Well, i have been given a budget of $1500 for a Christmas sword...
Since someone i love very much is buying it, I dont necessarily want to take up the whole budget if humanly possible...
So I wish I knew exactly what to get... now $1500 buys a great production kat.... ummm yeah... no thanks. Its a gift from my love... so production kat is not what I'm looking for...
$1500 is about 1000 to little to be looking for blades from masters like Barrett... so thats out...
So I'm really wanting a longsword...
i was leaning towards ordering an Albion Earl... www.albion-swords.com/swords/albion/nextgen/earl-photos.htm
yeah...still a production sword ... but damn nice ... but I really need a sale to justify it... Albion has some models on sale for 25% off right now.... sadly not that one... were i to find it for 25% off , I could have Brian make me a scabbard and suspension to make it uniquely mine , despite being production...
Also I have considered a longsword from Lundemo....
Something with a pommel like this
www.odinblades.com/Pages/PiercedPommel%20Warder.html
and maybe some flared or recessed ricasso ... a fantasy thing... with a cross undecided as of yet...
Now that would take my ENTIRE budget... and could not be made until Feb. or March.... thus throwing out the Christmas gift thing.....
Further i have considered having Tinker make me an Irish longsword... a bit like this one... but that would eat up the budget as well ... *sigh*
Also like this from Tink... but it would be over budget... Id want some different pommel too....
I could also buy a Gus Trim sword and have Christian ...well Christian it up for me....
So that is my delima... and yes i know.... its an enviable delimna to have... what they call a "high - class problem"
Maybe my trip to jail yesterday ate up my budget anyway.... but well see...
Anyone know a little known maker of fine longswords they want to share?
i REALLY want du-sith , but I'm $4500 short ...LOL
So anyway.... what would YOU do

Honestly, I'd go with Tinker or Gus/Christian. I respect Albion a lot, but it's just not the same as a custom. You've got the opportunity to own a one-of-a-kind sword, as a gift from a one-of-a-kind woman. I think it's fitting.

I agree with kidcasanova somewhat. Albion swords are good, but they are still production swords. Angus Trim swords are also production swords, but CF turns them into custom swords. I would personally get the CF custom. I'm not saying that you should, but to me it sounds like it would cost a little less than a Tinker custom if you didn't get too fancy with the customization. Odinblades would also be one of my possible choices, but most likely I would get a Fableblades sword. Now that I think about it, I understand how getting an expensive custom sword can be just as hard as picking a production sword.

That's a nice problem to have If I didn't know me, I'd get a Tinker bare blade and then customize it. Not the Hanwei/Tinker, an actual Tinker. I Like some of the Albions that are on sale, but if you're going to spend that much on a sword, might as well get a custom one just for you.

You know... surprisingly, I'm getting almost opposite advice here than I got on SFI and Myarmoury... well i didnt go into as many details there but.... www.swordforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98059www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=17884 BB... yeah that may be nice...but Tink makes it plain on his site he does not sell unmounted blades... too bad noone is selling nice Conan swords... *cough* One day I'd like a fable... but i really want to watch Brenno a BIT LONGER to get a sense of his style, so I'll know just what to get when the time comes... Been watching John and Tinker for 5 years now... pretty much got the feel for designing something i like that [plays to their strengths... still working on Brenno... thought the last few blades hes made are REALLY starting to speak to me.... Lundemo is my real pick now... but IDK .... i hate to spend the whole $1500 ... and IDK what my girl will think about a xmas present in march... I'll have to run it past her and see i guess....

Ask for the cash. Then take her on a vacation. Swords will be available as long as you and I are alive.

A nice thought... though with two kids , a trip together isnt as easy as all that... we are kinda planning a trip to Maine now... but no ...asking for cash would be crass, when shes trying to gift me with something I'll love , from her heart....

Hm, I didn't know Tinker didn't sell bare blades? It would probably still be a cheaper way to get a custom to buy a longsword from him with basic fittings, have custom fittings made, and then sell the old parts. He he Meh, You don't want one of those anyway if your looking for a long sword, they're too heavy. I prefer long words myself as that's what I train in. That's a good idea too.

Maybe Lundemo can fit you in. You will be passing his doormat on the way to Maine. I was raised in NB, which borders Maine. Nice country. Yes... it really is... I usually do the whole tourist thing... fly into Portland... rent a car ... drive to Freeport , hit the outlets and LLBean... and Ben and Jerry's LOL... then next day Kittery and the numerous outlets there... then come back from Kittery along the coast towns,,, York... Kennebunk... Kennebunkport... Cape Porpoise... all a bit cliche , but fun ... and great xmas shopping.

That is very cool Marc. When I lived in NB I did that EXACT tour. It was only an 8 hour drive for me. Old Town canoes were all the rage where I lived, so we went to see. Deja vous. WOW. Yes... it is an awesome trip... i used to do it every October for Xmas shopping, back when money was less of an concern... Yes, Johns craftsmanship is really first rate... i am obsessed with owning an Odin as well. Once upon a time my friend now im not smuggling... Im struggling... LOL

I would have the Stagmers forge a blade and then have Brother Banzai do the fittings.

I hope when you see the sword I'm going to release sometime today or tomorrow it will redefine one's concept of what I do, or more likely throw a spanner right in one's efforts to conceptualise my work

Well Marc to respond to your origional post.....if it were me...I'd go for the Earl....with antiqued furniture.....possibly with half wire wrap. That's the only longsword I've had my eye on for the last year and a half. But good luck and congratulations on what ever sword/s you end up with for Christmas.... perhaps I can convince Santa to leave charcoal instead of regular coal in my stocking to help forge my own sword, because unless I buy it myself or make it I won't be getting one....

I don't know if that fits your bill, but Arno from the Traumschmiede makes very beautiful swords. He does only customs and at the momet he's too busy to take new orders but he might be the one to ask. For 1200$ you could get a very nice longsword... but you could get one from Tinker or ATrim aswell.
