"I would KILL things...with FIRE."
Go outside, kid.
Though the writer of the article could apparently do with some exposure to the world of internet memes...and maybe they'd begin to ponder whether the statement was made as reference for humor rather than how mentally deranged the guy must be...but that wouldn't make much newsworthy.

Hell I'd buy one. Then again I'm not going to be pointing it at people, animals or vehicles. More so for the novelty of it. Of course, I could build a bluray laser that would ignite objects for a lot less money. It just wouldn't look like a lightsaber.

I wonder if it could be adapted to my M4 as a targeting laser...

I called and got some more info: The Spyder III Arctic Pro (the one linked to in the OP) is 228mm by 35.8mm. Or for those of us using an intelligent measurement standard: 9" by 1.4"
About the size of a lightsaber.
Unfortunately, at this time there is no flexibility in what body goes on the exterir of what laser. You can't get, say, the Pulsar Pro red laser in the Arctic Pro body style.

I'm not interested in one of those at all. Does that make me odd? Then again, it IS $200-300 that could go towards something else... like... a sword. Also, I don't think I need a flashlight/laser-pointer just to make scrambled eggs... or whatever the laser is supposed to do. And it really doesn't look that much like a lightsaber. The blade's not right. And... I bet it doesn't make sounds.
And if some stupid little kid points a laser like that at me while I'm driving, I WILL shoot him. With an imaginary gun. Or maybe I can "accidentally" run him over and claim blindness from said laser.
In all seriousness though, things like that probably shouldn't be made/sold. Seriously, what does one need a flashlight "so strong it can cook eggs and set fire to paper" for? I'd rather have a normal flashlight that lasts more than 5 minutes.

Saying something shouldn't be made because YOU don't have a use for it is really the pot calling the kettle black. I'm sure you've defended your position on owning SWORDS (which have no real requirement or use in modern society) to friends or family. There are more uses to this than setting fire to things. The surprising affordability is a huge benefit to someone with a lab in their basement. Not every step forward in science is done in a strict, well-funded government laboratory.

I'm sure you've defended your position on owning SWORDS (which have no real requirement or use in modern society) to friends or family. The difference is, someone I piss off on the freeway for driving like a sane person can't blind me ANONYMOUSLY with a sword. Thank you very much. They should at least have to be freaking licensed (which is what I think Dom was actually trying to say), with a background check. These things have the potential to totally alter someones life, irrevocably...in a split second. Would you like one of the jackasses that said they'd want one on that page to be in a room with one...and your child? I hope I don't sound pissed (I'm not at all), but comparing something like this to a sword makes absolutely zero sense. There is NO reason for the average person to own one of these, other than the novelty of what...being able to accidentally blind or burn a family member while showing it off to your buddy? Self defense? Uhh...pepper spray anyone? Gun and blade safety have been drilled into people for hundreds of years in the case of the former, and THOUSANDS of years in the case of the latter, and there's STILL accidents. Laser safety? Never heard of it. Maybe it's just me...but I simply don't see a point. Cris ~Edit - Maybe if I could use it to light my forge...
Kidding of course =p

Seriously, am I the only person who sees the irony? Someone could just as easily cause an accident with a dollar-store laser-pointer (which cost pennies, as appose to $200).
If traffic safety is your goal, what about rocks? Someone could open their window and hurl one through your windshield. People with destructive goals tend to have their way whether or not a more expensive version of destructiveness is available.
I can't deny that there should be SOME limitation to availability (which from what it looks like, are being put in place). Though the same can be said of a sword.
I know this website is sword-centric, but you can't honestly tell me that you trust people less with a blinding laser than a lethal length of steel.
"Would you like one of the jackasses that said they'd want one on that page to be in a room with one...and your child?" Would you want some random jackass to be in a room with a SWORD and your child?
I'm just saying, all these reasons you think a burning laser should be illegal or limited can easily be turned around by society to be used against the swords we hold so dear.
You can't go around collecting dangerous objects, then say "No, you shouldn't own THAT dangerous object." That's called being a hypocrite, no matter how you cut it.

For military purposes I can see the benefits, however for civilian use, no effing way in the slightest! It could be good for a survival situation, it can light fire in wet conditions, is relatively small and if need be can be used as a beacon if you get lost (just hope no planes are flying overhead). Seriously though, these things are a terrorist/idiots wet dream.
