I still say that the best defense is group travel, preferably away from areas of concentration. It's one thing to have a weapon, it's another to have the mind set to use it when your life is on the line.

Ricwilly for the WIN! lol... Odingaard- when did you get your former OSS? I ask just because I've heard good things about it, and CS does seem to improve their models over time... I don't know, but I was very surprised to hear your experiences with them. Thanks, Slayer Probably 2007ish. But, this product line has not really changed since its onset, its their entry-level budget line - stainless steel blades set into kraton polymer handles (in the picture below, you can see that the guard and subhilt are plastic...ish). Alot of the awesome stuff you hear about these base model knives are planted by Cold Steel marketing reps/distributors; even the YouTube videos and such. Of course these are only going advertise and show how phenominal it is, that is how they get your money. For $30; I'd much rather have a Cold Steel machete or spade in the same price range as a primary survival tool that could serve in a secondary role as a weapon (if I could not have my Woodsman's Pal). But to each their own... Thanks for the input... I'm not doubting you at all, I was just curious. I think that I'll probably still get one eventually, if only to satisfy my curiousity, but I'll definitely keep what you said in mind. Thanks! ;D -Slayer

The airhorn sounds like an ideal thing, that and a can of pepperspray, good for human rapists too I guess .........
Everything in this country that can kill you can be stomped on really, or just avoided with a little jog away. By that our snakes and spiders dont need anything worse then a whack of a thong. Although I had a mouse spider that ran out from under my friends hot water system, fangs like large fish hooks and its breadth was about a baseball, I still get left cold remembering getting a bucket and cardboard all of us trying to get it outside, it was then killed with a shovel.

Any sort of extremely high pitched sound emitting device that will inflict pain but no long term damage. Bris: Not sure how much experience you've had with our snakes mate, a king brown ain't dying to no thong, nor are a number of other snakes I can name . Now it might be more accurate to say that there isn't anything over here a good whack with a shovel won't kill

My suggestions (I own these, so I know how they handle) 1. WWI 1918 Trench Knife www.trueswords.com/1918-trench-knife-p-2846.htmlKnuckle guard gives extra hand protection, allows bashing and punching, plus skull crushing pommel, battle tested design 2. Gil Hibben Centurion www.swordsdirect.com/hibben-centurion-knife.htmlNice hand guards, double edged, skull crusher pommel, this thing just says "Bring It On" 3. Sword Umbrella www.trueswords.com/sword-cane-covert-umbrella-sword-cane-sword-p-4534.htmlIf an umbrella is good, this is even better. Unfortunately the web site says no ship to Canada or commie-run states of the U.S. 4. Skull & Bones Gauntlet Style Hand Claws www.trueswords.com/skull-bones-gauntlet-style-hand-claws-p-4111.htmlor The Arm Shark - Massive Hand Claw www.trueswords.com/shark-massive-hand-claw-tons-steel-p-4720.htmlThese would probably scare the semprini out of the baddies, putting them on makes you feel like saying "Bring It On", but I don't think they are sturdy enough to trust to a life-or-death situation, plus you would probably get unwanted attention from local law enforcement

As far as the CS Sjambok goes, I own the 42 inch version, and while I am sure it will whack a weed or a snake, and maybe drive off a bad human, I have found it is not that powerful, it can't even bust a half gallon clear plastic juice bottle. Kind of disappointing I am going to get the longer version some time to see if it is better, but for now, I would never want to find myself trying to drive off an attacking pitbull, or a pack of coyotes with one

What do you call a coyote that an Irish Wolfhound has in it's jaws? A squeaky toy! LOL ;D

There are LOTS of coyotes here in Oklahoma, but you almost never see one. At night, you hear them. The few I have seen were hauling ass to get out of sight. The only one I killed was because it ran right out in front of my truck, good riddance There are much scarier things than them out in our woods here, like panthers Yep, the big, black ones like in Africa. Then there are growing numbers of feral hogs. You definitely want guns and plenty of ammo before you go out in the woods here, especially at night

I will second that opinion on the Cold Steel Sjambok. I have both versions and tried to use them while working cattle. It's a decent herding stick if you put some red ribbon on the tip. But if they're excited, my cows just look at you funny when you hit them with it. Gave up on it and got my trusty old cattle whip back out.

ShooterMike, Our family used to have Texas Longhorns. They were actually pretty easy to work with, but we learned early on that if you tried to encourage them to move or move faster with an electric cattle prod, they would reverse direction a herding stick worked well, but a bucket of cattle cookies worked the best of all ;D

I know what you mean. In my herd, there are several that come up to my house fence and beg range cubes from me. They literally eat out of my hand. But when it comes time to push them into the working chute, well... they sometimes need strong encouragement. The Sjambok was an epic fail in this regard.

I recommend this because I owned one and it is very durable sharp light and extremely fast ...... suitable for use like a stick or easily deployed as a sword should more force be needed strong enough to lean on quick enough to chop the head off a pit bull www.armsofvalour.com/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=AOVL&Product_Code=LL015&Category_Code=Oall so I would not recommend using a knife against a k-9 they are too fast even for a sword. but a sword gives you at least 30" of add distance, with a knife you might get a cut or stab in but you will still be a chew toy for the rest. with a sword the one you hit will most likely be wounded bad enough to give the others pause for thought, wild predators like easy meals and generally won't risk serious injury. hurt one or two bad enough they may leave you alone ..... I base my opinion on the fact I owned a wolf (yes a real wild wolf not a half breed.... got it as a baby) and lived in real bad coyote country I've seen them hunt and kill large game bigger than a human .... I've seen three of them take down a cow

I don't know what a thong is in Australia, but the image of what comes to mind when I think of the word, paired with someone trying to kill a venomous snake with one, conjures a fairly comical image.

Flip flops Although I'd hate to hit a snake with a thong, specially something cranky like a taipan or a red belly black... I've also seen some spiders that can put their fangs straight through a thong and one of those thick surfer types too. And yes I'm also talking about flip flops and not some string of underwear But on the original subject I'd be more inclined to stick with something club like with a bit of reach. A knife is all well and good against a single animal (if you know how to use it), but against many, specially a pack, I'd not risk it. Safety in numbers would be key here. Have you thought about a can of pepper spray? Dogs hate anything with capsaicin in it, or even pepper...

An interesting thread so far.
Honestly, I wouldn't recommend anything bladed for defense against dogs or coyotes. I think pepper spray is really the best bet if you can't get a firearm. In a situation where you have to actually use something to fend them off, if they are within sword range, it's too close. Knife range, I don't see how you are going to get out of it without being bitten.
Many moons ago, (okay, a couple hundred moons) I was out in the desert with my girlfriend and I had a self manufactured sword that I made out of a piece of mild steel. We got surrounded by coyotes and they came close enough to see them in the moonlight. Maybe thirty feet. I THINK I could have taken one down with that mild steel if I had to because it had a good edge at the time even if soft, but I gotta say that confidence was not high. And there was a lot more than one to take down.
I have also been surrounded by a herd of russian boar crossbreed hogs while turkey hunting and had nothing to protect myself with other than a pocket knife and some blunt turkey arrows. Pretty high pucker factor when they are close enough to touch and have piglets.
Moral of the story?
Keep calm and keep your wits. Even if you are not properly prepared, nerve and using your head can keep you alive. The best way to win a battle is not to fight it at all.

I'm gettin one of these...Ancalagon, your sister would be well served carrying one of those, along with an air horn or some other backup in case she misses with the knife.
