sure a bat can make a good OFFENSIVE weapon just not a very good DEFENSIVE one, agreed it is better than nothing but given the opportunity to chose my weapon a bat would be near the bottom of the list (and while we are at it SPAS 12 would be near the top)

I wont touch on very much thats been discussed here, but I suggest finding something that your comfortable using in the area you expect to use it in. There have been better suggestions than I could give already as to what that may be. Next consider where it will be, where you can keep it and where in relation to you it will be when you are most likely to need it. Out of reach for the kids may be out of reach for you when it really counts, which brings me to my last suggestion, get a dog. Get a big dog, get a loud dog and teach him to bark at anything that moves outside your house. If someone trys to break in at night and you arent aware, it wont matter a pair of dingos kidney what you have for defense. Just my .02.

Hey OP, for what it is worth, You could just buy a shotgun and never buy any ammo. The pump action sound is often more than enough to send them packing.
But if you have to use a sword, then any sword you are comfortable with is what I would suggest. Personal defense is just that, personal. You can't expect to defend your home from any attackers with a weapon you are unfamiliar with. Buy a rapier or a saber and be done with it. But that won't keep your kids from stabbing each other, or themselves, to death with it in any case.

You can thrust with a bat, and hit them in the elbow. ow That way it'd be good indoors.

You could also get a giant scary dog. My friend got a big dog, it alaways jumps on me, When I'm there we have to go to his room and close the door to keep it away.

right, because modern forensics cannot tell when a body has been dragged from the place it was killed.
if you have police willing to overlook evidence and not follow the laws in your town then I suggest you move.
oh and stop believing urban legend.
I'm just saying. . .

If I was a cop who was chasing an individual who was strongly suspected of several invasions and or rapes, I think that I would ignore the blood on the grass. Don't pretend it does not happen, and quit watching CSI. TV babies. that's funny, cause you live in Canada... I've family and friends there and have been there myself, so I know for sure that you can't own firearms... hell, you can't even own a friggin morning star...

Don't pretend it does not happen, and quit watching CSI. TV babies. I grew up the son of the state's prosecutor (or public defendant depending on which decade you wanna talk about) I knew about 75% of the local police force personally. they were all sort of secondary fathers to me. I've never watched a single episode of CSI. I'm a TV baby, you got me. thanks for reminding me of that.

I'm not saying you aren't. I don't know much at all about Canada. I just fear the place where the police are willing to overlook the fact that a corpse was moved from the place it got murdered. that is an urban legend and I'd like to see one bit of proof it has ever happened. The cops I knew would never overlook such a thing, no matter who's house it was being "robbed", even a member of the force wouldn't get away with that.

yeah well deciding who is right and wrong is supposed to be done properly by the system and all that honest above the board stuff.
if the cops start deciding who is right and wrong in cases involving dead people then we have problems. I'm sure it happened from time to time back in the old days but not so much anymore. it is just way too easy to get caught now.
so yeah it has its pros and cons but it is what it is.

Keep a pistol and a knife next to your bed. The pistol if you wake up and hear someone in your house, and the knife for if you wake up and someone is already in your bed room. Cold Steel makes fine knives, even their cheap kukri machete is formidable. Don't fall into the nonsense reality that a weapon has to be expensive to work. A steak knife will kill someone as sure as an Albion.

weird as it sounds the cutting in baltimre was dismissed (best of my knowlege) because he didnt just chop the dude. he told the perp stay put while i call police. the perp coulda stayed put, or fled, but decided instead to attack. you see the difference in this scenario as to where it becomes defense. problem is i believe if it hada been a pistol, instead of sword, it would not make the national news. the big scary blade thing freaked out every body.
any time you think defense and whant to be around later you need to think consequence. jail or death... either way, you wont be around to protect your family next time. when you think defense... keep it as defense. if you pull a weapon... of any type.... be prepared to have to use it... and be prepared to face consequence.
this can even play an important role in hand to hand combat. if an invader broke in your house and you broke his neck with a chin twist, as such, you still have to face consequence. the less premeditation, the easier consequence.
actually, i think the OP probably has thought this out, and is wanting a sword for said purpose. but being such a person that i am, a defese instructor, i cannot advise on a weapon without advising on consequence. we can beat a dead horse... as in may such thread... but this is why i brought such a thing up.
a shorter sword for indoors is a must. a jin-shi jian as i have, wiht 27" blade is fine in cut and thrust. or a good wakizashi. there have been a couple of good euro recommendations.
as for drag perp inside... poppycock... you say pre CSI... good... but havent you ever seen a rerun of columbo.... dont debate semantics. just embrace ethics... to take another persons life is to loose a part of yourself. that is consequence in extreme. sure i have a sword for cutting fun... and swordsmanship... and am not afraid to have it as protection, and would not hesitate should the time necessitate.... but training and ethics dictate to know when it is necessary for deadly force to be authorized. if you do not understand that prart, then you have no realization of it and should not be allowed a weapon. unless you are living in an anarchist state.

We can own plenty of firearms. We can get a licence for restricted weapons. .223 assault rifles, handguns etc. You can even get a permit to carry concealed provided you have survived three attempts on your life. (That is funny). We are getting rid of of our registry since we realize that we wasted 2 billion. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police even refuses to prosecute the registry BS for long guns, since they know it is BS and everybody has at least a couple of shotguns and rifles in store. Do not kid yourself, we are the most armed country on the planet. Just because you do not know it, does not make it real. that's funny, cause when I'm afraid someone's gonna pull a gun on me (being Albanian), the Canadians are not the first that come to mind... aanyway, as a student of law, I am solid that there IS more than one way to see if a body has been moved from its initial position and there has always been... mainly because the easiest way is looking for a big pool of blood with no body over it, or a large stain of blood (in the dead person) with no big pool of blood under it... I don't watch CSI either btw, but I do dig the lumberjack song with the "Royal Canadian Mounted Police"... I'm sorry, but the use for the knife just cracked me up...

Mates a cop, he says that in Australia anything you do will likely be misconstrued so its best to lie down and get raped like an old woman (If anyones read Voltaire's Candide you'll be laughing your ass off now) .... ahem.
He says:
1) Have a long 800mm long x 30mm hardwood dowel. Thats a curtain rod, thats your wep 2)Buy a medieval shield, one thats a little bit pretty, thats to block the assailant from you and you family. When asked its decoration for a fantasy look. 3) Face Shield from the hardware store, its to protect your face. Its from your garage 4) Charged Headlamp (either glued to brow of faceshield or independant whatever comfortable).
If your house isnt alarmed at every door, rig a womans pull pin personal purse alarm to every door frame, a little hook on the door, fishing line looped on hook (30cm long so can be armed at bed or going out), when the doors opened it pulls the pin and the high pitch alarm goes off (think door/grenade trap but with alarm).
The assailant might not flee (good if they do), but it should wake the house immediately, assailant knows this, if they commit you hopefully should be outta bed, putting the clean face shield on, lamp on so you can see, picking up barrier shield and hardwood stick while your wife is on the phone or mobile to 000 (911 yanks). Kids are to be outta bed and under beds for cover.
Go out and check, if assailant is so silly to go hostile against you've got some circumstancial grounds for your defenses and weapon. If you make contact smack the stick against the shield rim yelling lots, lotsa fuss and commotion. The idea is the scare them off while cops come, face shield and held shield should stop you getting cut or blunted easilly. The hardwood dowel should hurt heaps if slapped or jabbed into their teeth and face.
Yes its cumbersome, not ideal, but you might have luck in keeping your body safe furthur along the escalation, passing things off as "circumstantial, not premeditated", blocking the assailant from your family.

I have not read this whole thread as...well...I don't like these kinds of discussions. I'm breaking one of my own rules. Please forgive me if what I say has already been said.
In my opinion, the best home defense lies in the home rather than a weapon. "Defensible Space", as it has been called. Take the necessary precautions to make sure your home can be secured properly. Alarm systems, good locks, safe windows. Take the time to talk with your neighbors and discuss community action should a suspicious scenario occur. Think about what rooms are the safest in the house, think about which are the highest risk, think about entry points and things that can be done to make them more difficult to access. Plan accordingly, once you know what you are dealing with.
If the climate permits, plant some rose bushes outside of the windows. Who would want to wade through thorns when they can move along to an easier target? Get a small video camera. Flash photography can sometimes put an assailant into angry attacks from being caught and identified. The lamp on video cameras can be mistaken for a flashlight, and images can be an invaluable tool in investigations. Think of tables and desks as shields! Think of shields as shields! Defense is about defending! Get a dog! I wouldn't break into a house with a dog, would you? Keep emergency services on speed dial. Call them as soon as you realize there is something wrong. Have a bright flashlight or headlamp handy. Light can make a handy weapon and can tip things in your favor should a confrontation occur.
If it comes down to violent force, definitely defend yourself. Make lots of noise, don't worry about shouting for help whether or not you expect it. Do whatever you can to make the situation as uncomfortable as possible for the intruder.
While a firearm is a better tool for home defense, other weapons work well, too. Bats/clubs/sticks, fire extinguishers, defensive sprays, tazers. I would much rather use a "non-lethal" weapon as it is easier to remain on the defending side of the law. It's a fine line between using a home defense weapon and committing premeditated manslaughter.

I am fully with Hyou on this
The fact that you are looking for a weapon means that you are scared. Note this is not a bad thing, just means something triggered a reflex of fear in side of you that you wish to address.
Weapons are only helpfull if the semprini has already hit the fan and even then: YOU CAN LOOSE. No matter how skilled or fast, every fight includes the possibiltiy to loose and since we talk over deadly force loosing might include dying.
This might make a good topic to discuss with your wife or family. What to do in a situation and what consequences might be.
With that beeing said, just as Hyou suggested, invest into defensive options. Plants, better locks. Light, Video cameras (even cheap fakes with a led light). Speak with neighbours, look out for each other.
For some basic ideas you can check out Tom Browns "City Survival Guide" (think that was the title) for some comperatively cheap ideas.
Think ahead of time when to fight and where to fight. Maybe the sleeping quarters are in the upper floor, then a possible place might be the stair way. That would also mean, not going down, but calling the police and defending a strategically advanterous position.
For a quick read you can check out "Meditiations on Violence" wich might give you added material for thought.
To put it in a nutshell : Safety and Security are an attitude and based on long term preperations, and not achieved with the purchase of a single implement no matter how deadly it might be.

Ah Ha, I picked the right forum obviously! Thanks for all the info and advice. Plus some nice sword suggestions! Mostly out of my price range though which I forgot to mention. Having read the suggestions and advice I'm thinking of maybe going for a range of options. The one's I liked were: Baseball bat. Stun Gun. Empty shotgun pumped for effect - nice idea! Shield. Plus maybe the sabre, just in case as a last resort. I don't have to use it. I'm not sure on the law here as regards self defence but I think it's along the lines of being an appropriate response. I should try to find out as you pointed out. I'm not too keen on the idea of a shorter weapon like the gurkhar blades. Too up close, I'm used to dancing about at as great a distance as I can manage, I'm very fast and accurate but not particularly brave

As was suggested above you are seeking this advice because of fear. Fear is about not being prepared. Get prepared. Some of the things not on your list of preparedness. Family drills for all emergency situations, home defense included, check your local laws especially about deadly/ appropriate force, Practice with what ever you have chosen. A parting word would be to have it in your hand when you need it, also you are trained in a response use your training.
