So, I'm looking over the pictures for the new Conan movie, and I see these: www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=27696&id=112956242054096I find the hilt design and the blade . . . well, lacking. Jody Samson's sword designs (ie. Conan's father's sword, the Atlantean, as well as Subotai's and Valeria's swords) from the first movie were very artistic and detailed, which I liked. This? I'll admit, I don't like it. Something about it just doesn't appeal to me. In the stories, Conan favored well-made, utilitarian blades. Perhaps this is what they were going for in the new movie? --Edward

Conan looks the role.
The sword? It's ok, but the guard is way too big and bulky.
Conan was never one for special swords. He pretty much used whatever was on hand.

Yeah the straight cross guard on the sword in the first pic is overdone. The sword over his head in the 3rd? pic with the curved guard and the fuller looks much better.
I was concerned on the casting of Jason M. as Conan but seeing these stills makes me think he'll pull it off.
Now if only they'd release Solomon Kane in the US!

The guard is really ugly... The guard, and the grip, and the pommel... looks like a toy. A bad toy.

Even the blade looks like a toy.
And I think Hollywood needs to stop doing remakes and reboots and sequels of sequels of sequels.

And I think Hollywood needs to stop doing remakes and reboots and sequels of sequels of sequels. With all respect to the first movie, it really wasn't REH's Conan. This one? It's starting to look like it might come closer. His stories are absolutely amazing, and it's a shame that a faithful version of them hasn't been done in film yet. In terms of the bigger picture, stories are retold over and over again anyways. It's really all the same story with a new plot device or gimmick. Inception? Con artist story with a dream gimmick, and a little tortured past for good measure. Go open up a bible to Genesis and read about Jacob tricking Esau out of his birthright. There's your basic story, now just add elements of other stories and there you have it. On a smaller scale, I don't think anyone was upset when they released The Dark Knight (sequel to a 3rd gen reboot, even without taking into account multiple animated series and movies). Right, the sword... lol, I kind of like it personally. Even if it's overbuilt it looks like it's got some heft, and that's what's important for a real barbarian.

What the f*ck is this? Is this supposed to be Conan? My sister is bigger than this guy. And what the f*ck does he have in his belt, a foam LARP boffer? Why are they trying to give him Underworld vampire eyes? I don't recall that in the novels. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE? IS THIS SOMEONE'S IDEA OF A JOKE? There can be no Conan remake. They will try to cash one out, they will ruin it, and in the end, they will only confirm that Arnold will remain the one and only Conan the Barbarian. Sure, he was not 100% accurate, but he took that role by the throat and bent it to his will - forever establishing himself as Conan.Crom laughs at your new Conan. He laughs from his mountain.

Even the blade looks like a toy. And I think Hollywood needs to stop doing remakes and reboots and sequels of sequels of sequels. What as opposed to the music industry ........ ...... like Tom Sizemore from Camerons Strange Day's said "End of the millenium, whats the point man nothing changes, its all been done, every fashions been done, every song, music, hair, bubblegum flavour ..... you name it ..... how we gonna make another thousand years" I happen to agree, history repeats itself but nearly everythings been done so we just pretty much rehash EVERYTHING these days. By all rights we are supposed to be living in a second renaissance now ........ but at times doesnt feel much like it. It all looks bad, agree with what the facebook people said the sword looks like a bad toy, but more to the point Conan was ala B.C period so more ancient weapon styles are needed in the vein of Egyption, Greek, Middle Eastern sorta stuff. I have to admit Jody Samsons stuff really hit the nails on the head. The new Conan guy, minus the terrible wardrobe doesnt look to bad a shift but Conan I think was a little stockier in the face, and the hair straight and black. Frankly I think Scorpion King with The Rock seemed more akin to a Conan remake then this (sometimes I like to think of it as a massively cheesy inspiration piece) Unless I am WOW'ed by the trailer for it I will avoid it like the plague. However it is one of those movies that put the right (big league) writer/director on it ..... could work.

Foam LARP says it all. I could deal with the blade and pommel but that hilt is nasty and overbuilt. The fellow who is supposed to be Conan isn't quite hitting the mark for me yet, but he may portray him really well, so I'll give him a fair chance. This is going to be a completely different Conan than what we have seen in the past, that's true. I'm sure that it will be an entertaining film, but in the end, to me, I think old Arnie will still bear the Conan crown.
I thought movie swords had made an overall improvement in the last 10 years, what with LOTR, Kingdom of heaven and Robin Hood, (Robins ugly sword excluded) but this is kind of a let down. That was half of what I was waiting for...the first pics of the new Conan sword.
Ah well, I'm sure it will still be a fun and enjoyable night out at the big screen.

Seeing as the "fake as hell looking sword" comments have already been said, I won't reiterate them, though I agree with them all. So instead I'll say, while it's impossible to replace Arnold, I thought Jason Momoa did a hell of a job as Ronan Dex in Stargate Atlantis, so I'll give him a shot, but they better change that damn sword.

I'm with Odin on this, Conan should be a fellow of epic stature.
He should look like he can KO a camel while shot in the ass on black lotus, and harrass some whores while he's doing it.
That guy wouldn't last a day on the tree of woe.

Oh dear this is all wrong, Conan should be huge, a monster of a man, capable of tearing you apart limb from limb. And that sword, what that all about!
It’s a fantasy film so I wouldn’t expect a real sword but it should have a feel of functionality, it should also have a flare to it, something that is going to remain an icon and a masterpiece for decades. In 30 years time I wonder how many people will be making replicas of this sword?

That depends on how many of the little brats... Er, future sword fans who see the new movie as a kid actually take the time to watch the older movie. Granted, if they do, they'll most likely decide the new one's better simply because it's new.

Looks very "Prince of Persia"-ish. Not Conan-y.

I was never a fan of Conan and that just assured what I was thinking. I mean the novel isn't bad, but I never thought the movies are REALLY good. But I have to say the swords of the first Conan movie were some artistic pieces. This just looks way off the hook.
