Hi, I have access to many different tools (metal working, and wood working) and was curious if I could use a horizontal (woodworking) belt sander with a different belt put on, so that I could put a good non-secondary bevel on my swords (ie the heavy blades of DSA)? If so do I do it in short bursts and cool the blade in-between the bursts in water, then dry it off and start again for another burst? I have looked for wet belt sanders but didn't really want to put down the 500 bucks to purchase one... Thanks ahead of time, to anyone who can shed some light upon my query.

Yes, you can do this, as described, I have done this to many of my projects, and if you look at what people like stagmer are doing, they just have bigger beltsanders!!

Beltsander's actually one of the best ways to sharpen up a sword properly, but it's easier and safer with one that has a belt that runs vertically. Tom has some "SBG Famous" videos about his belt sander techniques that make blades stupefyingly sharp:

Yup you can sharpen a sword with a beltsander but the preferred type usually is a slack beltsander. With these the belt kind of "adjusts" itself to the shape of the blade because of the slack. With a regular beltsander you run more chance of sanding in "flat" places on convex blades.

thats a 1x30" ... or perhaps a 24" beltsander. I got mine at Lowes... Home Depot has em. If you dont plan on torturing one.... then you can pick up a cheapy at Harbor Freight or Northern Tool.
Mines a Delta.... has a 1x30 belt and a tabled disk sander on the side.
One of my most heavily used power tools.... theres so much you can do with those things.

I strongly reccomend the one from Harbor Freight. I have been useing the hell out of mine for some time now and it is still going strong. it's cheap, they'll deliver it to you and you can get some great belts for it from the web site I link to in the post that was linked above (or you can follow the link in my sig). I might caution against the belt sanders that are hand-held flat devices with no slack area for the belt. I have never used one of those and while I'm sure it could be done it is as yet unexplored territory and things might go terribly wrong or wonderfully right.

@ Tom K. I go through the ordering process on the Harbor Freight site, but when it comes to shipping I can only choose United States... When in reality I would prefer it come ALL the way to me in Canada... Have any other thoughts and I am all ears

This one looks an awful lot like the harbor freight one: www.grizzly.com/products/Belt-Sander-1-x-30-/H3140 maybe these guys ship to Canada. And while we are on the subject of slack belt sanders, if anybody knows about affordable 230volt or 400volt slack belt sanders available in the Netherlands or Europe then please let me know. Ow and I tried sharpening with a regular belt sander and well... It didn't work out for me, I'm sure it's possible with a lot of practice but I would not recommend it.

First rule of beltsanders is to just keep it moving at all times - dont stop for an instant. If you have to change directions lift it off at the change. Looooong flowing movements ;D
I sometimes use the roller to remove a bit of stock if the edge is still a bit thick after heat treatment, or if I have to reprofile and rebevel the tip due to sabering. I only ever use the flate plate to make the edge profiles straight. For bevels I only ever use the roller. A few more tips - 40 grit will rip it off faster and as you are getting results you will be able to move quicker, and minimise heat buildup. At the very tip, it will go blue in well under a second. You gotta move VERY fast and instantly in the bucket. No second chances. Files are much better for the tip.
However once the edge is under 1/32" (0.8mm) thick it's hand tools only in my opinion... may I direct you to this tute: /index.cgi?board=fable&action=display&thread=15310&page=1

I think they will ship to Canada but you have to call them. Marc Wiwingti I think got one from them so he knows the trick. I'll ask him and see what he says. @ Tom K. I'm thinking seriously about buying one for myself, it should make things much more easier. also, I could use it to even out the flats on my KC blade (or maybe it's a bad idea???)

it is a good idea,, only one thing i would suggest you, take the cheapest blade you got to practice yourself to be sure you do not ruine your blade.
but if you follow Tom K instructions,, it will be very easy.

Ya I found one in a local shop that goes for 97 brand name (just cant remember right off hand....) and its has an wheel sander on the side, which I can use for many other applications. It may cost a little more, but its supporting the local community. Looks like this. But THANK YOU EVERYONE for helping figure this out! I really appreciate it!
