This is definately a rehash that pops up every now and then in the forums, but it's always fun to answer them: If you had to fight today with an antiquated weapon, what would you consider fighting with and why? The weapon can be of modern manufacture, but it has to be from one of the above categories. I'll begin by saying that I would choose a polearm in the form of an A&A Knightly Pole Axe. I'd choose this weapon because though I am skilled in longsword, the pole arm is by far the easiest weapon to master and the most difficult to defend against. I can honestly say that I would feel comfortable fighting against even highly skilled swordsmen with this particular pole arm. Using it is a blast and it's very easy to see why it became the preferred weapon of the military in antiquity. Your preferences and thoughts? ;D

I'll start with what isn't listed first hope ya don't mind. In truth i'd rather use straight up martial arts. But against most any weapon of those types. That would be a hard fought victory. In picking a weapon i'd prefer Katana. Just to keep it simple reasoning is i've been using one for 10 yrs.
Now out of those listed would have to be the spear, with bow a close second. Reasoning is easy enough. The spear combines a stabbing and sometimes slashing weapon. With a fair bit or range between me and my opponent. Now my ability to use one is dwarfed by both my martial and sword training.
However its a weapon that allows me to attack, defend and faint. These are the 3 things i look for in any style or weapon. To be able to find all in one is a huge bonus to me. Not to mention when all is said and done. Well i just like the spear!

I'll take a spear anytime. I learn a little on using the staff and that training might be helpful in using a spear. I've never handle a polearm, but the extra blade presence at the front and little extra weight might quite a challange. Nevertheless I'll pick a polearm or staff if a spear is not available.
For close combat...that would be difficult because its effectiveness depends on the armor my opponent is wearing. Nevertheless a fast sword would be my preference.

Damnit odin, you took my vote choice and type choice .........
Yeah if I had to have just one (assuming this is for war and defence and doesnt have to multitask like a spear for hunting and fighting or bow etc) then I would have a pole axe and if I had to have one version it would be A&A Knightly Pole Axe.
Then again another good workmans weapon that came to big use was the goedendag, or a varient on it which was essentially a double handed flanged mace with a forehand rondel guard and a 4 to 5 inch spike on top. Did havoc on plate armoured cavalry .....

I'm honestly unsure which one I would pick. The only listed weapon I have used is a sword. I have a one handed and two handed sword. I know that I would not want a two handed sword. I would rather have a spear. My first choice would be a single handed weapon. Either a sword or a mace. I have used a sword, and I know that a mace is simple and user-friendly. One of these in combination with a shield will be decent. Of course, I'm sure that I would die quickly in a real fight.

I'd go with the bow with the longsword as a close second. Why? Because I know how to use them ;D

Well if I was afforded ten years of training I'd pick the bow. Just can't get better than that in kill and safety ratio. No training I'd pick 2-handed sword to use my height/weight/reach. One on one I'd be happy with either of those (With a nice distance between us for the bow of course). In a battle I'd like both, and the training..
Also the bow is a damn good hunting weapon to keep you fed.

FYI - The katana would be considered to fit into the 1.5 and 2 handed sword category, so don't let this effect your voting. Your preference was taken into consideration, even if I did focus on European arms. I did however leave out categories for the Shaolin twin ring spinning dart looking thingys that pop eyeballs out and the ninja black throwing eggs of death. For those that prefer these weapons; sorry, it's my bad... ;D

Bow...because I´m quite good with one and that much range advantage is hard to beat...followed by a longsword and shield (yeah I know I do silly things too sometime ).

My favorite ancient weapon of choice is the most ancient of all our weapons... The Human Mind ;D
But if I had to choose one from the list above it would have to be a Bow. Because if they are coming for ya anyway, you might as well get them at a distance. I guess that would also be using the Mind ;D

voted for longsword...just most comfortable with one. Actually ancient weapon.......a rock would be first choice......easy to use, can be found almost anywhere, various size and shape's for different applications.....and make's a really neat sound ("whaacck!!!) when it hit;s the target...whatever "it" may be...... cheers, Bill

Depends on context, but if I had to give a general answer I'd probably choose a spear or pole-arm, probably a bec-de-corbin.

If I can't have the black eggs of death, then I'll go with the spear...if I could get two, I'd go for a bow also...the spear seems practical enough fo me: reach, thrusting weapon (useful even against maille or joints in plate, eyeslits in helms, etc.), versatility (fighting and could be used for hunting, just in case)...or maybe I chose it because I'm just in a "spearing" mood lately...gotta get me a good spear...

Have not used one in ages... but I also would go with a bow. A Good recurved one such as the huns used. Good times.

For my primary weapon I'd choose a long-bladed spear with langets. The kind that has a nice blade shape for cutting over thrusting. Kind of like a Viking Hewing spear, found here: kultofathena.com/product~item~600444.htm, just add some langets like the ones on Cold Steel's Boar Spear, except slightly longer. www.coldsteel.com/boarspear.htmlThe shaft would be about 5' long. I chose a spear just becuase a staff is my best weapon, and a spear handles very similarly if weighted at the back end with a counter-weight. Add that to what the others have mentioned, and I'm good. I'd also have a small heater shield on my back for when/if the spear's shaft cuts broken. Then I could use the remaining short spear one-handed and wield the shield in my off-hand. My secondary weapon would, of course, be a bow. I'm really quite a horrible marksman, but with a bit of training I'm sure that that could be remedied. ;D Good question and thread, Odingaard! +1 when I recharge... -Slayer
