I've registered my opinion on the sword...Momoa may make a decent Conan. Remember, if you will, that Howard frequently referred to Conan as "pantherish" or "lithe", terms that do not - much as I enjoy the first film - apply in any way to Arnold. I'm willing to give it a chance.
That said, I actually believe that it will be so far removed from Howard's Conan as to be all but unrecognizable. Sigh.

I think Momoa will give a good performance. They do need to relook that sword though.

I never read any o the books, but I just knew Arnold was never meant to play the role. He may have popularized Conan, but the funny thing is without roids and an extreme workout routine, people just don't get that big. Conan would probably have looked much more like Mamoa. You can have two people with almost the exact same muscle tone, but one guy will be incredibly stronger simply due to the types of physical exercise he we through.

Good point, Ajustice. I like the first Conan movie but I don't know if it depicts the original Conan well. I became a Conan fan reading the comics as a kid and have read a couple of the books.
I was reading a comment a fellow made about the Conan the Barbarian movie on another forum that made me rethink my opinion of the movie. He basically put forth that the original Conan wouldn't have been so docile as to be a slave, he'd have killed his master and escaped. He certainly wouldn't have had to be driven off by that master as portrayed in the movie. He also pointed out that Conan wasn't as dumb as the movie made him out to be. For example going to meet Thulsa Doom without his sword which got him nailed to that tree. I agree the Conan I became an admirer of had good instincts and would never have been that foolish nor dominated in such a fashion.
Anyhow I still like the movie. A good adventure.

I heard an interview with the director of the first movie where he admitted the lead character was based more on Krull (another of Howard's creations) than Conan.
Having recently read several of the old Conan stories (never read anything of Krull) I can say that movie Conan bore very liitle resemblance to book Conan in either looks or personality. I would say that this new guy looks as much as Conan should as Arnold did in that neither is really right.
But then I think it near impossible to find someone 6'9", solid muscle (not necessarily huge), light and agile (as mentioned, like a panther), that has the charisma and acting ability needed to pull off the part. Arnold had the physique (or as close as a real human can get to it) and charisma (kinda) but lacked the height, grace and agilty. And his acting....in my opinion, could have been...better (to be polite). I don't know anything of this new guy other than these few pictures.
I don't think this new movie will be any good (especially if that LARP sword is any indication). And despite all it's faults the original is one of my favorite movies of all time. I wish they would leave it alone.

I think I know the man who made that. I will ask. He could offer a new story on the original swords and the new one.

Well just like any other custom sword commision, sometimes you got to make what they order. It looks like they were trying for a 1980's style with a a modern flair and it just didnt work for me at all.

Foam LARP boffer. That is me most accurate description of this sword possible. Throw in "tacky, gaudy, goofy-looking, ridiculous..." take your pick.

Whose idea was it, etc. After thinking about it, and having read a few of the Conan short stories, personally I'd be much more impressed with a Greek or Roman shortsword design, maybe something Viking. The sword I see in those pictures just doesn't cut it for me. --Edward

The more I look at the sword the more I feel that, though they could have done much better in the design process, the piece just may match the tone of the film, even if it does look like a boffer.
I would have personally liked to see another sword kind of like the Atlantean. Even if the sword does kinda suit the film, I don't think it will become as iconic as the Atlantean is.
I wonder what the weight and handling characteristics on a beast like that would be? I know the original was insane.

Yeah Rick, that one definitely captures the look and feel of various covers from the original Conan books. I thought that's what they should have gone for.
