Tom:
Famous old joke, which probably doesn't need an answer, but since I am the KILTED cossack, I know the answer. Wool shrinks from a combination of heated water and agitation.
I've washed by hand some nice worsted wool kilts, no heat, darn little agitation. Sometimes it seemed like they shrunk, but that was more the owner getting bigger than the kilts getting smaller.
Quick sidebar about modernity: I used to be convinced that there had to be a better material to use for kiltmaking besides wool. I fiddled around with poly-cotton, with denim, with canvas, and with poly-viscose (rayon here stateside). Nope: for looks, hang, comfort, water resistance, ease of sewing: you cannae beat wool. (Sometimes when I talk about kilts I start aping a Scotch accent.)

you are correct, it didn't need an answer but still if you follow logic then scottish teens wouldn't go cow tipping like US kids do but perhaps they go sheep shaking on warm rainy nights. . .
"Arrg me sheeps is smaller!"

It's the first time I've heard an accusation of sheep shaking, to be sure. (Ahem.)

Ok, I have decided I'm going to go with the Valiant Armoury Practical Arming Sword and I can buy my dagger at a later time from DSA.
Anyway, who would be the best vender to buy the Arming sword from?

there's lots of good places to buy if you are only interested in price. for price: Wiwingtiswordsupply.com = 215.99 , www.kultofathena.com = 224.95, www.swordnation.com = 239.99 and www.valiant-armoury.com = 269.99 so if all you want is the basic sword no frills then buy from Wiwingti but it is worth it to talk to Sonny as Valiant-armoury.com because he has the Custom Sword Shoppe which means he can do upgrades and modifications. things like: different color leather, grip risers (I love these) differnt guards and pommels, custom tooling and risers on scabbard, and more. some of this will increase the price a little but if you join his forum (linked from main page) you can get discounts also there is some of this stuff he will do for no extra charge (I think) so even though he is the most expensive on the list he is worth talking to if you want some extras. good luck, can't wait hear your "got my sword" story and maybe you'll put up some cutting video for us.

Jon, you can get wool at any fabric store...just make sure to get 100% wool and not a wool blend.
Ed, I would say getting the grip redone is well worth it at the very least. The chinese grip is my least favorite thing about the VA atrim swords.

yup at $215.99 SBG is as good a price as Wiwingti and you'd be helping out our forum. no matter where you buy from you won't get the chinese grip anymore, you will get Sonny's basic grip which is quite good but if you want more talk to Sonny.

Just thought I'd mention that the 303S is also 215.99 at Swordnation, not 239 as Tom listed. Quit looking at the 304S price.

I've been away for a bit, and I am really glad to see that this trend has established itself (much better swords available in the 200-300$ range) - perhaps waiting a bit was a good thing!

absolutely Ancalgon, and VA is bringing out many more new and wonderful things in the near future. they have a type XVIII, a crecy remake, a Dagesse (wide type XIV) remake, a lionheart remake, a falchion and many many more completely AWESOME swords in the making all destined for the practical cutting series. it seems like it won't be long before you can get a good representation of any Oakeshott type sword from the VA practical series. man I am STOKED over this I can tell you.

and of course my car would die as soon as i know what i wanted :/
This may set me back until around Christmas, but still! I can't wait!
I had actually wanted to try my own hand at making a custom scabbard and belt for it, haha. I don't know how it would turn out, but it would be an interesting attempt.
Any pics out there of current good looking customs?
