Hello all, What is your favorite sword fighting scene from movies or books? Two choices:
In the past I have posted the Conan (with sabre) fight scene from a book, which I think is an awesome written scene. But one of my favorite scenes from the silver screen is from the movie "Rob Roy" when Rob Roy (Lium Neasan) fought that duel with that English creep who had raped his wife. Great fight!
Another is when Jason (Original "Jason and the Argonauts") had to fight those skeletons that came up out of the ground from the Hydra's teeth. I thought that was an awesome scene for a 1960s movie. And believe it or not some of those skeletons had some good moves. And that scene showed a couple of good examples of using a shield as a weapon.
Anybody know of any scenes involving cav sabres, Shamshirs, Tulwars, and the like? I would love to hear about them. Later, Freebooter

Ardeth Bay fighting Ochnar - mummy returns, I like it because it features a yatagan.
aragorn at the end of the first lord of the rings, when he fights an army of orcs and lurtz - his moves were very believeable.
Jet Li fighting Michelle Yeoh - mummy 3
crouching tiger hidden dragon - the fight between the two women using a staggering variety of weapons
I'm sure there are others that I can't think of right now

Wesley versus Indigo in the Princess Bride. Not sure about the moves, as I'm not into rapier fencing, but it looks awesome, and the banter, including using actual sources, just makes it better.

Blade vs. Deacon Frost, from the first Blade movie. Sure you could probably be an armchair Musashi and critique their moves to pieces, but damn, they look fierce!

The first thing that popped into my head was the movie Tristan and Isolde www.imdb.com/title/tt0375154/If there are ANY of you who haven't seen it, it is a must to own. GREAT manly stuff for the guys, and a dainty love story for the girls. It's the perfect date movie. Anyway, I can't decide between the fight in the woods when (something) happens, or the fight in the ring where (something) else happens. Edit: Here's the fight scene in the woods. I love this one because of the sheer number of weapons he goes through out of necessity. And here's the "ring" fight, which I LOVE the backhand. (watch for it around 0:50) The second one is kinda like a mix between the two. A lot of stuff cut out, but there ya have it.

Man, I love Jackie Chan. And I want the sword he has in that last clip. Good stuff so far. I wouldn't have expected prissy lame "Tristan and Isolde" to have some decent fights . ;D But I gotta say, for number one, I'm with nschiff, this is the first sword-fight I'd ever seen, and I firmly believe it has profoundly affected my life. I don't give a damn how realistic it is, it's one of the fondest memories I have of any movie experience, ever. Still makes me smile: Love this one, too. Gives me goosebumps. Rob Roy's been mentioned, can't argue there. I agree 100% with everything in bloodwraith's first post. Looking back, I know this is silly, but I loved the hell out of this Errol Flynn/Basil Rathbone fight in "The Adventures of Robin Hood" when I was a kid: The fight between friends in "The Count of Monte Cristo" (2002) was good. Brutal, sad, and touching. (3:00 minutes in) I recall the one at the end was good, too, can't find it at the moment. I don't like the final fight in "Blade," but I love the fangs off of the opening scene. Not so much a "sword fight" as a "one-man-wrecking crew who happens to have a sword." Awesome. Gotta give a shout out to the first (and only good) "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie. The only film I can directly credit with getting me laid. Hat's off to you, Captain Jack: As crap as the "Star Wars" prequels were, (and believe me, they were crap) they did give us this gem. If only the whole trilogy was this badass: Gladiator. 'Nuff said. (turn of the sound and play some music that's actually good, though) Love pretty much everything from "Kill Bill." It's absurd. This one's nice because it's smaller and quieter than most of the other stuff, and more effective. The knife fight at the beginning of Volume 2 is a close second, though. Hero. All the fights are crazy good in this one, but this is my favorite: Ah, "Troy." If you can manage to ignore the god-awful delivery and accents of the first minute-and-20 seconds, this is stone-cold awesome: And....that's enough from me. For now. ;D

The Duellists has some excellent, realistic dueling scenes. The first one, with smallswords, lasts all of about three seconds! There's another with sabers, on foot, that ends with the two protagonists so exhausted they collapse on each other and have to be dragged apart by their seconds. Another with sabers is on horseback.
The Three Musketeers and the Four Musketeers, 1973 & 1975, have too many classic sword fights to mention. There's the one on the ice, with them all sliding around and breaking through, there's the one where Porthos duels a thug armed with case of rapier, the great night duel with the hooded lanterns..... etc, etc.
Then there's the one in Fearless, where Jet Li takes on a sabreur with jian. Actually, any film where Jet Li uses a sword is awesome!
Cheers

I forgot my favourite movie, any of the fight scenes from Brotherhood of the Wolf, if you have not seen this movie it is really amazing and the fighting is very straightforward with little of the flash you see in hollywood, also the whole mood of the movie is so dark and gritty.

I am with BW on the Michelle Yeoh vs Zhang Ziyi.
although the Will Turner vs Capt Jack was cool, too.

I would have to say Archibald Cunningham being cleaved in half by a basket hilt Scottish broadsword. This is the final dual from Rob Roy.

I defenitly agree with the final fight scene in Rob Roy. Another of my favs even though it doesn't involve swords is the final fight scene between Benico Del Toro and Tommy Lee Jones at the end of The Hunted. Its one of the better knife fights I've seen.

This movie was really good, though the knife was a strange animal indeed, not what I would think of when it comes to a killing knife. Then again if you have the training you can kill someone with a plastic eating knife. The sheer brutality and realism of this fighting style was amazing at 5:45 where benice drives the blade through tommy's muscle cluster is a classic disabling attack. I believe that the fighting style used in this film is sayoc kali, very brutal and effective.

Indeed, that duel from Seven Samurai is really something!
Already mentioned, from The Duellists:
"a slight cut"!!!
I know I already posted it somewhere else, in a similar thread, but for those who wouldn't have seen it already (or would want to see it again):
p.s.: I don't have sound at work...I hope the sound is ok in the posted videos, if not, I'm sorry.
