also forgot to mention... my local police dept knows i have swords, and martial arts skills. they also know that i am willing to use them for home invasion prevention. what they require is a phone call before hand. Care to clarify that? Are you saying that your local law enforcement agency has been briefed on your sword skills. Are you James Bond or something? And the required to call before hand.....what exactly does that entail? If someone breaks into your house you have to call the police and let them know you are about to use your skill? Something here doesnt wash for me. I think its probably far less complicated than you are making it out to be. If you are skilled with sword, then I would suggest getting one of roughly the same dimensions made from a good hard wood. If in fact your "skills" are on record somewhere with the LEO then using a steel bladed weapon is just asking for trouble, and thus, unrealistic.

LOL, I bet you weren't expecting this can of worms eh, Valentinesmith?
I have a CS cutlass I like well enough. It's make a better indoor weapon I would think being of more compact length. Then again I don't have your weapons training and your place may have more room for longer sword use. I think the CS saber types are solid enough from what I hear.
I have several gladius type weapons scattered about that I would use to dispatch an intruder if the need arose. I'll sort out the legalities later.
That ole boy in Baltimore didn't have much legal trouble from what I hear.

People have addressed this pretty well already, so most of what I have to say is just an echo. First choice: Home defense laws are sketchy and tilted toward non-premeditation, so baseball bat. More specifically a T-ball bat; handier and shorter indoors. Second choice:: Again, claiming opportunity rather than premeditation, something like a machete. The less exotic the better. (In Conceal Carry class they told us to go with standard HP ammo rather than anything exotic for the same reason. It's not necessarily the criminal charge you're worried about, but if you kill someone, even in CLEAR self-defense in your own home after retreating as far as you can go, the surviving family of the worst felon in the world often can find a lawyer to bankrupt you going after you in civil court. Still better than being dead! But worth having a sober view of what the real threat is in a self-defense sitaution and not letting pride take over.) Third choice: A short and handy sword like a long dirk, gladius, cutlass, "ninjato" (see, they are good for something ) smallsword, etc. Fourth choice: Anything you're well-trained enough to halfsword. (For some people this can include something like a saber, especially free hand bracing the back, unsharpened edge.) Surprisingly long blades--used *right*--work quite well. Same for something like a short spear. So, in other words, a lot of choices. Just think out what you're comfortable with.

Doesn't matter if he asked the question or what his profile states quite frankly. He says that he is a noob then comments on his many years of fencing but the thing about fencing is that it is a sport great for entertainment and exercise but not really viable in a home defense situation. Also the fact that he states he is a noob makes me inclined to cover all bases, both liability for our advice and liability if he ever has to defend himself. Who are you to presume that we shouldn't do our utmost to protect him and his family even if that protection comes in the form of protecting him from his own possible ignorance. No offense to OP but when someone comes onto this forum and says "I am looking for a sword for home defense" automatic warning bells go off because this is a very dangerous subject both in terms of possible litigation and also the dim view that most countries take to this kind of thing. His question wasn't as specific as you seem to believe.
OP: I know you have good intentions but believe it or not we do care for your well being even though we are random internet people, we also care about how people and the wider non-sword public views our hobby and the weapons themselves. Defending yourself with a sword in home defense is complicated and dangerous. If you are set on a blade for defense, something long enough to keep an intruder at bay but short enough to use in a confined area. As to the not wanting a blunt weapon, why not? You do realise how much damage they can do, right? Also if you ever do wind up in court a blunt weapon will look better than a sharp one. Also you don't need a blade to deter an attacker especially with the speed and skill you would have having been fencing for so long. A simple hanbo or better a walking stick. Walking sticks are great because you can use the "I had it lying around defense" and you are not likely to kill someone with it, also no blood to clean out of the carpet, off the walls, off your property. A swift lunge to the solar plexus would knock the wind out of an opponent allowing you to subdue them.

Greetings! And Welcome to our little corner of the internet. This is the one you were talking about right? www.coldsteel.com/army-officers-saber.htmlI've only dealt with cold steel when it came to their machete's, and I don't have a problem with tho's. But some of the other members have had some issues with other cold steel products. Also, it would help if you had a price range you were looking for. It's a shame that you aren't going to be putting the sword out as a display piece, but I can see why you wouldn't want to do that with kids around. BUT be sure that when you get the sword, to sit down with your kids and explain what the sword is and what it can do to a body. If you try and hide it away, well... if I were a kid and found a sword that my dad didn't tell me about, I'd probably be typing with one hand right now. So are you looking for something that will lay flat, or do you care if it has a wide guard? Also, were you looking for a straight blade, or a saber with only a slight bend?

LEGAL DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed by the members of this forum are solely those of the commenting forum members.
I guess that is the only part that really matters in discussions here and the rest of this kind of just guidelines. The Sword Buyers Guide (SBG) does not necessarily support the statements made by forum members, and administrators reserve the right to edit or delete offensive or offending statements.
That makes sense, not accepting any responsibility for what folk post here but also taking some things into consideration.
Staff of the SBG are committed to responsible sword ownership and use, and under no circumstances condone the use of a sword on another living being or any unsafe practices with live blades.
Toss that phrase and everyone can go on about the business of promoting sword ownership for defense and offense. From what I read on the board these actions/discussions are accepted quite frequently
The destructive tests shown on the SBG main page are done under controlled conditions and should never be replicated.
Cool
The SBG is not responsible for any illegal use, unsafe practice, or use causing bodily harm performed by forum members or guests involving swords.
Yes, any individual should be responsible.

I dunno that whole bit about using a sword on another human being, maybe it should say something more like does not condone the use of the blade part of the sword on another human being

a bat is not a very effective weapon for defense it requires you to leave your self open in order to use it, that is if you have room for a swing, if you merely point it a someone they can simply grab it from you, a sharp blade with a good point of sufficient length wielded by someone who knows what they are doing can keep an intruder at bay until the authorities arrive as effectively as a firearm

I'm not even going to touch the legal issues so I'm going to try to suggest what sword might work for what the OP is asking for and I'll let the arguements on the legality and effectiveness of swords as home defense weapons stand as they are. in a house you will want something short so as not to get tangled on the walls. you will also want to cut and/or thrust since a cut is more likely to be debilitating (in my opinion) my first reccomendation would be the ATrim 1557. it is fast and agile but still cuts very well while still having a really pointy point. the down side is it doesn't come with a scabbard so you'd have to get one made and it isn't exactly a budget sword (especially when you figure costs of having a scabbard made though you can get a basic one for $100 from Christian Fletcher) the guard shape of the one in my review is the standard guard now, not the one shown on the web site (mine has additional etching on it that is not standard though) review: /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=13529 link to source of supply: www.christianfletcher.com/Christian_Fletcher/AT-1557_Type_XVIII.htmlanother option that looks to fit the bill (though I have no experience with it) is this one: www.wiwingtiswordsupply.com/SH2288.htmlit too is a bit pricy and I have never seen a review so I don't know how well it is made. the company that makes it has quality all over the place ranging from just about the best to just about the worst and non-katana made by these guys are much more likely to be poor quality so yeah this one is a toss of the dice as far as I know. the Cold Steel small sword doesn't cut much but it is good for tight quarters and you could give them a good beating with the blade if you didn't want to poke them to death. so it might be a good lethal/non-lethal option. here's a review: www.sword-buyers-guide.com/small-sword.html (just don't buy it from Cold Steel's web page) the Valiant Armoury Bristol signature sword could work out well too for all the same reasons as the 1557. it also has a lot of the same draw-backs: cost, what a shame to relegate such a nice sword to under the bed defense only. review: /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=10227&page=1#165144 since the OP is a fencer maybe a rapier: www.sword-buyers-guide.com/swept-hilt-rapier.htmlthere's a lot more swords out there and a lot of reviews here's the place to go to find reviews done here: /index.cgi?board=reviews&action=display&thread=10166 I hope this helps.

Several years ago John Lundemo of www.odinblades.com made an almost perfect sword for you. The guy who commissioned it was even a fencer! I've loved this sword from the first time I saw it.

A sword is a bad choice for self-defense. Moreso if you are concerned about you children. They'll accidently injure or kill each other with a sword just as quickly as they would with a firearm.
I'd go with a combination of stun guns, OC sprays, and good, solid bludgeons stratigically located around my house.

I have to say I agree with Odingaard on this one. He took the words right out of my mouth. Tazer and spray would be my first choice.
In my town you are aloud to use as much force as necessary to get the intruders to leave your home. No unnecessary force. In most situations they would likely call using a sword excessive force which would result in never being aloud to own a sword again. I used to deliver my Police stations internal mail from our City Hall everyday so this is from the mouth of the horse.
But if a sword was my only option I would choose a Roman short sword. It takes the least amount of room to use and excels in close quarter combat.

I get tired of hearing the old "the baseball bat is the ultimate home defense weapon, you can even stop incoming missles with one of those!" crap a baseball bat is not much good as anything but a last ditch weapon. Sorry, I disagree heartily--and that's as someone who's been in the situation of having to use a bat to defend on three serious occasions. Bottom line is a bat is a hell of a better option than weaponless. In particular if it's not being thought of AS a "baseball bat." Indeed that kind of swing has its vulnerabilities and is especially hard to use indoors. (Though another reason I suggested a T-ball bat instead.) A grip with one hand choked up changes things quite a bit though. Far more so to think of a bat as similar to a weighted stick or baton; practice the basics from, say, Gene LeBell's book on fighting with a stick and no, your options are not simply to point the end or have it taken away from you.
