Until finding SBG I thought that it didn't get any better than the Katana. I still think the Katana is great, but now I have to put all those other swords on my wish list. I kinda took his video as "tongue in cheek". Making fun of all the "hype" (for lack of a better word) though I could be wrong (been there before ) edit: to add this is the only video I've seen of this guy.

well iv watched the video and he make some good points like you cant cut through a gun barrel. and you cant cut through another sword which as far as i know no sword can what you can do is strike it on edge to edge which will eventually result in a stress failure which is probably how that myth was created and as far as armor piercing thats why they invented crossbows .which the pope even tried to ban no sword can pierce well tempered armor without perfect conditions only chain mail and thats hard. so that being said i think all he is doing is pointing out things we all know just dont wanna believe thanks to hollywood

I just remembered - I'd seen an example of the best all around sword ever! Well not in person but well I just wanted to throw it out there: Best all around sword: Light Saber!!!! ;p lol! err... no... they are not sharp, easily slippery, probs battery operated, and really hot, with a good potential to hurt yourself. If there was a guy with a real one of those I would just let him swing and miss, not even bother attacking, just let him/her burn themselves to pieces with it...

The point isn't that Japan had no evolution in it's warfare but that it had very little when compared to any given European country. Disagree. You must then compare what is comparable. That is Japan and Europe from 800 to 1600 ad, and then again from 1868. In Edo there was little development because of the Tokugawa peace, and therefore no need for it. The last big battle of old Japan is the battle of Sekigahara in 1600, and the Satsuma rebellion in 1877 marks the new time. The katana has to be seen as a cultural relic from before Tokugawa in my opinion. After Tokugawa carrying the katana became the privilege of the samurai class and is more a sign of class than a weapon of war. What makes the katana unique is exactly that it's a cultural relic. And that's part of my fascination with it.

They cut through virtually anything with a simple swing and a thrust will send the blade coursing through even blast doors. Only the blades are hot if they touch you but they don't emanate much heat at all... Their heat is only delivered upon touch. Potential to hurt yourself is about as great as with any sword - nothing new there. As for being slippery well all swords get slippery with sweaty hands. Consider that light sabers have no blade mass or presence balance and weight is a moot thing - you don't have to worry about recovery from a missed swing as its instant! If you just stand there you'd be the one burned to pieces. Besides a light saber WILL cut through another sword made of... well anything else! It WILL also cut through a rifle (blaster) barrel and its even been shown as being capable of melting down double layered blast shielded doors! Add to all of that the capability of deflecting direct energy blasts from blasters and you've got a melee weapon that just cannot be matched much less beaten by any other melee weapon in history!

I see that as a huge problem... anyway though, as Chris already said, katanas can cut through them, so my Anduril can simply blow it apart like a little foo...

For those of you who haven't already, you have got to check out the vid that was made in response to the one you guys are talking about. It's in defense of the katana and it's called "Lying about the katana." It should be in the related videos thing.

I like most of that guys videos. I'll admit he hasn't thought deeply enough about some of his sword-related points (just look at his pommel video, good grief) but he's a smart and funny guy and knows what he's talking about more often than not. His katana video is mostly about getting rid of a bunch of the katana hype, which is a good thing, and though some of it isn't spot on, it's probably not a terrible introduction to the weapon. It's a WEAPON, like other weapons, not some mystical lightsaber razor, and should be regarded as other weapons are regarded. I don't think the katana needs to be bashed, however. I've got a bunch of respect for it, created under the circumstances that it was and suited for its intended purpose. It's a sword, as effective as other swords, for it's own given circumstances and use. I love his "Built for the Stone Age" videos, they're pretty fun. Makes me feel like I'm watching the British Discovery Channel.

Haha, ever read youtube video comments?
From the video in question:
dukesofhazzard123 (4 months ago) The katana is a good sword and it is amazing at cutting things like arms or legs even without long handles. It can cut through iron nails and if a hair floats against it in a stream, it will be sliced in two. It can cut through bullets and slash through legs and arms with ease.
thevirum (4 months ago) You are an idiot, they stuck with perfection becasue it is PERFECTION,yes it can slice through gun barrles, yes it can slice through some metals You said none),It is like butter when stabbing chain mail,You said it was perfection (which it is) and before that you say it was made by "The worst swordsmiths in Japan", now how could they make a sword of perfection if thier the worst? As I thought, your facts are wrong and you have no idea what your talking about and do not desurve to hold that Katana.
Poetry.
**Edited to add examples.

I love all swords, Katana to scimitar, Jian to broadsword... I have been hearing Katana Fan Boy hype for YEARS... fans of hollywood and anime have come to belive the katana can cut threw anything and is the end all and be all of weapons. I play RPG's and the Katana hype trickls into that as well. Either the game system plays into the hype and makes the katana the best weapon by far, or it does not, and the players start whinning about how the katana should be SO much better then it is represented in the game.

God, how I sympathize with this. My friends are playing some Mage: The Awakening with me as Storyteller, and they ALL are trying to get Katanas because they're so much better under the rules. Euch. On topic is the fact that I thought his video was good and humorous. He was, as most have pointed out, just telling everyone the basic facts: it was a basic weapon without superpowers, created on an island with poor natural resources and a large amount of introversion. I agree with him saying compare to Europe: Europe has all sorts of good resources, and lots of animosity crunched into one place. It makes sense that they would develop different weapons, whereas Japan was nice n' peaceful from Sekigahara onwards. And a dash of the ol' traditionalism doesn't hurt it either. Just my $0.02 (Canadian)

Hi guys & girls, new to this forum but had alook at the vid-good pionts, bad pionts-just one mans opinion & everybodys entitled to one.I'm surprised that he didn't mention cutting a bowling ball in half which is one of many myths I've heard of ...myself,for its simplicty of design & shere beauty-the katana is very difficult to surpass.Just thought I'd tooss that out there. Thanks
