Gents (and ladies):
Are you a fox, or a hedgehog? I speak, of course, of the famous old dictum that the fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing. In relating this to swords, I have to twist it a little. Here I'll just say that the fox likes many swords, but the hedgehog likes to know everything about a certain type of sword.
A fox---like me, and it's the first time I've ever used "fox" to describe myself---may have the basic Oakeshott typology roughly understood, that types X-XV are mostly cutters, and then the XVI-XX are mostly pokers, but sometimes the fox stumbles when asked point blank to typify a blade per Oakshott. The fox may have a dao and a rapier and a cinqueda in his collection, and be enthusiastic about all of 'em.
The hedgehog, on the other hand, probably concentrates his energies, passions and attentions on ONE TYPE of blade. Maybe the katana (yes I know they're not all the same, just work with me here), maybe a medieval arming sword, maybe a Type XVIII.
So, which are you?
And, yes, no one (or very few people) is going to be 100 percent fox, and no one (or very few people) is going to be 100 percent hedgehog, it's a spectrum, people fall somewhere between the two extremes, but you know what I'm asking here.

now that is a tough question, I would have to say more hedgehog than fox, perhaps 60/40, or so, as my interest is mainly in european double edged, single hand swords, these are the ones I want to own many examples of, the only exceptions would be rapiers and sabers, but I am happy to have one or two examples no real need for more than that, and have no real interest in falcions, bastard swords, katanas, or ant type of fantasy sword

Psh.
I think I'll choose "dog," and substitute bludgeons for swords. That describes my world better, my way is much simpler.

Well, my area of knowledge is more hedgehog like, because I know far more about katana than other bladed weapons, but my area of interest is more fox like, because I want two of each type of bladed weapon ever made: the antique for study, and it's modern counterpart that I can use. Yeah, I'm weird. And I set my goals pretty high. ;D

I could be described as a fox. Or how do they say that in Spanish? "El Zorro." Yea, that works.

how funny that Zorro would be a hedgehog.
as for me I am a hedgehog. A hedgehog with a rapidly shifting multiple personality disorder. I focus hard on one thing then abruptly shift to another thing, then to another and another, eventually I may return to something I've been on before but that can take a long time, or five minutes; never can tell.
in the end I love all swords, if I act unimpressed I'm just stuck on something else at the moment.
and this is how I am with pretty much everything in life.

Sort of a fox with caveats here... not much interest in long one-handers that are thicker than a rapier. Everything else I like, but know little about.
