Hey all,
Hey all, I've been thinking that my next sword purchase might be the Gen2 12th Century sword, or one of the 2 variants (Crusader or Templar). I love the big, no-nonsense war-swords from the 12th Century, and I hear good things about this model. I also noticed that KOA and Swords of Honor have that one on sale for about $200, so now might be the time to jump on it. Here's my question: I know that awhile back, Gen2 had some isolated QC issues; blades that were on the soft side, or that would take a set, mostly their Black Prince, Lucerne and Dordogne swords. Has anyone encountered any similar issues with the 12th Century sword? I'm wondering if that might not be the reason KOA and SOH has them for cheap. Or, I could just be paranoid. Lay some knowledge on me! Peace.

I do not recall hearing of any such issues on that particular sword or any of its variants. I think the issue was pretty well isolated to the other swords you mentioned, and was determined to be a case of over-grinding on the thinner blades they had. If memory serves, the issue was corrected long ago. Granted, I've not heard much of Gen2 in a while...sort of wondering what's become of them these days. Clyde Hollis used to post here, but he got angry with us and left.

Gen2 is supposedly working on some new models. I'd like to see how they turn out.

Considering the progress they were making when Clyde left us, these new models could be very interesting. I wonder why I hadn't hear of them till now? Shows how far out of the Euro scene I am these days...

Indeed... Jason was talking about the new swords from Gen 2 not too long ago... I hope to see something of them soon. As for the 12th Century... I had one and it was a big, solid thing... no signs of temper issues. RicWilly has one he likes quite a bit... and it makes the most amazing ringing sound when it cuts.

I saw that vid! That's what really grabbed me about that piece, it sings like an operatic tenor. He says that his sword was an older incarnation of the model, does anyone know if some of the newer versions behave like that?

Unfortunately for Gen 2 there is now so much competition in the market that their swords are no longer stacking up. Much as I like some of Gen 2's products there are much better products out there. I hope that Clyde manages to become a competitor again because even though there is bad blood between him and the SBG he is a good guy.

I must have missed the fight because I don't remember Clyde fighting with us. I do remember seeing him post once in a while. was it all related to that one batch of softies and the inevitable hate and discontent to arise from it, or something else?
as for the Gen2 swords I've heard a lot of good things about them but I have not seen much of his swords so I cannot say if they stack up or not. if they do stack up then they are some darned fine swords because we got some good stuff available now days. even if they don't quite meet the top standards they are reasonably priced and have a good reputation. I understand they are one of the few sword companies to deliver swords ready to cut out of the box no sharpening needed. that alone makes me say give them a chance if they have anything that tickles your fancy.

Our friend, Luka, bent his 12th century on a branch. It is mentioned in this thread. That was some time ago.

This sword really REALLY should have a longer handle. I think had it had a longer handle, it would be a very good sword...as it stands, I find it to be a very clumsy and heavy one hander that is just hard to deal with. As for the tempering issue, that was for the type XV blades...and even then it wasn´t a big deal except in a very few cases where they pretty much completely annealed the tips in the final grinding.

I'm sure it was a temper issue but it might not showed if I didn't abuse the sword and cut only bottles and similar targets. But still it probably would bend on a bad cut. If your sword showed up to be a problematic one I doubt you would have much problems to get a refund or another sword from KOA. They are very nice guys.

There are a lot of questions and guesses about Gen 2 on this thread so I will try to touch on the major ones. Gen 2 is still going strong, just not in the lime light in SBG. It is still AoV's number one selling brand of sword. The tempering issue was resolved and we have not had any complaints from the many G2 swords we have been selling. The 12th Century was designed to be used from horseback. It is a single hand sword with a longer flat blade designed for cutting. When holding it imagine yourself swinging down on an enemy as you ride by. When on foot there is still enough room on the handle to squeeze the second hand on the hilt. The two new G2 prototypes will be here in about 4 weeks and will be tested and reviewed. Once approved about 4 months before the first batch arrives. We will be taking pre-orders. AoV will match any advertised G2 price and of course if you do have any issues we will take care of it. We have a very good track record here on SBG. And almost forgot, last year AoV did a structural test video on the Gen 2 Third Crusade sword you can see it here as well as Shooter Mikes cutting video of the Henry V. www.armsofvalour.com/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=AOVL&Category_Code=ICIBIt held up fantastically. Any more questions please feel free to ask. Jason

As for Gen2 swords, I've only handled one in passing, the Black Prince- solid sword, fittings were a bit on the clunky side, but it was sturdy from what little I could tell. Bill (Tsafa) has a Lucerne- he had a BP as well, think he liked the Lucerne better though. The blade on the Lucerne has more of a distal taper, bringing the POB closer to the guard.

Not much to tell, there was a bad batch of swords and people were rather put out about, tempers got a little heated, words were exchanged and Clyde ended up leaving us.

Even as a horseback sword, it´s pretty gnarly to handle in one hand I think. The A&A version has almost the same base stats but feels more manageable in one hand and easier to fit two hand onto. The gen 2 version with the handle stretched out another inch or two with a smaller pommel I think would behave more like the A&A sword I think...even if it doesn´t look as close...and that would have made a better sword from a handling aspect and from a we are not copying A&A aspect. Can´t wait to see the new gen 2 swords though .

Sheesh...that can happen to anyone though. Ah well, so long as it was concluded to everyone's satisfaction.
Its funny, but in looking back on my own personal journey to/for the sword, it is almost amazing to see the transition for me personally. What I started ogling early on is nothing like what I'm aching for now...
I know its natural, progression, but does anyone else have a similar insight? Most of what I wanted initially wouldn't even qualify as a decent wallhanger, let alone usable. To me, that is hilarious! Just goes to show you...

Ok, so it sounds like no one has really had a problem with the 12th Century swords temper, that was my main concern. I don't mind a heavy sword. That grip might be a little short, but the pommel looks about the right size for me to wrap my big paws around it if I have to. I was wondering if there were still some pieces from the bad batch floating around with the vendors, I guess only they can answer that question!

More than likely, some of those bad pieces might be floating around on eBay but by and large the vendors would've purged their inventory of the bad pieces, if they're honorable. We all know that isn't always the case, but it is the hope.

AoV only has the most recent batch available, so none of the old temper issue swords here.
Yes, I cannot wait for the new swords to arrive. As to the weight, it would not be my first choice for sword and shield combat on foot, but I can see it working well giving lots of power when used from horseback and still recover fast enough for multiple blows/blocks.

My experience mirrors your's in this aspect, Paladin. The knowledge I get on this forum has a lot to do with that and of course some of these swords didn't exist when I started. When I first started looking at swords the old line of Valiant Armoury sword were what caught my eye, that's when I bought my old viking. Over time and gaining info I realized these models left something to be desired and I moved on to other brands. Now the new VA line are some of my favorites. Full circle, hey?
