Just think, if you'd had the laser, you could have set their clothes on fire anonymously... But this situation you shared comes down to the fact that you decided to let someone attack and damage your property and threaten you and your kids. Not law enforcement's fault you chose to be a semprini when the in-laws decided to assault you and your family. A semprini? Well, so much for intelligent conversation. Good job. I will explain something one time...so listen up. Choosing a higher road, in a situation where NO GOOD would have come from me getting out of the car and beating someone's ass...isn't being a 'semprini'. All that would have happened in that scenario is I WOULD HAVE GONE TO JAIL for attacking THEM (their word against mine remember?). Then, my family would have had to deal with ME being in jail. They would have had to deal with having NO WAY HOME from Tucson (the wife doesn't drive), or even a way to get away from her mother's house. Then I would have had to deal with having to go BACK TO COURT (in Tucson, 150 miles from my home) on assault charges once I FINALLY got out of jail. Yeah, I was being a 'semprini'. I now see the direction all of your previous comments have been coming from. Bravo for proving yourself the idiot, and by doing so...eliminating the validity of your arguments. I dealt with the situation on my own, later...when my kids WEREN'T around, and the consequences of my actions were my OWN to bear...no one elses. By the way, me having to do that really makes law enforcement pointless eh? Lets see...'Law Enforcement'. Definition? An agency designed to...what, enforce laws?? Hmm, was what her brothers did illegal? You bet your ass. Was there any enforcement going on? Nope...just a big fat waste of my time. Would I have had to provide the consequences to her brother's actions, if the police had done their job by enforcing the law? Most likely...no. I've got to say Taran, you've really shown the first true ignorance in this discussion by personally insulting me. Congratulations in advance on getting a great discussion locked. This thread was a testament to the level heads and intelligent people on this forum. Well, most of them I guess. Nice work man. Cris

This product is a joke; it's a gimmick that the company's marketing reps have played on with the media to get a viral marketing campaign going. 1w and higher power lasers are nothing new; they've been around for years. The only difference is now it's shaped like a light saber for the kiddies. For people that believe this product is really, really dangerous; link me to a video of someone frying someone's retinas at 100 yards, causing a plane to crash, or setting something on fire at a distance of further than a yard away. I am sorry, but a hand-held low-end commercial grade laser does not have the power, focus, or radiation output to do that. Something like that would cost millions of dollars...not $199.95 with free shipping. I'd be more afraid of a felon with a baseball bat or a terrorist with a sack of ammonium nitrate fertilizer.

Cris - it is unfortunate that for many situations the police don't seem to be able to or do not want to do much good. what might have happened if you told them upon arrival that the antagonists had a weapon? whether it was a laser pointer or a hammer I think the cops would have at least looked into it a bit more. I don't mean to play down the situation but it's not like they dragged you out of the car and beat you or your child and it seemed more like just intimidation, you could have driven away temporarily if it really got that bad. you also made it seem like (by your hypothetical scenario) that the laser pointer would have been as threatening as a real lightsaber. could a group of punks really keep someone in a car terrorized and at bay by wielding a laser pointer?? "don't move or I'll try to aim this precisely in your eyes, unless you close them!" "take that!" and I think you would have to be naked and tied up unable to move for them to be able to burn you with it, it's not Han's blaster pistol after all. I just don't see this as dangerous enough to warrant yet another forced restriction.

I just don't see this as dangerous enough to warrant yet another forced restriction. One of her brothers was behind the car the whole time. Without running them over (and believe me, he wouldn't have moved JUST so he could claim I ran him over) I couldn't have even moved to the street like they were screaming over and over lol. Much less simply 'driven away'...assuming I would leave my wife there. You have to realize, I edited down a LONG story to a few paragraphs for the sake of brevity. I think by now most of you have picked up on the fact that I'm pretty thorough, and think things through a pretty good ways before acting. If there were more I could have done, I would have. Also, I don't think you're realizing...there were damages to my car (scratches and scuffs, and a small dent), for one. The lady on the phone from the police told me not to leave, for two. And third...assuming this weapon CAN blind you as has been stated (instantaneously if I recall?), by the time I realized they were using it it would be too late. Anyone with reasonable hand/eye coordination can point a laser pointer into someones eyes in a face to face scenario without too much difficulty...in particular when you consider that I would be looking directly at it to see what the hell was in his hand...not expecting the possiblity of blindness as a consequence. I think part of the problem here is some of us are downplaying the danger, and some of us looking at it assuming it's truly a dangerous item. I am assuming it's dangerous, based on the claims made. Assuming it's not...well, in my opinion that's sort of short sighted (not meaning you Odin...meaning those making points in this discussion). Always better to err on the side of precaution, and be mistaken, then not take those precautions...and regret it for the rest of your life. We use a relatively high powered laser in my line of work for laying pipe with accurate slope. I don't know the class, nor the power...but I know it will lay 500' of pipe with dead on accuracy. If you look directly down the pipe into the laser eye, temporary blindness can, and has been the result (like staring at a bright bright light for too long...only with longer duration as the result). Doesn't take but a second or so either. If this laser is as powerful as they say...I can see blindness being a real possibility. Anyway, this discussion will likely be reduced to arguing those points (is it dangerous or not)...since we don't have any real facts about these 'toys'. If we did we could discuss with a bit more accuracy. Till someone gets ahold of one there's not much point in continuing it I think. Again though, much respect to everyone (excepting Taran of course...I still wonder why the hell he would just flat out insult me for no reason), for a lively...and very mature discussion. Cris

Yeah, someone spend $200 and review this for SBG. I want to see how it does on water bottles!

agreed on holding off further discussion until more facts can be brought to light. I enjoyed this very much and hope to have other equally sincere discussions with everyone (barring those who unfortunately couldn't keep it civil) and a late happy fathers day to all

From the late 70's, there has been a place where you could buy plans and kits for building lasers that could be used for cutting metal (CO2 laser), or hunting or sniping targets a mile away (Neodymium/YAG laser) plus things like pain fields, sonic knockout guns, particle beams, and lots of other coll and dangerous stuff:) They have a site on the Internet www.amazing.com I just checked it before this post, and got a 503 error, but I was on there not very many months ago, and they were still around, so maybe it is just a temporary server problem. My point being that since the late 70's, all of this advanced technology has been around to cause havoc (the laser in this thread is 1 watt, the CO2 lasers run 40 to 60 watts and are used commercially) and there has never been a single anecdote of someone being harmed by somebody using a laser, or a particle beam (Think beam of electricity)
