I brought one of the 1 x 30" one's from Harbor Freight the other day. All I can say is why did I ever consider any other tool for sharpening. Once I finish practicing on a few scraps it's going to be a busy weekend!
Thanks everyone for the suggestions,
Rob

stromloswordsusa, post the results you get. it is really interesting, cause hat little tool looks very attractive for me (especially for the price) and I'm thinking about getting it.

Will do, it's hard to show the edges with photos. Will take some later.
Got a cheap unsharpened blade from the forum (Ben Griffith thanks!) a little while ago and used that to practise first. It's really easy to do, but I think getting and maintaining the right angle takes a bit of practise.
Moved on to a couple of my older swords and then a pair of darksword armoury blades today. I tried the Darksword out and was able to slice some 2L bottles nicely (although I sent one across the yard - just bad form on my part!). Would have taken me weeks to get them sharpened down by hand.
Am doing a little Darksword destruction testing tomorrow for some friends so I'll see how it goes there (will try get some video) and then re-sharpen.
The 1 x 30" was $49 at harbour freight - and I think it's a good deal - especially if you have a few blades.
Cheers, Rob

I strongly reccomend the one from Harbor Freight. I have been useing the hell out of mine for some time now and it is still going strong. it's cheap, they'll deliver it to you and you can get some great belts for it from the web site I link to in the post that was linked above (or you can follow the link in my sig). I might caution against the belt sanders that are hand-held flat devices with no slack area for the belt. I have never used one of those and while I'm sure it could be done it is as yet unexplored territory and things might go terribly wrong or wonderfully right. I'd been using a belt sander (hand held) clamped in a vise to break down the edges on my blades. They have no slack area. It takes something of a delicate hand though, as well as a bucket of cool water and a dry towel. Cris
