...If only I could fight As I've said before, there is no way to get into a safe combat situation than in SCA melees. I'm not really a big fan of one and one fighting in the sca (I think I'd prefer to use steel blunts) but the melees are to die for! Keep clicking some of the links on the side, you'll get an endless wave of some great combat. Hundreds of SCAers around the country fighting in a gigantic battle is enough to give you chills. And it's so easy to participate in too! You don't need to be a master swordsman or an exalted maestro of german longsword to have fun. And when it comes down to it, the entire point of these melees is fun! I can't wait till I turn 18 and join the sca. I hope that whatever college I go to, it will be near an SCA organization. Colby College in Maine has it's own mock sca activities, so that should be pretty interesting

Well, keep in mind that it's supposed to be real combat. (hypothetically) Risking your neck for the sake of fun isn't good fighting, although it is quite entertaining ;D! As I said before, in order to recreate real combat, you need to devote yourself to the idea that you are in a life or death situation. I'm not sure if I said this already but...Even when I play viedo games (star wars battle front in particular) people come up to me and ask me why my kill count is like...1 to 80. For most people it's around 1 to 5. That means for every time I die, I kill 80 people whereas someone else might get 1 death per every 5 people. They may have more fun, but, had this been real, I have more of a chance for survival than they do. Well that and...I'm a cheapo sniper

Was that crazed and maniacal laughter of the variety of the mentally disturbed I heard during the charge in that last battle?
...that's kinda creepy...

Adam....ummm...yeah.... that might have been me.... Rammstien, I agree with you that in order to really make combat simulation work, you really have to dedicate yourself to the idea that staying alive is more important then hitting the other person. This is kind of hardwired into people brains at practice in singles combat. In general people have been training in singles combat for some time before they start doing melee's. Melee's are only done on a large scale at major events. These events usually involve some travel and only serious people go through the trouble to get there. Yes, there are a handful of newbies there too, but they are few and they get eliminated fairy quickly. The battles are dominated and decided by people fighting in some coordinated manor and trying to stay alive in order to kill more enemies. I forgot to mention that there is an authorization process. You don't have to be a member of the SCA to get authorized but you do have to get authorized in each weapons form you want to fight in at a competitive event. This does not include demo's. You get authorized at the practices by two marshals who watch you fight and make sure your armor and weapon is safe, that you are safe in that you know the rules, and that you can throw some basic shots and defend yourself. It is not meant to determine that you are good, but that you know what you are doing and are not a danger to other people. You are can attend practices without being authorized. The goal there should be to train in order to get authorized. As far as the idea of fighting in an unrealistic manor when you life is not in danger... pain is a great teacher. I know Florida has a light calibration, but here in the Northeast, we have one of the highest hit calibrations in the SCA. People generally go easy on beginners, but if they see that you are not getting the idea that you have to defend yourself first, they will give you some shots that you will feel right through your armor. They will even target those areas that don't have armor. No beginner fighter will be able to land any shots on an SCA Knight unless he allows them for the sake of training. So in general beginners realize that they have to stay alive first if they are to have a chance to get a shot off. Melee's is the one instance where a beginner might be more successful because he is working as part of a group. The beginner has to really be working as part of that group serving his function in the line defense. BTW, even though I have been fighting for some time now and am authorized, I still consider myself a beginner compared to some of the knights I fight with 10 to 30 years experience. Picture that a 60 year old man in armor, kicking my $emprini. Thats that happens, experience really is everything.

We had an awesome melee practice last night. It was a 3 on 3 set up with both sides having one shieldman, a glaive and a greatsword. I was the shieldman on my side. The highlight was one match were I sent my two men straight in with points forward. They were point to point with the other side and started to retreat drawing them in. I was facing the other shieldman. I did this maneuver where I pushed straight into the other sheildman in front of me forcing him back. I then flanked left, swiping both the opposing polearm and greatsword with my shield in one move. My mates came in with their points and killed both guys. The 3 of us then went after the lone shieldman.
