scabbard, might go and get one of those! I've already got it on my list of swords to get. That was really the only thing keeping me from getting it earlier (well, that and I'm broke); I just didn't like that floppy leather sheath. The upgraded one looks much better and includes rings in order to wear it on a belt or baldric if you wanted.

Well, since I already have the Praetorian (and only the Praetorian), then I'd go with, well, my Praetorian. Yeah. Need to do a little bit of stuff with it to make it "most excellent". Oh yeah.

If money is no question, probably a Fulham from Mark Morrow, but for now my blunt Deepeeka Pompeii is good enough ...well I would not use any of my swords for self defense of course...just hypothetical

I keep this one tucked under the sofa. Sharpened of course. Ah, I'd forgotten the Windlass Gladiator for a moment there. Thanks for reminding me Ric. With that said, I'd be a little afraid of sitting on your couch since I've seen what you can do with that thing.

I prefer a shotgun (call me dishonorable if you must), but if I were to trust my life to a sword, any sword, the Kris Cutlery gladius would be way up on my list... maybe even at ths top of it....

There are numerous magazines that deal with home protection/defense. Most of the articles and advertisements are for 12 ga shotguns, .45 cal. handguns, and AR-15 rifles. All of those guns are horrible home defense weapons. Both the shotgun and .45 cal will be deafening in a 20 by 20 foot bedroom and have blinding muzzle flash. Furthermore, a .45 cal and .223 bullet will have enough momentum to easily go through the walls in your house. So, I see the usefulness of having a good sword for home defense since most distances in a home (<20 ft) can be covered with a good lunge. Personally, I have several knives in various rooms and a machete by my bed. Eventually, I intend to have a short and long sword as well - 5160 or 9260 steel to handle accidental encounters with furniture. However, I also have a Ruger target pistol and Colt revolver for home defense as well. I recommend having both a good blade and a good gun to cover all home defense needs. They go together like peanut butter and jelly...or an M4 and Kabar!

the ultimate home defense weapon is a pump action 12ga shot gun because it dos not mater if its loaded or not they hear you pump it and they are gone, and sense i don't have one of those i would go with this old machete/corn knife got two of them scary as hell looking

They go together like peanut butter and jelly...or an M4 and Kabar! Ok so the question I have to ask you is as follows: What real life experience do you have with firearms to base your decisions on? I know you say you have a Ruger target pistol and a Colt revolver but that doesn't mean anything. What caliber, .22lr? Look not to rain on you but I've fired a variety of firearms and every firearm I've owned I've fired without hearing protection at least a couple of times just so I know what they sound like should I have to shoot them without protection for my ears. A .45acp is very loud I won't argue there. Its my favorite handgun round and the 1911 base is my favorite platform for the .45acp. That said I know what it'd sound like in an enclosed room and yes it'll be deafening but I'll settle for the ringing ears than have to face an armed perp with a sword of any kind. The muzzle flash of either firearm isn't too much of an issue - unless you have multiple attackers your first shot or double tap should be sufficient. Other than that there's a reason that a bright flashlight is recommended as an accompaniment for your defense firearm. It helps reduce the effect of muzzle flash on your eyes. Oh yeah regarding muzzle flash - on a 1911a1 the muzzle flash isn't bright enough that it renders my night vision useless and even after firing several rounds I can still see my target in the dim light that would be available in my living room. As for a shotgun - the length of the barrel subdues the muzzle flash enough that it really isn't an issue for most people - that is unless your shotgun is ported. In that case it might be a problem. Frankly I think its a joke when people say they're going to defend their homes with a sword. I've studied martial arts for quite some time and the few times I've had to investigate strange noises I've gone with a shotgun in hand and if I have the time also with a 1911 on my hip. I don't reach for a sword, staff, nunchucku etc. I reach for my firearms first. I've had to draw down on would-be burglars on more than a couple occasions. Each time I haven't had to actually shoot someone but each time I've come damned close. If they hadn't left I'd have shot'em. Twice they've been armed - once with a knife and a crowbar. The other time I could see one of'em with a small handgun. Both those times I was damned glad I had my 12ga. If I'd had a sword in my hand in the situation with the perp and a handgun I probably wouldn't be here today. Gun trumps sword any day. Oh yeah if you think you can close 20 ft before you get a couple of rounds of lead in you then you're dreaming... either that or you've got super human speed. Again, no offense but I can't stress enough how unintelligent it is to take a knife or sword to what might be a gun fight. Oh and about honor and guns - in a situation like home defense - screw honor. I'd rather be alive with my family safe and sound than have someone write on my tombstone and perhaps my family's tombstones too that I died honorably with my sword in hand.

All well made points Sam. If a person owns a firearm, that would be the best choice. A hand gun would be the best choice if available, but a lower caliber is best for less wall penetration in urban environment. as for 12 g i agree about flash.
I disagree about certain firearms, such as a magnum of any type. the colt 1911 .45 cal acp is the best choice for a handgun. the boxer rebellion that spawned the gun is point in case enough. knock down power, slower moving projectile, etc. also the 12g would be less likely to penetrate walls.... depending upon load.
as for me tho... i dont own a firearm. and i know the subject of knife in a gun fight has many debates. gun always says it is stupid. knife always quotes honor and adeptness. i once had a guy ask me if not owning a firearm, and war broke out in the streets what i would do. i told him after my first cut i would have a gun. macho is as macho... well likes to think it is. you know.
truth be told. the best home defense weapon is your mind. being resourceful is part of that. if you have no firearm, or have one and cannot get to it, what would happen. many safety oriented folks have a trigger lock or keep it in a locked cabinet. delays could happen. would you contend on struggling with the keys at the last minute or grab your sword off the wall and get busy?
in my case not owning a firearm, i would grab my jin-shi jin that is only 27" blade and get busy. if i got shot, well lets dont say died with honor. i am old school, but not that old school. there is no honor in wasted life. lets just say i did the best i could with what i had. if i couldnt get to a sword, the there is always the favorite framing hammer... 28oz, up side the head.
still the best defense is the mind. preparation is the key. what do you do to prevent or deter an invasion. my mother in law is a little lady of 70+ yrs. she has an alarm and a german shephard that lives indoors. we live almost around the corner. she also has a very nice bowie knife. she also doesnt own a gun. she is terrified of them. we had to leave town one weekend and was concerned for her since she saw an invasion took place in same tow. so i left a can of beer on the poarch next to a rather large pair of men's boots.

Yeah, I'd second what Tre said.
Guns are great if ya got one. Reminds me of a story I heard about a green horn asking an oldtimer if he thought he needed a gun, old guy replied you might never need one but if you do you'll need it right now. LOL not really on topic just always liked that.
For various reasons some people don't have guns. People use what's at hand, or not depending on their nature I guess.
On a few occasions I have resorted to armed violence. Each time I armed myself with what ever was handy. Truth be told so far I'm glad it was never a gun. Come to think of it, I did reach for a firearm to defend myself with once, the circumstances were complicated but I was being attacked by a fellow with a hatchet, a friend that was there strongly advised me not to use the gun so I didn't. It worked out and no one got shot or chopped up. Well my friend did lose a piece of finger but that was earlier.
I don't argue that a gun is the best defense if it comes to that. I'm just saying that guns, and swords I guess, can to be sorta final.
These kind of threads I don't take too seriously. We're just talking about our swords really.

Wow Sam you live in a bad neighborhood. If you are constantly getting home invaders maybe your best home defense weapon should be a better front door.

I have a red-oak boken (minus the plastic tsuba) laying by my side of the bed. I live in Canada so if an intruder bursts through the door and he's armed with a knife, stick, bat or salmon, my using a gun to defend myself would land me in jail anyway. Plus, the chances of my kid killing himself with the boken are relatively slim.

That's why I'm grateful to live in Texas; someone invades my home, I can tear him up with an uzi if I want and the law can't say a damn thing about it because it's my home and I'm justified to use any means to protect it. On a side note, much as I hate sounding like an ass, you wouldn't have to worry about your kid shooting himself if you taught him proper respect for the weapon instead of keeping it locked away where it'll seem like a forbidden fruit; the proverbial cookie in the cookie jar after being told no, as it were.

Tre - in a home defense situation honor is meaningless. If our country gets invaded I'd feel like a real ass if I didn't have a firearm. Remember we are not ninja, samurai, knights etc. Now that's not to say I wouldn't have a variety of blades on me in that situation but guns are just more effective in modern combat.
Ric - I know this is just casual talk but there are too many people who really think they can cross a room in the dark to attack an intruder before they get shot. These people have either seen too many movies or played too many video games - or both.
Facina - I used to live in some really bad places. Now I live in a small city in the midwest. Evev here though I'm prepared for trouble. Of course aside from me though any intruders would have to deal with Shaed and frankly I think me with a gun is less intimidating than her if she thinks you are going to hurt her pack.
Zen - its laws like that which makes me glad I don't live in Canada.
Vince and Zen - i have 4 children in my home ages 15 mo, 2.5 yrs, 6 yrs, and 12 yrs. The toddlers are too small to get to the firearms and my 5 and 12 yr olds know where tge firearms are and how use them if they need to. My 6yr old is a crack shot with his 10/22 (open sights) and is fair with a .22 handgun. My 12yr old is proficient enough with a 9mm and a 20 guage. I have no worries that they will shoot themselves or others accidentally. Both are very familiar with the 4 basic rules of firearms.
Oh yeah none of my defense firearms are locked and are readily accessible by all members of my family that can use them.
Its like Vince said - teach them properly and early and you won't have a worry
