Another safety thread, kind of. I had a little "accident" last night, and thought i would share it.
My swords are stationed on my desk, a LARGE "L" shaped desk, and when i'm around, no one goes near them. Yesterday night i noticed my brother left one of his shirts thrown on my desk, whatever the reason was. I pulled it off, and suprise- my wakizashi (a Hanwei practical) was inside it. Unsheathed. The sword came charging towards my hand, ha foward, and either by sheer luck or momentary superhuman reflexes, i managed to pull it out of the way. Almost. A rather respectable chunck from the side of my finger (left hand, index finger, top section) was lopped off. I am grateful for the case ending with just this. Except from the fact that my finger currently looks like it has "the black touch of corruption", no serious or permanent damage was caused. (But now i'll have to lay off guitar hero for a week or two, at least)
So, what can we learn from this-
1- DON'T LET PEOPLE NEAR YOUR SWORDS. Tell whoever is living with you that this territory is off limits unless stated otherwise. 2- When getting back after not being around, take a glance at your posessions to assure they're actually where they're supposed to be. 3- It's better to position swords in a not accessible display or something
and 4- Hanwei's practical series seems to be very practical indeed.
My brother got the bashing he deserved, the whole family got another lecture, and the case was closed. I seriously hope you'll take some advice from this, you can neve be too careful (and also, clean cuts by very sharp objects tend to sting horribly)
pics are not provided, as i'd like you to keep your lunch/dinner inside.

Gah, that sucks. I hate those types of cuts in particular. Lucky for me my family knows better than to touch ANYTHING in my room. My own mother doesn't even come into my room if she can help it, and it's her own house. Friends know better, too. Hope you heal fast.

This is a problem that I have to lecture people in the house time and time again. I know that the word ignorant is constantly used by people these days, but it's better than calling my own brother, cousins, and friends stupid. I have to admit it gets tiring to constantly have to tell people not to touch any of my swords and knives hanging on the walls because each and every one of them is either sharp enough to cut paper with ease or in the case with the sword just able to. They also like to try and touch the blade as well, which we all know is something you should never do. I think the issue is that they don't take the swords and knives seriously. All they see is "Oooh shinies!" on the walls that they do not respect as weapons designed with the intention of killing other people like a gun. I guarantee that they would show a great deal more or respect if they were educated on the same level they are with firearms. Currently I'm taking an old bookcase with doors, getting rid of the shelves, and installing some hooks to hang the swords inside with the hope they won't go in. If I see anyone near them, a lock is going on. :/

That's probably the best way to go about it, anyway, Miekka; and a great idea, at that.

People fear my wrath enough that they do not even go near them unless I have given express permission. I only let one person touch them, and he's a good buddy of mine who I know is trustworthy, and treats the weapons with the proper amount of respect. That and he had to sit through an hour-long lecture from me about my particular preferences as to my weapons' treatment, so I feel he knows what's expected. He's got a few years of advanced kung fu under his belt, including a fair amount of weapons stuff, so he knows what's expected. My brother's an idiot, so I don't lethim near anything at all. When I brought home my katana, the first thing the idiot did was reach out and run his index finger along the blade, cutting his finger open. This is after I commented that "This is the sharpest thing I've ever touched." I guess some people have to learn the hard way, hahaha!

I can't really remove the bandage at this point, as the wound might re open. By the point i'll be able to remove it, it won't look that serious. (It wasn't too serious on the firstplace, but just looked really disturbing)
I think i'll add it anyway though. Might be of some use to people in the future.

I here ya, my girlfriend would not let me bring them out when people were about, I have lots of nieces and nephews, so I altered this case to fit em in to keep her happy and tiny fingers safe. Just a quick pic of how it turned out. There is a lock on this case too top left side justout of shot. Attachments:

That's a nice looking case, though I feel kind of bad for the one that's invisible when it's closed.
I have a gun cabinet and another gun safe that hold most of my stuff. The rest are above my headboard, behind a much of other stuff, all of which is absolutely no-touch. Though I do have a few just lounging on the floor...should either sell those or store them somewhere...
Hope the healing is going well, pika.

In a society where swords are vestigial, people are quick to forget how dangerous a sword can be.
I don't mean just family, friends, etc. Owners are the ones responsible for safety and sometimes forget that this responsibility extends beyond their direct presence.
You can never keep a sword 100% away from stupidity, nut sitting on a desk or wall, unsecured, is just asking for trouble.
As much as we love our swords, and love how they look on display, they aren't toys or paintings. If you have people who can't be FULLY trusted not to mess with them, YOU are responsible to keep them locked up or otherwise secured.
If your door or closet doesn't lock, and you can't make/buy a nice display case(understandable, since that can be quite costly for even a simple setup), then maybe you should consider heavy zip-ties. Same as peace-tying at the Renn Faires.
If one cannot (or WILL not, and I've known people who just don't care enough...) take the proper steps to keep a sword secured as needed, I personally believe one shouldn't own a sword.
Just like if you own a handgun, especially with children, you're very much responsible to keep it secured. Of course, secure means inaccessible when needed. In the case of a firearm, one might keep it locked away when not home, but moved to the drawer of a nightstand at night.
So maybe when you're not around, the swords should be tucked away in the closet and only brought out when you're there watching over them. Yeah, it's probably a PITA, but preventing sword injury is no time to get lazy.

for a long time I kept all my swords locke in a closet. my new place doesn't have a suitable closet so I have been keeping them in my work-room on a shelf. the kids mostly avoid this room and they have shown me they do not try and get at the swords. still I'm not 100% confident, but I'm not sure what to do to secure them better as I don't have room for a case at the moment. the wife is always home so at least they have constant supervision and two of the swords are hers.
I agree that access to swords should be limited to those who are respectful of them and the owner needs to have control over the access in order to support the responsibility associated with weapon ownership.

Some of my Fableblades are on my fireplace mantle in the liver room... when we have parties and guest over who will be drinking... I always relocate them somewhere where people will NOT be... just in case.

...I guess some people have to learn the hard way, hahaha! "Why is it if someone tells you there are a million stars in the sky, you believe them, yet if you see a sign that says 'Wet Paint', you have to touch it to be sure?"

This is after I commented that "This is the sharpest thing I've ever touched." I guess some people have to learn the hard way, hahaha! Thats the worst. When I show my sword to someone and let them hold it to examine it the first thing I tell them is 1) be-careful 2) Don't touch the blade 3) the sword is EXTREMELY sharp so don't touch the edge. This some how tends to them pawing all over the blade and "running" their finger on the edge just to see how sharp it is

Most people that come over show little or no interest in my swords. I kinda wish they would. They see my sword room and I can see their minds working "is this guy some kind of psycho?".

I am sorry to hear of your injury. I hope it heals quickly for you. All weapons at my home are locked in my vault unless they are on my person, sans a UC Narsil wallhanger I keep in the den. That's the one I want a thief to grab off the wall so I can put 15 rounds of 9mm Cor-Bon in his chest and be justified in doing so because he was armed. A simple vault is very easy to do. Just take a doorknob off an unused closet and put in a deadbolt. Then, you can upgrade later by putting in a safe, re-enforced walls/ceiling, etc. It is more than enough to keep kids or guests from messing with the swords and does not leave your weapons readily available for a thief to grab ahold of. It won't stop a determined thief with a crowbar - but it will delay them long enough for your alarm to kick off and perhaps get them caught in the act or make it to where they decided to take off to avoid being caught. Another good trick is to put a cheap Wal-Mart sheet metal gunsafe in the attic. They are light enough to move around, thin enough to get into the attic easily, and will bolt quickly to the roofing studs/A Frame. Yeah, getting something down is a little involved, however, you can keep the bulk majority of your swords/firearms hidden away - only leaving one or two out that you can get to easily.
