Good arguments, Dominic. Gotta play to your strengths and do what you can to turn your enemies' strength into their weaknesses.

Yup yup! Thanks, Taran. I spent some time sitting here after I read the thread. I was like... Uuuuuh... Brain hurt. LOL
On the armor vs arrows argument though... If we were to regress like in the scenario, how would our supplies of metal be? Because if we've only a small amount, most likely it'll go mostly towards weapons and tools. At most we'll only have a breastplate or shield, right? Just what I was thinkin' that's all.
I do need some solution to my vision problem though. Been looking at Lasik for awhile. But all I really see is it being expensive, somewhat risky, and that good results aren't guaranteed (then again, what is?). I think that I'll have to wait for when it's become an older and somewhat better perfected procedure. It's my eyes I'm talkin' about! They're pretty dang important, hahahah!

If tech Were to regress, you have a point about metal going to other thing than armour. Especially since leather is so much easier to work with and so many people know how to harden it. And piercing weapons PWN leather armour.
You should really go get a consult on LASIK or, really, any/all other laser eye surgery options. Most clinics will do the consult for free. As far as expensive, well, yeah, somewhat. But maybe your insurance will cover part of it. Should ask. But you're still looking at $5k or Less, even if your insurance won't cover it. That's like a down payment for a new car.

Hmmm...even though I don't own a pair or even know how to use them, I would have to put my vote in for a pair of thick, pointy Sai. There's an obvious advantage over leather, and chainmail armor considering they are piercing weapons. There's also the advantage of the parrying capabilities against many other weapons. Sai are also very light, so stamina while swinging or stabbing shouldn't be too much of a problem compared to heavier weapons. If encountered with plate armor, tangling the weapon in the prongs of the sai and moving in close for the kill would be the way to go. Aim for something like the throat or exposed face. The only thing I see that would pose a real threat would be when fighting a ranged weapon or a shielded opponent. That's my two cents.

Depends.
As others have stated, in case of Zombie apocalypse, something long and cutty but not cumbersome. A katana/tachi/gunto would be great.
In terms of actually being somewhere else, the Mainz Gladius or the late Spatha. Just because, if suddenly in the court of Arthur, they'd be easy to market lol.

If a shield is offered with the 1h sword, I'd take it. A shield would be perfect for any "mobs with rocks and pipes" that you'd come across. But given the information presented with the original post I am to assume that we ONLY get the weapon stated above. I'd go with a 1.5 handed sword in a heartbeat. Plenty of options for quick attacks or choking up on the thing for the power attacks. And we all know swords don't last forever, so if and when it broke, I'd have the makings for a dagger/short sword and possibly an axe type of weapon (all depending on where it broke) So, all you people that chose the bow, I'm afraid you are "SOL". Unless you can make your own arrows... but if you talk real nice to me I might let you use my sword to carve up some wood The problem I'd have with a polearm is that I think it would be a bit cumbersome to carry around, and if you get one of tho's crazy fast people with the daggers, they'd be inside your zone in a second. But it would all come down to training and luck I suppose. I just think I'd be luckier with a longsword over anything else.

I didn't see the options for "running shoes" or "machine gun" so I went with a pole arm. I want something mean and pointy to keep hostiles at a distance with. The hard truth is I don't (not yet at least) know enough about a sword to trust my life to one, and I've gotten too fat and out of shape to rely on my years of martial arts so even though I don't know what I'm doing with it I figure I stand the best chance with a pole arm.

OK, my choices are simply based with what I know how to use and whether or not I need to hunt for food. If hunting is required the bow, knife, and possibly a spear. If I am not having to hunt than a one handed sword, my personal preference - Chinese Saber either Niu Wei Dao (Ox Tail) or Willow Leaf Dao, and my cane. Never underestimate the speed and versatility of a short staff.
That being said, my primary weapons would be my mind, and any ability to actually avoid fighting I could maintain.

Poleaxe; devastatingly deadly in any situation. As a side armament I'd carry a Type XIV short sword and some kind of small round shield or buckler. I can't use a bow too well so for food I'd just raid grocery stores.
